Out from 4 - Joffrey, Ygritte, Shae, The Hound, Tywin (though his body is in 5.1) Sitting Out Season 5 - Bran Main Cast - Tyrion, Jaime, Cersei, Daenerys, Jon, Sansa, Samwell, Littlefinger, Varys, Brienne, Stannis, Margaery, Davos, Melisandre, Gilly, Tormund. (Not in #1, but that doesn't mean anything - Arya, Ser Jorah, Reek, Bronn, Ramsey) Promoted up from Recurring - Daario (Michiel Huisman), Missandei, Dany's translator (Nathalie Emmanuel), Tommen (Dean-Charles Chapman, who was in five Season 4 episodes; Chapman also played Martyn Lannister in two Season 3 episodes; child actor Callum Whary played Tommen in four episodes of each of the first two seasons...). - Enjoyed the premiere. Funny how close in proximity Brienne was to Sansa.... |

Seriously? No Bran this season? Oy, my enthusiasm for this show is really waning. Watching the Brienne/Arya/The Hound scenes from last season's finale did get me back in the mood. But other than the Jon/Mance scenes, I was almost bored with this episode. Perhaps it's because we get such little bits of all these different storylines that I have some trouble feeling invested. Silly Daenerys. Of course those dragons are going to be pissed. |

Yeah. They've likened Bran to Luke between Empire and Jedi, saying it'll be cooler if we don't see all his training sequences, but he returns and has some mastery over his powers... We will be getting Arya getting HER training, though... I keep hoping The Hound isn't REALLY dead.. |

My understanding is that some BookWalkers believe that he's still alive, though the circumstances surrounding his death in the books was different. I think we may have discussed this when last season ended. With the show moving further away from the books, it's hard to know who's really dead and who's not. The show only dealt with the powers of resurrection that one time. And yes, I'm still mad about Lady Stoneheart. |

We did talk about it then, yes. Just repeating in the spirit of 'still hoping' - though there's been no rumblings that he might actually turn up... http://www.ew.com/article/2015/04/12/game-thrones-cersei-flashback?asdf http://www.ew.com/article/2015/04/12/game-thrones-mance-rayder-dead |

So yeah, since you posted the above link about Mance, I'm going to say that I'm disappointed in how they've killed him on the show. His story after this point in the books was another thing I was looking forward to. I'm starting to think that knowing so much about the books is becoming my downfall, lol. Oh well. |

Okay, spoil me on that much... how did he die in the book, about how much later, and (I read the spoilery bit in the EW interview), how did they 'cheat' his death? He wasn't one of those resurrection/zombie types, I'm taking it, but the circumstances were a lot friendlier to a 'faked death' than, say, being burned in front of everybody...? Oh. Or this might answer that for me... http://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2015/04/does-mance-rayder-die-in-the-books Yeah, that mostly cleared it up, but now I'm wondering why Melisandre did that... Anyway. Agree with the VF author that Hinds is very probably that anonymous actor EW is quoting... http://www.esquire.com/entertainment/tv/interviews/a34292/game-of-thrones-ciaran-hinds-mance-rayder-interview/ http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/04/13/game-of-thrones-premiere-postmortem-the-cast-on-the-big-death-jon-snow-s-virginity-and-more.html |

Loved the premiere, especially the material at the Wall and with Tyrion. I agree with Bili though there's a LOT of hopping around, and it won't get much better given the goals of this season and the seeming commitment to keep this at seven seasons. Dax, this will help you understand the baby swap plot that is apparently nixed. http://www.bustle.com/articles/28039-gillys-babys-game-of-thrones-fate-should-be-different-from-the-books At one point, somewhere, there was a theory that Rance was Rhaegar, not dead but king-beyond-the-wall, having lost Lyanna... Spoiler: click to toggle Hiding in case the longest specced GOT theory ever, spoiled everywhere, hasn't crossed your screen. For those who don't mind being (possibly) spoiled about some Book 5 events (since some are already playing out, and some never will, and hell it's all different now, see?) - here is a well developed and explained summary of the conspiracy theories and major spec ideas in the GoT world. http://www.dailydot.com/geek/comprehensive-game-of-thrones-conspiracy-theories/ Another excellent list of things that are now spoiled NOT to happen in the show any more. Caveat - JIC they happen anyway.... http://io9.com/5-game-of-thrones-book-plots-were-glad-the-tv-show-is-s-1691715991 #1 seems hard to skip. Like, really odd. I read over the summer the casting spec about this and am STILL not convinced the spoilers aren't wrong. Glad of 2 & 3, literally don't remember #5*, really happy about #4, though I only know about it via hearsay from Book 4&5 spoilers and recaps and friends. * Spoiler: click to toggle This article outlines the plots likely to play out this season, based on characters, so avoid at all cost if you are spoiler-averse. Parking it here for those of us who want a good review of what is coming, given all that is cut. (The estimate is that at least half of the plots from Books 4&5 will be cut.) http://observationdeck.io9.com/game-of-thrones-season-5-plot-probabilities-1688788625 Edited by KMInfinity, Apr 13 2015, 08:32 PM.

