Six shows, starts filming this summer. Fun quasi-coincidence that NBC has two Thursday night series with Duchovny (Aquarius) and Anderson [Hannibal) airing together this summer...

I'll be happy to watch them, but not with the same enthusiasm, you know, that I've got for a revived Twin Peaks...

But when it became a 'probably will happen' a few months ago, I was kinda hoping for more like ten or twelve hours... oh, well...

I was a big fan when it aired on Friday nights but lost interest after it jumped to Sundays. Loved The Smoking Man and the mythology episodes, but I have no idea where it left off.

6 episodes sounds like a short order but the UK shows do a good job with those short seasons.

I'd always look forward to the mythology episodes (because, you know, I'm a big fan of serial storytelling...), but then they'd almost always be disappointing... I preferred a lot of the one-offs.

Left off... Um. In the 2002 finale, Mulder and Scully kinda became fugitives... Don't really remember why... Smoking Man was killed by a big missile blast (or WAS he?... Yeah, he looked pretty darned dead). We learned that the big alien invasion (that the whole conspiracy arc was about) was set to happen in December of 2012...

I don't really recall the plot to the 2008 movie, but I remember liking it, thinking it was a 'fine' B-level longer episode with a bigger budget and more overt lovey-dovey scenes between them than they'd done on the show. It wasn't super-duper awesome or anything, but it didn't suck, and I've been surprised to see so many negative comments on it in articles today... (It was a box office failure, but I think that was due to when it was released more than its quality...)

So shows 1, 4, and 6 will be the 'mythology' episodes, written and directed by Chris Carter (story credits on 6 to Margaret Fearon and Anne Simon). Titles of those are My Struggle, Babylon (EDIT - this one's a standalone, not a 'mythology', said Carter in October), and My Struggle II.

2 - Home Again - written and directed by Glen Morgan (EDIT - airs fourth)
3 - Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster - written and directed by Darin Morgan
5 - Founder's Mutation - written and directed by James Wong (EDIT - This one airs second now, not fifth... Morgan's must be #5 now, then...)

Returning cast (besides Duchovny and Anderson...)
-
Skinner (Mitch Pileggi)
Monica Reyes (Annabeth Gish)
Scully's Mom, Margaret (Sheila Larkin)

Back From Presumed Death Cast
-
Smoking Man (William B. Davis)
Byers (Bruce Harwood)
Langly (Dean Haglund)
Frohike (Tom Braidwood)

New people played by Joel McHale, Annet Mahendru (Nina on The Americans), Rhys Darby, Kumail Nunjani, Robbie Amell, and my great love, Lauren Ambrose.

I'll be interested in watching a 22 minute 'making of' piece AFTER the season, but I don't want a bunch of spoilers beforehand...

I had wanted to love the premiere... I did not. It was really, really bad. I'd read Sepinwall's review and thought 'oh, hopefully he's just being way too hard on it'... no. He was right.

Still excited to see the rest - hope tonight's is better - but this was a terrible re-introduction. I can't imagine Duchovny or Anderson were at all pleased when they received the script.

Dax, glad (kinda) to read your take. To me, it wasn't so different than how I felt about it before. Hubby kept exclaiming about how illogical different things were (which I had always done, as well as shout at the tv for stupid stuff they said when it would have been just as easy to actually be scientifically correct without even using more syllables even). That has not stopped him from planning to watch tonight's show, though.

I always liked when they explored creepy crawly weird stuff rather than the conspiracy stuff. Not that I don't love a good conspiracy theory and indulging in a few myself from time to time but...

Gosh I'm disappointed about the reviews. I haven't watched it yet. I want my husband to watch it with me but he is so quick to judge and doesn't give stuff a chance I will have to warn him.

I think hubby was disappointed. I wasn't. While I genuinely enjoyed X Files during its heyday, I also saw its flaws and inwardly rolled my eyes at a lot of it. But took it all in fun/entertainment. If I had taken it as an attempt at honest discourse about anything remotely scientific (even within the limits/realm of tv) my head would have exploded. Hubby and daughter watched it more faithfully than I did, in the day.

So, if you look at it as entertainment, then I think you can enjoy it. There were a number of things that made my head explode related to how/who/when delivered 'test results' to Scully. I mean really.

Yeah.

I wrote this under Sepinwall's post about it http://www.hitfix.com/whats-alan-watching/lets-talk-about-that-not-so-great-x-files-premiere >> I saw no reason Mulder should have believed anything about O'Malley and Sveta's stories until the demo of the craft in the hanger, and even with that, no proof of Everything We Knew Was Wrong.

I was never a fan of the meandering mythology arc, but I still don't think the best way to get Mulder, Scully, and Skinner working together was by negating much or all of what they'd established up to now. Silly.

-

Before we had the term 'binge watching', X-Files was one of the shows I caught up with that way, after it was five seasons in (also in the same era - Ally McBeal, The Practice, Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel) but before the first movie, as FX was stripping it as a daily, and I was setting my vcr and making tapes...

