Concerned With My Son and Football

My son is currently an 8th grader who has played football since 4th grade (B Division is 4-6 grade, A is 7-8). He has started every year, and loves the game so much. All he looks forward to is this game in the fall. However, I’m concerned with him and his size in High School.
He’s 5’5” and weighs around 130. He’s in no way lanky, with a stockier build, his thighs are pretty big. He used to be very chubby around 3 years ago, but has slowly gotten taller without gaining much weight, making his height:weight ratio more balanced. He used to be an endomorph, but is now transitioning into more of a mesomorph.
He’s played Defensive end for 4 years (1 at Nose Guard), and has split between Offensive Guard and Fullback. He was fast until gained his weight 4-5 years ago and got pretty chunky. Now he’s getting his speed back due to weight loss, and seems to be quicker. He’s trading speed for size, which at the High School level I don’t really like. (As a parent). On the line he wasn’t super powerful or quick, he was just good. Nothing special, he just did stuff right, at the Junior high Level this worked, but does he need to have more athletic ability at the next level? Just because he plays smart and exucutes techiniques, does this really make up for a lack of size on his part? He has a knack for hitting hard, it’s just something he’s always been able to do. Could that translate to him at safety? D-Line to DB seems super drastic in my mind.
I’m not so much concerned for his safety (while it bothers me, it isn’t enough for me to not let him play), but more-so his playing time. It’d crush my heart to see him ride the bench after seeing how much he enjoys the sport. I hope he plays on JV, but while I think he’ll play, I don’t think he’ll play much.
So I have a few questions... I understand you guys aren’t the coach, and haven’t even seen him play, but any answer would be appreciated better than no answer.
What postion(s) should he expect to play/train for?
Do you think I should be concerned for his safety at his size?
Will he play at all as a Freshman?
Are my worries warranted based off of his recent development?
Any other comments about him or dietary advice (he’s still a teenager, but I want to help him succeed by giving him a good diet).
Any help appreciated.
