Better Call Saul; Season 1

In addition to Bob Odenkirk and Jonathan Banks reprising their roles as Saul Goodman and Mike Ehrmantraut, the full cast will include Michael McKean as Chuck, Rhea Seehorn as Kim, Patrick Fabian as Hamlin and Michael Mando as Nacho — "characters that will represent both legitimate and illegitimate sides of the law."

The series is set six years before Saul Goodman meets Walter White. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and, often, against Jimmy, is "fixer" Mike Ehrmantraut, a beloved character introduced in 'Breaking Bad.' The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts "criminal" in "Criminal lawyer." The series' tone is dramatic, woven with dark humor.

from EW's article >> After Gilligan’s premiere, Michelle MacLaren (Game of Thrones) will direct episode 2, Terry McDonough (who directed the first Saul episode) directs episode 3 and Colin Bucksey (four episodes of Breaking Bad) helms episode four and Adam Bernstein (Fargo) has episode 5.

It's fun that Michael Mando (Vic on Orphan Black) is in the cast. Patrick Fabian is a 'that guy' that pops up a lot, but I always think of his Veronica Mars Season 3 role as Prof. Landry...

They say they've broken 8 of the first 10 and haven't brought anybody back yet, don't want to make it a parade of greatest hits... but I do expect they'll find a way to get Gus in eventually... just probably not in the first season.

I can't wait. Do you think with all the hype it will live up to expectations?

Depends on what your expectations are...

It will not be as good as Breaking Bad. Let's all agree that we should not expect that. Nobody should be DISAPPOINTED to discover that it's not as good as BB.

But if we're talking about spin-offs... yes, I'm trusting/expecting that this will be closer to Frasier than, say, After M*A*S*H or Joey...

It may have been a wonky idea to GIVE them a spin-off, but I did LIKE Gilligan/Spotnitz/Shiban's The Lone Gunmen...

#1 will air (hooray!) on February 8th. That's a Sunday.

#2 will air the next night. That's Monday, and the show will air regularly there, Mondays at 10 (The Walking Dead keeps Sundays, and Mad Men will go after it's done...)

Cautiously optimistic. Sounds like the behind-the-scenes to get the show on the screen was quite stressful. Hoping that doesn't show through in what we see. Of course they're going to say they think they made the right choices. I can't remember ever reading a pre-show article in which the creators said, "Yeah, our new show kinda sucks."

No, but they are being pretty up-front with 'this wasn't easy' and 'we weren't SURE we weren't making a mistake until _____ (awhile into it)'.

Sepinwall wrote that he enjoyed 1 & 2, but has reservations... I look forward to reading what they are...

I trust the storytellers. We're in good hands. This should be great. AS great? No. The logline of 'the origin story of a sleazy lawyer' is just nowhere near as compelling as 'Science teacher, faced with terminal cancer, decides to cook meth as a means of support for his family after he's gone' and the Chips-to-Scarface thing.

Very happy we'll spend at least 23 more tv hours in this world, though. Fun, fun.

So NPR had a review of Better Call Saul on Fresh Air today and I listened during the commute.

http://www.npr.org/2015/02/04/383785664/better-call-saul-the-prequel-to-breaking-bad-is-as-good-as-the-first

The reviewer was really high on it and said it's just about as good as BB. He also said it's a no brainer not to hesitate to watch even if you missed BB. Which was my question since I am planning to watch BB 'soon' (this summer?) and didn't know if I should skip BCS until after BB.

Thoughts?

While I'm sure you COULD watch this cold and it'll be fine... I'd watch the 62 of BB first, and then watch these 10... These have a short window to get to Netflix - you won't have to wait for them... You'll be caught up for Season 2 this time next year...

Would you want somebody to see Star Wars 1-3 BEFORE 4-6? Won't I enjoy Caprica more if I watch it AFTER Battlestar Galactica?

The Twin Peaks movie is 98% prequel, but people should DEFINITELY watch the series first...

Also, we'll likely discuss some BB spoilers in here, so, like, go away until you're cooler by having gone through BB... (ha...)

I'll have a non-spoiler mini-review of #1 in the Watching thread...

My vote is that you could watch this first but I'm not as much of a purist as some people around here.

:D

P.S.--But why haven't you commented on The Americans yet, KMI?

I'm torn on being social Sunday night - friend's birthday gathering/screening-of-TWD-return at a bar, or staying at home and watching it and BCS in more comfortable surroundings....

Doing a double-feature of Justified and Americans tomorrow after work...

Three behind on Broadchurch now. Oops...

I can't wait to watch. Probably won't watch it live but the next day I'm sure but tempted not to wait. The buzz has been crazy for this show. I haven't seen one review that isn't positive.

Dax, I would go to the gather and watch TWD and then run home right afterwards and watch BCS. Best of both world ... how needs sleep anyways. ;)

Yeah. Monday's job is a 7:30 start, though... We'll see how I feel on Sunday... haven't decided. I'd like to see my friends, but...

I expect there will be people who don't like the show, because they'll wish it was something else instead, like The Further Adventures of Jesse, and won't be able to get past that.

But I'll be shocked if *I* don't love it, for sure...