I didn't like what I saw of the show early on, though my Mom and former-best-friend/pseudo-sister loved it and would watch it together all the time. I would be around for dumb parts, thought Duchovny mumbled a lot, and I resented HOW popular it was, when Twin Peaks was far superior and, you know, burned brightly, briefly, sputtered, and then died.

But at some point, I decided I'd give it a chance... that it was one of those shows I 'should' like... and I did. Mostly. (Thought a lot better of Duchovny after I'd gotten used to him).

There were many fantastic standalone episodes.

I love 'soap', of course, so I looked FORWARD to the mythology episodes, the recurring characters, the conspiracies... but then I'd always be disappointed by them. Carter didn't know what the hell he was doing with the long-form story. It was bad. It frequently didn't make much sense.

So you think that I'd LIKE that he'd hit the 'reset button' on the aliens, and make it a man-made conspiracy instead, but... no. They were way too far down that path - Mulder and Scully saw too much of ____ to go back and say 'maybe I was cleverly manipulated' just because of the really unconvincing scenes with last night's new characters.

Ugh.

But yes, still eager for the rest, and I'll probably root FOR 'more' instead of against it, but... the premiere was awful, and I expect the finale will be, too...

Everything I'm reading about it today says #3 (next Monday) is awesome, a classic, a lot of fun... Excited for that.

-

One of my friends from college (Curtis C.) was in 7.12, 'X-Cops', the funny one that was shot as a parody of Cops... and was written by Vince Gilligan. Cool.

My favorite X-F WTF continuity thing was when Smoking Man shot and killed his son, Jeffrey - in his office at the FBI! - in 6.12 and the show chose not to even ADDRESS it - at all, not even a single mention of the guy - until 9.16 (he wasn't dead, just disfigured, it turned out...).

So when people gave Lost shit about being stingy with 'answers'...

#2 - Founder's Mutation - by James Wong.

A lot better. That's the show. Weird and creepy things happen. Mulder and Scully shine flashlights around.

Good to see Kacey Rohl (Abigail on Hannibal, Agnes in-the-hospital here), even if it was just one quick scene.

Milo didn't like when Mrs. Goldman threw the apple, but Mulder's "You don't like cats?" was a great line in response to it.

I agree: a vast improvement. It was less clear that Scully and Mulder were separately fantasizing what their relationship with their son would have been like, if they had kept him

For some reason, Episode 1 isn't available on my FOX OD. Even though I haven't seen anyone say anything good about it, I'd still like to watch the episode.

"Founder's Mutation" was good fun. I'm not sure I've wrapped my head around why the guy killed himself in the beginning, but how could I not love two kids using their telekinetic powers to get revenge. Carrie is one of my favorite movies, after all.

Cool to see Kacey Rohl here. Hannibal must have really helped her resume. She also has a recurring role on The Magicians.

And WOW, Doug Savant! Where the hell did they dig him up from?

Loved the Planet of the Apes scene playing in the background.

You know, I didn't recognize Savant, or catch his name in the credits. Weird.

I think the suicide was just because he really, really wanted the noise to stop.

#3 - Mulder & Scully Meet the Were-Monster by Darin Morgan.

Whee, that was fun. Loved it. Totally agree with Sepinwall - http://www.hitfix.com/whats-alan-watching/review-why-tonights-x-files-made-the-whole-revival-worthwhile

Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster

That was so funny! The Were-Monster's story was great. I loved the "I became conscious of my own self-consciousness" that started his journey to human-hood. Mocking the absurdity of daily human life is one of my favorite things.

Home Again

The power of nostalgia. It was cool to see Scully's mother again, even in a limited capacity. Reminded me of Duane Barry, which still gives me goosebumps, although I realize Margaret Scully was on the show before Barry showed up.

While the explanation for the Band-Aid-Nose man was interesting, the story felt like it wasn't fully developed. I was hoping for some kind of dialogue between the B-A-N man and the artist.

With all the Sturm und Drang over William, I'm assuming this is all leading to some big reveal in the finale.

4 - Home Again by Glen Morgan

Fine character story for Scully and good interplay between her and Mulder... I liked how Band-Aid Nose Man ripped the people apart... nah, I wouldn't have had him and the Trashman talk, I don't think, unless it was a one-sided conversation...

'Downtown' will probably be running in a loop in my head for the next few days, but since I was already way more familiar with that song than Johnny Mathis' 'S'Wonderful', it's unlikely that memories of this episode will be triggered any time I hear it...

So... so far, I have found the revival
1 ... D-
2 ... B-
3 ... A
4 ... B

That the next two are by Chris Carter is a negative for me, but I'm hoping that will be outweighed by Lauren Ambrose (whom I love muchly) being in the next one (and Byers/Langley/Frohike, too!), and catching up with Reyes again in the finale...

I am hoping there's a 'next time', that it's something more like 10 instead of 6 (Anderson's time from her home and family in England seems to be the biggest and best reason that they can't do more), and that the timing lines up just right so that Gilligan can do one...
