http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/act-four/wp/2015/05/19/game-of-thrones-has-always-been-a-show-about-rape/?tid=pm_pop_b I give fuck all for motivation. I am sick of rape as entertainment or plot point. |

I expect it's about Theon AND Sansa. That makes more sense than one or the other. Joffrey's purple face was a beautiful thing, but it was really much too fast that he was dead. When Ramsay's time comes... http://www.vulture.com/2015/05/game-of-thrones-iwan-rheon-on-ramsay-sansa-wedding-night.html |

I read that WP article. Not sure I agree with some of the assessments. I DO know that ASoIaF is GRRM's deconstruction of the fantasy, and the romance fantasy is one of the tropes - so sure, he's destroying that fantasy. And no doubt, the number of women from time immemorial who were taught my their mums to "Lie there and think of England" is surely most of women throughout history, because sex has always been about male dominance, and only a bit about male pleasure. And so for GRRM to puncture the disney princess fantasy is right and proper within the context of his premise. But there are two problems, imo. First, the Book veers a little too close to the depths of despair, toys with the premise that life is pretty much always awful, which I don't believe is true and so don't really want to be worn down with that world view. The book presents a very skewed view of life. Dark, depressing, horrifying. So few bright spots I cannot think of them. And the problem is that people keep expecting balance, or that happy ending, or a least SOME bit of hope and joy, and when they are denied EVERY SCRAP of it, they rebel even moreso when faced with the bleakness. Second, when that premise is translated to the screen, it's even more visually confrontational. Add in the sense that the Show uses 'sexposition' and HBO sexed up scenes for gratuitous titillation*, and the 'deconstruction of the fantasy' turns into the mutilation of humanity. I don't know that The Show can bear up under the weight of trying to be more than a well told fantasy epic adventure. Not every sex scene or bit of nudity, and maybe not even that rape scene, but enough overall to taint the 'honest' scenes of brutality? |

Thing is, it's more violent than the first two Mad Max films with far more gratuitous rape as background. At least they should be a little more honest and throw in some male rape. I have a hard time not seeing a lot of misogyny --on the part of the author. |

Under a George Takei fb post... Tyrion Lannister likes this post. (Tiny thumb barely visible at bottom) Jaime Lannister likes this post. (Wrist, no hand) The Mountain likes this post. (Two bloody thumbs) I like that. |

So much win in this episode. -Bronn lives! What a cool scene. And Jerome Flynn can sing. (I'm loving him in Ripper Street.) -Ghost saves the day, woohoo. And Sam breaks his vows. Heading south I'd guess. -Lovely ending for Aemon. -Will Stannis sacrifice Shireen? I just can't believe it. -Cersei's karma. -Tyrion meets Dany. OMFG :P Only the stuff with Sansa really making me cringe. |

Very glad Bronn didn't die. Nice save, but I would have been happier if Ghost tore those guys apart (even if it would mean two less on the Watch...). |

Tyrion meeting Daenerys was cool. I'm curious about what they'll have to say to each other. But it doesn't feel like a big deal to me, as I just don't see her taking King's Landing and sitting on the throne any time soon. Still hate Sansa being abused at Winterfell. Didn't we already play this game with Joffrey a few seasons ago? Ghost showing up was a nice treat. Sometimes I forget about the direwolves. Wish we'd see them more often. Ok, Bronn didn't die but what was the point of that Sand Snake showing her tits before letting him have the antidote? Meeting a T&A quota? I thought maybe she was going to tell him that getting an erection made the poison act more quickly. Silly, silly Cersei finally gets her comeuppance. I thought we were going to have to wait for another episode or two, so that was a pleasant surprise. Having a bad feeling about how this is going to go for Stannis. Always happy to spend some time with the Queen of Thorns. Olenna vs. the High Sparrow was fun. |

<<Still hate Sansa being abused at Winterfell. Didn't we already play this game with Joffrey a few seasons ago?>> This is Game of Thrones. There must not be any episodes where there isn't mention of or threat of rape of at least one woman. On the other hand, it is hard for me to believe that she was so stupid to trust Theon. Loved that Ghost showed up. We do need more direwolves. <<Ok, Bronn didn't die but what was the point of that Sand Snake showing her tits before letting him have the antidote? Meeting a T&A quota? I thought maybe she was going to tell him that getting an erection made the poison act more quickly.>> Yes! My thoughts exactly, both for the T&A quota and that an erection would make the poison act more quickly. The eye rolling of the sisters was pretty good. Very happy that Tyrion and Daenerys finally meet. I like the Queen of Thorns but I don't have any kind of good feeling about the High Sparrow. I'd like to see him get his. |

Possibile retcon defense of scene: :P 1. The Sand Snakes had distinct personalities in the books so part of the weight of that scene may have been lost due to character compression. 2. Bronn is a Show Only character so we have no idea where he's heading in life. Maybe he marries this Sand Snake and this was 'meet cute.' 3. Bronn was singing about Dornish women and then implied Sand Snake girl wasn't beautiful, and she is so shallow and vain (see #1) she just HAD to wring an admission from him about her beauty. 4. But I'm going with the T&A quota needing a jolt. Bilki, it would have been awesome if The Show had given us "The Erection Solution" to poisons. :D |

