But they have not voted Democrat maybe ever. If you look at the election map after election map it's been the cities and the suburbs that carried Obama and any other Democrat not the rural areas.

The women at my gym are mostly cunts, and I do not hold them up as an example for anybody
They may not be an example for anyone to follow but I'll bet they are good examples of Trump voters. Wealthy, and probably decently educated to boot. So are their husbands.

Rural people are raised to be self sufficient. It is a necessity to be self sufficient, independent and resourceful. If you aren't those things, you don't make it. Even if you are, you may not make it but without: you don't. That is what is highly valued: being hard working, self sufficient, resourceful, independent. People who aren't those things: who can't even change their own oil or tires or fix a leaky faucet are looked down upon as being incompetent and useless to themselves. But don't make the mistake of thinking they are not extremely intelligent and often well educated.

I don't think the vast majority of immigrants today are white people although I would say that almost everyone on this board had an immigrant for an ancestor.

None of my health care providers are Caucasian except for my prosthodontist and he is soon to be my ex dentist because he is such a right wing asshole. Primary care physician and internist is an Indian woman and my glaucoma specialist is Chinese. My regular eye doctor is Indian my best oral surgeon is Middle Eastern. My GI doctor is an Israeli Jew. These people are in the positions they're in because they were smarter or worked harder than Caucasian or black students. When I was teaching at the University of Illinois and Northwestern The Immigrant students or the children of immigrants worked much harder than the people who were here for Generations whether they were black or white. There were no generations of Indians and Chinese usually so almost all of the ethnic students were immigrants or their parents were.
You have the lower class immigrants you are not educated who do so much but work and then the educated ones who are the professionals.

No matter what you say about the real people just look at the elections time after time they vote Republican. And they are voting for people that take away their jobs and would screw them in a minute as far as any kind of government assistance. If they have any brains at all why would they do that except for the fact that they would rather screw themselves then let somebody else get help in particular a person who is any color at all. In addition it is very hard to be gay in a small town or rural area. People who are in the closet or they are not accepted in the community. I know a lot of them work hard but I can't stand that culture. They're heavy into Christianity but not very Jesus like.

I am sure the women and my gym voted for Trump but many of them didn't bother to vote at all because they're too self-absorbed. I have never seen in 10 years a trump bumper sticker on a Mercedes or a Porsche or Alexis or any other luxury car. But I see them on half the beat-up pickup that I see. And as many people that winter here with money that voted for Trump there are more that have a trailer for thewinter that voted for Trump.

Rising Lee there were no political signs in any of the Yards and not only my neighborhood but the entire time that I should see other than an occasional Sheriff Joe sign.

That should have been surprisingly there were no political signs in the yard either in my neighborhood you're in the area that I drive through which are pretty much the entire town because I'm going to the cat shelter and doing other business in town. Like I said there were a few Sheriff Joe signs butt obviously that wasn't the majority since he lost his ass thank God for small favors

Krystal, where I live, it is extremely rare for people in big beautiful homes to have yard signs and I never see them on the bumpers of Mercedes, BMWs, etc. That would be tacky.

I absolutely agree that the stereotypical immigrant is (in people's minds) a brown skinned Muslim or a bad hombre looking to rape a lot of women and children--plus his wife who just wants to have as many anchor babies as she can while she's cleaning some nice white woman's house.

Never mind that most people don't even realize that Allah is the same god as in the Old and New Testaments.

Not all the homes are that expensive here. I live on the country club side of the main Boulevard but not in the club if prices here go for a million minimum 2 over the sky however the other side of town has many homes in the half a million range and then there are neighborhoods where you can pick up a small home on a small lot for under 200,000. You can't get anything in Scottsdale accept a trailer for under 200. We are half an hour north of an area called Mesa Arizona which is actually a city of 400,000 and the homes there are quite a bit less expensive but with a population that hi there is a wide range. I take my classes at the Mesa Arts Center and if you look at that on the Internet is a wonderful place and there are some pretty good performances. Mesa also has a huge population of Mormons hands the restaurant stand to be not so fancy and there's not a lot of liquor served.

I was driving around one of the less expensive neighborhoods because someone had posted a lost cat and we do that sometime or look for someone's lost dog as well and I was surprised that I did not see any Trump signs but like I said I did see some Sheriff Joe signs which I was very tempted to deface.

