Did I see some new shows (maybe without dates yet) for AMC/FX in commercials and promos?

AMC is also developing a show based on Mary Doria Russell's sci-fi novel The Sparrow, about a Jesuit mission to another planet.
I am so excited by this I'm almost afraid to believe an actual intelligent SF/religion series could be in the works.

AMC - Halt and Catch Fire starts on 6/1. Dunno about Hell on Wheels 4 yet... three longer than previous seasons (13 instead of 10) and I don't know if they're going to continue the original-programming-on-Saturdays-it's-our-Westerns-night thing. But that'll start before Walking Dead returns in the fall... Breaking Bad prequel in November...

FX has Tyrant this summer, but I'm not sure when (guessing August...?). Think it had been June-slated at first, but The Strain (July) started being more specific, citing the month, where the first Tyrant spot (just last night, during Fargo) said 'Summer'.

No date yet... (and I'm thinking we might not get White Collar 'til fall... and it looks to be a final run of six episodes...)

Haven't seen any USA summer premiere dates yet... (I'll probably continue with Graceland...)

Funny timing, since you just asked last night...

http://www.tvguide.com/News/USA-Summer-Schedule-Suits-Covert-Affairs-1080795.aspx

My Mom loves Suits. I haven't seen it.

I watched the first season of Covert Affairs. It was okay, but I didn't need to continue...

I liked Graceland more than I thought I would (and it's fun that I know the actor playing Oberyn on GoT from here...)

Might sample Satisfaction. Not interested in Rush.

I love Suits too. It's B soapy stuff, and the plots are like convoluted soapy versions of Good Wife plots, but the characters are fun and it does have a unique style and sense of its own 'place' as a big-time NYC law firm. Gina Torres is just awesome and the goofy love-to-hate-him sorta weirdo bad guy (but he's OUR bad guy) Louis is just hilarious in his nerdy uncoolness to the point it rises to supercool. :P And those are secondary characters. ha.

Dax you'd like it. Think of it as White Collar for Law Firms...but better than White Collar.

I don't like WC, Burn Notice, Graceland or Covert Affairs. The dialog seems forced and too cutesy, sometimes I can just "hear" the acting. I had hope for all of them but after a few epi's just dropped them.

I have caught up on Resurrection. I actually like it but hsb doesn't so it is one of those I half watch while cleaning etc.

USA Today really panned Black Box (which looked awful) as well as Mean Teacher.

Yeah, Black Box and Bad Teacher both look bad.

I'll sample the latter just out of curiosity (I haven't seen the 2011 Cameron Diaz film, but plan to... this will be a going-in-reverse comparison...). Couple people in it that I like.

(But hey, though it's already pretty fucking hot outside, I'm not calling either of those 'summer' series yet... still 2013-14 season... but when 24 starts on 5/5, okay, THAT'S a 'summer show'...)

Anything new the next couple weeks? I know Dome will start in June. I was so unimpressed with last year, I don't know if I will bother with it. Thought I saw ads for various new ones to start soon..

There's Gang Related on Fox on 5/22. I don't know if it's gonna be any good.

I'll check out Crossbones on NBC (5/30) just because I love John Malkovich. He'll be a fun pirate.

Looking forward to AMC's Halt and Catch Fire on 6/1.

Dax, has there been any buzz about FX's Tyrant? Other than the boring promo with the really cool song, I don't know anything about it. It starts in a little over a month.

Not a lot of buzz yet, no, kinda quiet. I thought the promo looked cool the first few times, but... yeah, they need to say what it is a little better... go to its home page on futoncritic, it still shows that Ang Lee is directing the pilot (he didn't, David Yates did)...

http://www.deadline.com/2013/12/fx-tyrant-series-order-howard-gordon/

I think it'll be good.

My guilty pleasure show Hit the Floor is coming back over the summer. Plus I'll have Switched at Birth and the Fosters on ABCFamily. The only "good" tv I think I watch in the summer is Rectify and I try to get through some of my television DVD box sets. So You Think You can Dance and Big Brother round out my watching, though if anything looks good you'll let us know. We'll come up with a clearer list as the one up top is from January. :)

Top post was in January, but I do update it every time I get a new date for something... it's been edited two or three times a week for awhile... (but again, those are of just 'my' shows or things I'm planning to check out, so it's missing stuff like Suits that I don't watch...).