I couldn't find the answer myself but found someone who explained to me that Jon asked Melisandre to save Mance, which actually seems to be the only reason that makes some sense. OMG! If they skip that, it will be one more thing that pisses me off, LOL! |

KMI, my head hurts just trying to figure out what you are talking about and trying to remain spoiler free. :D I'm still on Book 1 so there is ZERO chance me catching up in the books before this season plays out. It will be fun to see the differences when I get there in the books. Enjoyed the premier of Season 5. |

Sorry Gate. I wanted them here so I could check back and compare after the season. The first spoiler is ery mild and has to do with spec about Jon's parentage. The second link is probably safe since it is about what ISN'T in the show anymore, what's been cut or changed beyond recognition. |

Jaqen H'ghar! There's one change from the books that I can appreciate! It would be nice if Kit Harrington had more of an onscreen presence but Jon's win of Lord Commander was pretty cool, nonetheless. Watching Cersei make a mess of things should be fun. I've given up on giving a damn about Daenerys. It was cool to see Drogon but she's been reduce to the fast-forward treatment. Interesting story about Gilly's sisters who had greyscale. |

Two recurrings given main cast credit now, Indira Varma as Ellaria Sand (0/0/0/4) and Tom Wlaschiha as Jaqen H'ghar (0/6/0/0)... Sam's speech for Jon was great. Good Brienne action.. |

Poor Brienne. Her great purpose in life seems to be protecting Catelyn's daughters and neither of them wants anything to do with her. With that haircut, I wasn't sure if that was Ellaria Sand or someone else. Her voice did seem familiar to me, though. |

I think Brienne has yet to find Sansa in the books, so this is reaally full speed ahead storytelling. I think folks didn't expect the Lord Commander to happen until end of season... Good! Jamie and Bronn loose in Dorne....also brand new... I'll have to check out some other book/show analysis threads. I actually liked Dani's stuff. As it gets more nitty gritty regarding ruling, I like it better. |

Poor Sansa. Poor me. Now I have to watch Ramsay Snow scenes. I really hope this story is about the downfall of the Boltons. Arya's scenes were somewhat interesting. Proud of Jon Snow for chopping off that idiot's head. It's odd to me that we got a mention of Thoros of Myr in this episode, yet they've done so little to explore Melisandre and her abilites. At least her shadow baby got a mention. |

I need to do some major research. I'm used to sort of knowing what's the what and I am totally lost at this point. I guess I could just go with the flow, but in the back of my mind too many small points lurk that tug at my mind unless I can see how the changes fit into the grand picture. This was an awesome episode despite my jaw dropping a lot. I do know that a lot of people are bug-eyed over Sansa in Winterfell, because that has not happened. And if she's there because her story is mimicing a different book character's, then Bookwalkers are about to stroke-out. Though Spoiler: click to toggle It's also important to notice that the Show has decided No Consummation = never married. So Sansa/Tyrion is a no go, we assume, as an endgame.I haven't read AFfC or ADwD but know Arya's story pretty well. I didn't much like the direction she took, admittedly thru reading summaries and spoilers. What's odd is that a major factor in two whole books is her connection with Nymeria, and that's been missing a long time now. I really was hoping for that connection to be reignited before she took ship, or somehow afterwards but 3 episodes in, I guess the wolves are not going to factor as strongly are they do n the books. And I know people who love the books especially for that magical Stark-wolf bond. I was also thinking Tyrion was getting a major rehaul in plot, but not so fast.... Which means Dany's story may mature more slowly than hoped for by many. Time will tell. Still haven't heard his famous quote, so there's hope. Cersei's new mad scientist is hard at work. Show is keeping that plot it seems. ::shudder:: King'sLanding - The big one is how things will flow differently since Tommen is clearly not 8 and playing with kittens. :firemad: That scene with Cersei and Margery was so nuanced and so delicious! Everything on the Wall is always awesome AFAIC. This show is really telegraphing Brienne vs Stannis. And I like them both. Ah well. I'm surprised a bit by the number of fans at PTV who commented that the episode benefited from no-Dany. Edited by KMInfinity, Apr 27 2015, 08:26 PM.

I'm still on Book 2 so i haven't a clue the differences yet. I really like Jon Snow growing a pair and chopping that guy's head off. >>Cersei's new mad scientist is hard at work. lol...is it a spoiler if you're forgetful of stuff and i remind you? Seriously, a big part of the fun for me is comparing Book/Show so if I cross a line, especially by speculating what ISN'T happening, maybe a mod can cover with spoiler code? I'll try doubly hard not to spoil. |

It's probably different for Gate right now because she's at the start of her reading marathon... I've always been interested in the show/book differences but la-la-la-spoilerphobic in that I didn't, like, wanna know who dies and when. But with the deviations increasing and the material being adapted running out... I'm clicking on things now that I wouldn't have before... |

The Mountain, in the fight where he squished Oberyn's head into putty. The Mountain is, of course, an awesome candidate to be a kind of 'Frankenstein's Monster'. (I continue to hope The Hound might be alive, but if he is, that's a show-not-books-so-far thing, though in the books, the fight wasn't between The Hound and Brienne...) |