Gilmore Girls running commentary After the experience of bingeing S1-7, and having generalized dissatisfaction I couldn't pin down, I decided to take notes and type up commentary after each of the Four Seasons. I was "busy" doing colon prep, so it was a good distraction. :P

All seasons 1-7

Okay now I've lost a long post summarizing my S1-7 rewatch recap. GRRRRRRRRRRR Which pisses me off as I had the Four Seasons revival in a saved, edited Word doc of running commentary after watching each Season so why the HELL didn't I do the same with the recap?

I'll save and add>>>

The brief version:

I liked S5 the best, and not just because I like Logan, and not just because Luke and Lor have the strongest relationship in that season.

It seems like ASP went off the rails in S6, and either consciously or unconsciously sabotaged the show once she knew she wouldn’t be part of S7. The intro of April was awful, and even handled well would have been crap, and it wasn’t handled well.

I was surprised that I didn’t hate S7 as much as I thought I would, and in fact, liked some parts of it better than I expected, and think some parts turned out better than were ASP had things heading by the end of S6.

Winter

I like that Luke and Lor are already long term. That they have been together since the finale. Not sure I like that they’re “stuck” in a limbo, rather than content in a non-traditional relationship. I guess that will form plot fodder. I kinda wish they had a couple of kids and were all settled…then discovered their marriage wasn’t valid. LoL

I like Logan a lot, and do not see the character as a spoiled rich brat, like so many others do. Yes he comes from privilege and sometimes reverts to the stereotypical - but I see him as much more of a Kennedy type that a Paris Hilton type. So I love that he and Rory have a long term FWB; and imo the only reason they STILL aren't married and he's engaged to someone else is that Rory keeps saying No, for no good reason except that she isn't actually up to his weight and knows it. Not sure if there's even a bit of intent by ASP for that interpretation, but that's okay, imo writers often don't know the power of their own creations to find a voice contrary to the writer's intent.

Forgettable Paul = stupid gimmick. And later, a very nasty commentary on Rory’s hollowness and shallowness. If intentional by ASP, rather than as a flat joke, it will be interesting. Otherwise, another example of poor plotting and follow thru by ASP.

Unless backstory happens, I am assuming Rory keeps saying no to marriage to Logan, even though he is engaged. So my increasing dislike of Rory seems to be validated as this “Year” picks up where S7 left off.

And in general: it kinda sucks that we’re dropped into the middle of Rory’s troubles, and given almost no “catchup” highlights or backstory chatter. With Luke and Lor it works, because one can assume events in Stars Hollow are sorta timeless. But Rory is THIRTY TWO, about the same age as Lorelai when we met her in S1. Has she really been bebopping around freelancing all this time? That seems un-Rory-like, even though some people find it believable IRL.

Overall, “Winter” confirmed for me that Mitchum Huntzberger was right and Rory did NOT have what it takes to be a journalist. Being a good writer =/= being a journalist, even though some skills overlap.

It’s actually amazing that I love the characters so much despite the bad plot driven tripe. Like, lorelai couldn’t come p with some bland story about her dad at the funeral. That’s just pathetic.

Lane looks amazing.

Too much Kirk.

The revolving Inn Chefs, with celeb cameos – gag. And the backstory for Sookie’s absence is just crap. Bleah.

The tap dancing stress relief – dumb. In fact, a lot of the ASP conceits and jokes are falling flat for me.

Paris as a fertility expert worked for me okay. How it dovetailed with Luke and Lor, not so much.

1st Buffy reference, by Paris – negative, but then, it’s Paris, so that’s her as the unreliable narrator? (“Don't stand there shaking, just go, apologize to your parents, tell them you'll pay them back for the two semesters you spent studying Buffy the Vampire Slayer's affect on the feminist agenda.")

Michel’s material worked for me. I am assuming his role is larger with Sookie being MIA.

LOVED Alex Kingston… though she will always be River Song to me.

Overall, the Gilmore Girls seemed really self centered and immature. Which was a thing I noticed plowing thru the GG marathon. The writing just wasn’t strong enough to balance the needed conflicts with the characters’ belovedness. (to coin a word?)