The erection playing a part in how the poison did or didn't act would have made the scene more interesting. I'm sure the straight males who watch the show didn't mind, though. I did wonder if maybe this was the start of a romance between Bronn and that Sand Snake. It would be less frustrating to watch Sansa at Winterfell if this was about her using what she learned while at King's Landing to her advantage. Didn't she learn anything during her time with Littlefinger? I thought we were supposed to believe he is some kind of master manipulator. It's annoying that she's been through so much, yet has to beg Theon or hope for Brienne to save her. It doesn't help that Ramsay Snow is a villain without a single likable quality. I get that rape is a reality of this world but the show never deals with it in a thoughtful manner, that I can think of. It's just something the audience is supposed to sit through and endure. Ugh. I think I got that out of my system for this week, lol. |

Shame it wasn't Keisha Castle-Hughes' Sand Snake, because then they could have fulfilled the Oscar-Nominated Child Actress Now Doing Nudity On HBO Quota that has been going unfulfilled sinceTrue Blood ended... (tossed in 'nominated' for Castle-Hughes, but Paquin did win...) |

Holy shit! Looks like The Others just declared war! But do they think Jon Snow is Azor Ahai??? Does The Many-Faced God play a part in all of this? I'm assuming Arya's "journey" isn't totally irrelevant. -----(after a second viewing) While I'm not the biggest fan of battle sequences, that was awesome. Loved Wun Wun, the giant, throwing the wights off of him. Jon's fight with that White Walker was great, and the look on its face when it realized Jon wasn't fighting with an ordinary sword. I'm assuming it knew if it didn't kill Jon that would be its last fight. The lady wildling was so cool. Too bad about those "kids" showing up. And the final sequence when the White Walker gave Jon Snow that "Game ON!" face. Loved it! Tyrion and Daenerys were interesting together. That was one of the few times this season I actually wanted to watch a scene with Daenerys that didn't feature a dragon. I'm enjoying Arya but I can see why some are bored with it. Sansa finally finds out about Bran and Rickon! Edited by bilki, Jun 1 2015, 12:01 AM.

Wow. Great hour... And every bit 'a big one' as we're used to seeing in a #9... The little magic trick at the end... Yeah. Makes the living look really and thoroughly fucked. Bummed that lady wildling didn't make it... I liked her. Dany/Tyrion scenes were terrific. Dinklage makes gold out of every thing they give him to say... I liked the Arya stuff a lot tonight. I haven't disliked the previous batches, but this one was cooler since she's 'on a job', not just asking questions (or being made to answer them) and waiting... |

My main frustration with the show is that most of what's happening in Westeros seems insignificant knowing that the White Walkers are coming with their army and it ain't gonna be pretty, lol. I just noticed "Lady Stoneheart" in the link you posted above, Dax. It made me smile but I'm not getting my hopes up for her again, even though now I'll be looking for her to show up throughout EP10. I've always found that a plus more than a frustration, all these dummies thinking that it MATTERS who is on the Iron Throne and ignoring the whole 'Winter is Coming' thing... Agree, best not to expect Lady Stoneheart. Maybe. 'No' is PROBABLY more likely, I think, but I don't take the denials or that-it-didn't-happen-last-year as a 'definitely not', either... |

Considering my fondness for irony, I'm a bit surprised I don't appreciate it more than I do. Perhaps next season we'll get more scenes of the people of Westeros (and Essos) reacting to the realization that the shit's about to hit the fan. I get that the show can't do every story but doing Stoneheart just seems like a win-win for everyone. |

LOL ... Love this caption ~ ‘Game of Thrones’ Recap: Oh, So That’s What Winter Looks Like >> all these dummies thinking that it MATTERS who is on the Iron Throne and ignoring the whole 'Winter is Coming' thing... This cracks me up. It's too bad they don't have social media so they could stream this shit to Westeros. The only one I have faith in helping with the White Walkers would be Dany because of the Dragons but I'm not even sure they could help. Dany really should be working on training those dragons. ;) Loved last nights episode. So bummed about the Wildling lady and the kids showing up. Love Dany/Tyrion scenes. My 2 favorites together. I had to explain what Arya was doing to hubby. It has been confusing him and boring but last night was good seeing her move into action. Go Sansa go! I gotta say that I liked she was dressed and ready to confront Theon and finally found out her brothers are alive or could be. |

That was an awesome episode. I kept thinking...what the heck is happening in #9 if this is only E8. Big Big agreements on everyone's comments. We must all be putty in D&D's hands, thinking alike, reacting in concert. :P Though I continue to be underwhelmed with Arya's story. I think it will depend on whether LS was a plot distraction to keep the '5 year gap' in play, or if she actually has a role in the end-game. I read some spec that the power of the white walkers to raise the zombie-wights could be countered by The Lord of Light's red priests' ability to raise the dead too, with a form of life that includes a level of identity and purpose. It's important to remember Beric was raised, and LS is only 'zombie-like' because of the extent and type of her wounds, and the length of time she lies dead before resurrection. |

If Martin were oh, so keen on making his books more accurately reflect real life war, a lot more men would be raped. It is a fantasy story and I don't have any problem with that. But there are choices and as he points out, there have been plenty of other fantasy franchises which did not involve rape as background scenery. |

Georgie may be a little hard on the women with the rapes but he isn't exactly easy on the guys either. I have never seen so many castrated men on one show (book) in my life. ;) Just saying. |
