I don't know what you mean. There's his needy 'Everybody Please Love Me' thing, but I don't think it really got in the way of the story...
Ymmv, but I think he doesn't decide on a story to tell and the needs of the story and characters drive the story, but instead he actively looks for ways and reasons to show the most awful crap in the most awful context. Maybe he thinks that's being 'real' or 'brave.' imo he crosses the line into the whole violence-porn arena.

Five seasons vs. seven... Yeah, there was some stretching to keep Jax from killing Clay a lot sooner, for sure... but the show's popularity well-warranted the seven
Don't care about popularity as a reason to keep going and in fact could argue that it made things worse, artistically. The bigger stretch for me was the way the story drove Jax into such a dark place, because he WAS a good man, with a good heart, and a moral center...but the fatal flaw was his love of the club and the life. We didn't need to see so much of the violence FROM JAX to understand he was torn between Tara and a different future vs the club. If the Clay/Tara/Gemma ties were handled differently and in a tighter time frame, I think the show could have ended with Jax tragically dying as a consequence of his inability to untangle himself from all of his moral dilemmas, yet still with an innate goodness intact.

A better ending, imo.

(and thus also truer to the Hamlet paradigm)

Okay... I half-agree... I do think he mostly lets characters drive story, BUT if there's a way to include (____, an awful thing), he'll find it and throw it in, yes.

He DID show some restraint this season... a lady deputy was in mortal danger... and did not die, though she was in such a bad spot that it seemed as though she would... and a mother/son witness pair Marks needed dead... kept thinking they'd die, but they did not...

I think that's the story that was being told (he WON last year - he GOT them out of GUNS!) ... up until Tara's death. Gertrude didn't murder Ophelia with a fork.

Yeah. They did not do that. Instead, he recognized that he was more, you know, 'bad', and whatever was left of his goodness... recognized that he needed to get the kids the hell out of Charming, that Tara was right all along. I like that he told Nero that the kids need to grow up hating him, and I hope they do, but... yeah. Abel might be irrevocably fucked. Hopefully, Nero and Wendy can be a stronger influence for him in the future (not that they're saints, themselves, of course, but... relatively speaking...) than his memories of Gemma and Jax...

KMI, you are putting my thoughts right out there.

Too much violence that did not add to the story. Like the killing of the escorts, or the torture death of the Chinese guy. And really were all those gang shootings needed? Seriously, if THAT many people were shot dead in a relatively small area, the National Guard and ATF would have been swarmin on Charmin. Last of all Unser, he could have easily over come him, shit, I think I could have, but instead, BAM he was dead.

Yeah, I had hopes for Jax in the beginning and think your take would have made for a much better series.

Sutter is like a sadist, making us care about some of these characters then just turning them into non redeemable shits.

It's been fun seeing a couple Sons together on Bates Motel this season, Ryan Hurst (Opie) and Kenny Johnson (Kozik)..

I like Hurst a lot...

Johnson is a series regular this year, after a few appearances last year. I like him, too, but I always think of his Shield character first...

I wouldnt mind that. I dont know that I'm over the moon about it but I would watch. Without Sutter running the show I would be curious how over the top it would go, maybe not so much and that might be better. I enjoyed most of the Mayan angles on SOA so this could be okay.

Mostly agree.

Wouldn't care if it didn't happen, but expect I'd be too curious to NOT watch...

But even without Sutter showrunning, I think those over-the-top extremes would still continue... You know, consistency within that world...

I wanna see Little Birds.

'Script order' now, but this is all-but-certain to go to series.