In general, I feel like any three GG fanfic writers could have plotted better stories. The characters and dialog are ASP’s gift, the plot turns, not so much.

Spring

Logan engaged. But, imo, ready to commit to Rory the minute she says yes.

Kirk’s film. Blah.

Mr. Kim. Well that upsets a bunch of fanwanking but makes some fans happy. I’m sorry we didn’t get more with Lane. I hope in Summer/Fall?

The gay pride parade seemed “off” and somehow dated. Can’t put my finger on why it was a sour note.

The return to Chilton also felt really off. I would think Paris has learned to control her crazy spells better. In fact, I think a major flaw is that, on the one hand, ASP has allowed ten years to pass (no choice, really…right?) but on the other hand, wants to pick up with her own S7. Not working in spots. ETA: And I know they are treading a fine line with Rory’s life plans, but the implication that a teaching career isn’t “right” for her sorta pisses me off, and not just because I’m a teacher.

Loved the peek into Paris’ home life, and her kids do seem to love her despite her comments. I get why she and Doyle are split, but it would be cooler if she had a more stable, better home life and relationship that Rory. And cool that Danny Strong’s real life overlaps Doyle’s. lol

I know everyone was so excited about the therapy plot, but it didn’t work for me, mostly because it went nowhere. I guess maybe it will resonate later? We shall see.

I did feel bad for Rory dealing with her website job experience. And while it sort of highlighted just how empty her last ten years must have been, it also highlights how bad ASP plotted this. WTF? (See teacher plot griping)

Hate the Luke and Lor are still hiding stuff from each other (I won’t call it actual lying, but still) And over what, a franchise and a therapy appointment? Blah.

The Secret Bar was AWESOME…and so was Michel.

The Wookie sex seemed weird, not because it was weird per se, but because it seemed like a scene we should have SEEN not been told about. (Show don’t tell – the writer’s maxim.)

Summer

The pool scenes were cringe-inducing. From the fat shaming to the pool boys, just sorta icky and creepy.

I guess they wanted Emily to have a bit of “stars hollow wacky character” interaction – but I am just not buying that she would tolerate such a weird household full of odd, non-english speaking people. They needed to make some kind of connection, some real, earned reason Emily adapts and accepts that situation.

The Stars Hollow Musical – sucked in a not-funny way. Fifteen minutes, almost, of crap, wasting Sutton Foster, except for that extra number added in that gave Lorelai her epiphany.

And she needs to go hike? Just dumb, not interesting to me. Maybe if I knew anything about the book/movie they are referencing?

I hope Lorelai eventually verbalizes WHY she is so opposed to the book. And if she won’t give outright carte blanche to the daughter she supposedly loves to the moon and back, can’t she negotiate with her own daughter to hold some level of veto over possible versions of events, and wouldn’t Rory be more than happy to agree? Such bad crappy plotting. If this had been tied in with the counseling/trust/sharing issues with Emily, then maybe the plot would have meat. As it stands, it’s merely dues ex machine fake conflict creation.

So Rory is gonna edit the SH gazette. GIAFB. Really? Dumb. And the “humorous” wacky newspaper staff was just not at all funny.

Jess gets to be Rory’s conscience again, her touchstone. Bleah. Instead of a one night wookie, couldn’t the show explore something deeper with Jess? Gah…

I just do not see Emily dating this soon after Richard’s death. Nope, not in character at all.

I was not an April fan, but I like what they did with her here.

In general, I agree with the posters who think this was the worst of the four movies, and the one that clearly shows that ASP and DP did not work at all from the developments in S7. Some of which were good developments in character. Which makes the characters “10 years later” seem even more shallow and immature and silly than usual.

The lack of any meaningful Lane centered story is a crime.

What the FUCK ever happened to Rory’s trust fund? Which, based on the fact that Emily and Richard built a freakin’ science building at Yale as a “side line” means she should have millions, plus whatever came to her from grandma Lorelai, who was ready to give her a cool quarter mil as a kid, and so surely left her more after death. Again, bad bad plotting. Rory as a decadent, dilettante writer, living the high society life like Finn – that should have been the drama. With Logan as the responsible, mature dopplegang. Too internal and too sophisticated for ASP to handle I suppose.

Or, maybe she becomes political after a year on Obama’s bus, and leaves writing, and regrets it. IOW, there were a ton of good plot ideas and we got bupkis.

Until I read recaps, I didn’t realize that Berta the maid was played by the actress who is Gypsy.

Fall

I loved the return of the Life and Death Brigade, loved everything about that extended arc with Colin and Finn and Logan coming to SH to cheer Rory up. Okay, yeah, kinda dumb for thirtysomethings, but somehow very charming, which was not been easy to find in this revival in any season.

Given what we know about Melissa M’s return, I’m glad her cameo was a good as it was.

Nice scene with Dean. Short, but sensible. He will always be Dean Winchester’s brother Sam for me, but he looked good and the scene was integrally well done.

Emily in Nantucket with the immigrant family. Smh I suppose it’s to humanize her, but it feels really off – even as a reaction to Richard’s death. But overall, I LOVED Emily’s scenes throughout the seasons but especially here in Fall. Her DAR rant, her docent scene at the whaling museum. <3

I wish the plans with Dragonfly Two had been a larger plot development. I wanted to “see” it.

Since this is label Season 1 by Netflix, when will we get news of s2?

HATED the pacific hiking crap. Bah. A whole lotta wasted buildup for that phone call to Emily. Which wasn’t emotionally cathartic for me because A) should have been said at the funeral, with a better plotted segue, and B) the whole “Lorelai is on a physical epiphany trek” was just too much of an anvil dropping. (The mechanics of the writing were too obvious.)

I liked the “make-up” scene with Luke and Lor, and Luke’s speech was well done. SP overall was great in the seasons. I really liked how the wedding played out.

The final four words…shouldn’t have been a dialog exchange.

Better: (imho)

Mom.

What?

I’m pregnant.

(long looong pause)

It will be alright.

Is there anyone seriously thinking this ISN’T Logan’s baby? Would ASP make it the Wookie baby? Or, did she sleep with Jess off camera? Or she’s a surrogate for Michel? (well, that actually fits the plotting, but not the heart of the story. But would be very clueless-Asp writing, I guess)

I hate hate HATE the common consensus that Logan is the new Chris. That’s not Logan at all, based on what we’ve seen over and over from Chris and Logan. Then again, ASP hasn’t seen S7. Grrr I read something suggesting that instead, Logan is Lorelai – rebelling against family, snarking on tradition and wealth (tho Logan uses it, rather than eschews it), and are the dominant in the pairing (Lor over Chris/Logan over Rory)

Also, I think I hate Netflix for dumping all four movies at once. I would have loved to watch one a month, and take time to read and post, but was too afraid of being spoiled. Grrrr….

Heh. You lost a longer piece, too...

I don't get you liking Logan (in Season 5, anyway).

Luke/Lor 'settled', good, but not married... yeah, kind of a stretch. Plot. Would have worked been better 'four or five years later', not ten. (Also much of Rory's stasis, of course)

Paul - Yeah, I laughed at the first couple scenes, but... that went too far.

I got that Rory had some career ups and downs over the years... it didn't bother me that we didn't get a more thorough catch-up, but I agree with the consensus that she makes a lot of dumb moves over this year (but I did like her taking over the town paper, just after swearing she wasn't 'back')...

Agree, Sookie absence explanation is crap.

Yeah, Paris freaking out in the bathroom felt off, and why was Tristan even (sorta) there? So she could freak out, but... eh. But I love her, and Weil.

Secret Bar was awesome.

Wookie sex... yeah, at least a little more onscreen build-up there would have helped it. Bit too random as presented.

Emily and Berta and family was weird, but I bought it well enough... 'change'. Doing things differently. Loneliness and grief and weird.

I have to figure there'd have been more Jess if Ventimiglia were available longer, or... AS-P did say there were money issues, they didn't get everything they wanted..

Rory trust fund. Didn't bother me a lot. She's floundering and 'broke', but never really, of course. She's fine (financially), but can still FEEL 'broke'...

Netflix saying 'Season 1' doesn't mean anything, but sure, there could be more. (With a different title, though, that theoretical thing would ALSO be a 'Season 1', but we'd consider it 'Season 9'...)

I don't like your Final Four Words better as an ending (... but yeah, that COULD be the next thing Lorelai says...)

(But I get the criticism that this would have been a better story for 22 year-old Rory than 32... still, I don't think this is as poor a reverse-engineering as, like, the Kings wanting to end TGW with a slap because they had one in the pilot...)

Logan is very likely the father.
It's not the wookie.
It COULD be Jess, but... it's a bigger stretch that we wouldn't have seen more of them together (than it is that her one-night stand was entirely off-screen). The implication is stronger that Jess may step up and be 'Luke' to single-Mom Rory...

Logan is STILL doing whatever his father makes him do. He's not putting up any kind of fight.

The Netflix binge model is imperfect, but increasingly, week-to-week viewing is 'done' and go-at-your-own-pace is 'it', but yeah, being spoiled sucks...

I find all this dialogue interesting because I had never heard of The Gilmore Girls and I mean never ever heard of it. So I looked it up and I see it was a show that was in the past and now there is some kind of recap on Netflix or something. I guess if I had heard of it I forgot about it or didn't try it because it is listed as a comedy and there are basically no comedies that I ever liked I can count on one hand the comedies I like to maybe not make it to 5 and they would have been Ally McBeal which I know sounds nauseating, I don't know how I ever watched it. I used to like Scrubs in addition to. I used to like Sex In The City the original ones but grew tired of that in the movies were just horrendous and sad in a way because these women all were too old to be acting like they were. I tried Parks and Recreation and found nothing funny or entertaining about it and it is reviewed very well and many people like it. I love the humor in Saul, or Fargp, but these are sort of black humour Sidelines that really are not the focus of the show. So what exactly was this show was it like some kind of soap opera That was supposed to be funny or what?

I am looking for shows to watch on demand or on Netflix because we are going to run out of them over the break here and some of the shows like I witness were limited runs.

No 'The' before Gilmore Girls in the title. Yes. It was a show (on the WB; became CW for the last year) from 2000 to 2007 and now there's a new mini-season on Netflix.

I liked Ally McBeal.

I liked Scrubs (still a couple seasons I haven't seen, in the middle).

I haven't seen Sex and the City. 'Someday'...

I loved Parks & Recreation.

I don't think you'd like Gilmore Girls. You might not HATE it, but I don't think it'd hold your interest very long. Yeah, sort of a soap... it's funny, but maybe equal parts comedy and drama, so the classification is 'wrong' whichever you say it is...

Pitch at the beginning - 32 year-old woman had a daughter when she was 16, and now the daughter is 16... they live in a small town in Connecticut. Lorelai runs an inn. Rory gets into a fancy private school, but Lorelai needs to turn to her parents (with whom she's been largely estranged from for all of Rory's life) for a loan... they consent, as long as both ladies agree to weekly dinners with them...

Rory's main love interest in the last half of the series is Matt Czuchry, who you know as Cary Agos on The Good Wife.

Rory is played by the impossibly gorgeous Alexis Bledel, who was Beth (Howard's wife, that Pete had an affair with) on Mad Men. Bledel and Vincent Kartheiser (Pete) are now married.

Wait. Dax you haven't seen SatC? :banned:

I think the fact that I liked Cary because I liked Logan was mentioned in TGW posts. :hearts:

In fact, I could relate it to liking Philip of GL. I think I have a thing for angsty cute rich boys. :D I'm not gonna try to defend him or justify it, because I know a lot of it is fanwanky stuff in my own head. Sort of like I liked Pete, on MM, and think Bledel isn't nearly good enough for him.

I did read the past posts here and will follow up soon.

Well I didn't like Cary on The Good Wife, and I don't particularly care for the actor.

Hard to believe that anyone missed out on Sex in the City. It was quite the thing in its time. But I was getting sort of tired of it toward the end. I saw one of the movies and it was observed in terrible and I understand the other one or two if there were two was even worse. Having seen it when I did I wouldn't be watch it and I'm not sure I would even recommend watching it now because it really was something set in a certain period of time with certain attitudes.

Oh, yes SATC is definitely of its time. I didn't actually see it during it's initial run but only years later in re-runs. I am...ambivalent about it. I will say that I liked almost all of the characters more than I liked SJP's Carrie.

That said, I still enjoy watching from time to time if it is running on any of the networks at a time when I can see it. (I still don't DVR).