>> 13-episode series is set against the backdrop of the clandestine mission to build the world’s first atomic bomb in Los Alamos, New Mexico and follows the brilliant but flawed scientists and their families. John Benjamin Hickey, Olivia Williams, Daniel Stern, Ashley Zukerman, Katia Herbers, Christopher Denham, Harry Lloyd, Michael Chernus and Eddie Shin star.

Dunno if this might be of interest to anyone... (I'm not sure I get WGNAmerica...)

I get WGN, so thanks for that information. Once upon a time, WGN was my WB...but then they pulled WB programming outside of anyone who watched the station that didn't live in the Chicago area. That was an absolute nightmare as I lost Buffy and Angel (and this was during Angel season 1).

FX finally announced dates for The Bridge and The Strain... was wondering how they'd handle having three summer dramas... expanding to Sundays (with Strain) for the first time...

Tyrant - Tuesdays, starting 6/24.
Bridge 2 - Wednesdays, starting 7/9.
Strain - Sundays, starting 7/13.

http://www.hitfix.com/the-fien-print/interview-gang-related-showrunner-scott-rosenbaum-on-antiheroes-sheld-comparisons-and-more

I know I won't get around to this 'til Saturday or Sunday (the first couple of Penny Dreadful, too).

I will watch the premiere of Last Comic Standing tonight, as that sounds like a fine antidote to the Americans finale and my planned 3-or-4 episode marathon of Hannibal to go with it...

I know I haven't seen all the Last Comic Standing seasons (think I just watched bits & pieces of the first three - I remember some comics and Jay Mohr hosting, but I don't think I watched week-to-week), but I think I have seen 4-on. I think it's interesting how the series has come and gone so many times.

1 - Summer '03
2 - Summer '04
3 - Fall '04 (followed 3 way too closely... low-rated... canceled - finale even aired on Comedy Central)
4 - (revived) '06
5 - '07
6 - '08 (skips a year)
7 - '10 (skips three years, but it sure doesn't FEEL like it's been that long...)
8 - Now.

I like host JB Smoove, and they've announced some good guest mentors.

I like that it goes away for awhile... every year, I'd be less interested or inclined to keep watching, but as an every-once-in-awhile summer show, I like it.

Gang Related (Fox)
-
Ramon Rodriguez -- Ryan Lopez
Jay Hernandez -- Daniel Acosta
RZA -- Cassius Green
Sung Kang -- Tae Kim
Inbar Lavi -- Vee Harel
Shantel VanSanten -- Jessica Chapel
with Cliff Curtis -- Javier Acosta
and Terry O'Quinn -- Sam Chapel

There's a lot of stupid stuff, but it's kinda fun, too. Action movie aesthetic - it's created by Chris Morgan, who's written the Fast & The Furious franchise since #3 - with the same bromance/divided loyalties issues present there. I like Internal Affairs/The Departed-type stories where the guy is torn between being a cop and his longer-standing relationship with the bad guys.

I like the Asian guy (who played Han in the F&F movies).

Showrunner is Scott Rosenbaum, who wrote/produced for The Shield (and Jay Karnes cameos here, which was fun). Allen Hughes directed the pilot.

I haven't decided if I'll watch #2 yet. Will see if I'm in the mood for it next week (it airs on Thursdays...). Fienberg (at hitfix) liked it, and his interview with Rosenbaum intrigued me a little bit (more than just watching #1 did). I've seen plenty of bad reviews, too, though... I think whether or not you can buy in depends on your appetite or tolerance for dumb action movies. I sometimes enjoy them.

The Leftovers is based on a novel by Tom Perrotta. One day, 2% of the world's population vanishes. Was that The Rapture? Where'd they go? Now what? Stars Justin Theroux, Amy Brenneman, Christopher Eccleston, Liv Tyler... Showrunner is Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof. Ten episodes, HBO.

Penny Dreadful (Showtime)
-
Reeve Carney -- Dorian Gray
Timothy Dalton -- Sir Malcolm Murray
Eva Green -- Vanessa Ives
Rory Kinnear -- Frankenstein's Monster
Billie Piper -- Brony Croft
Danny Sapani -- Sembene
Harry Treadaway -- Dr. Victor Frankenstein
and Josh Hartnett -- Ethan Chandler

From screenwriter John Logan (Oscar noms for Gladiator, The Aviator, and Hugo)... a monster mash-up in London, 1891. Sir Malcolm and associate Vanessa recruit good-with-a-gun actor Ethan and a young doctor to assist on a rescue mission... Malcolm's daughter Mina has been kidnapped by a creature...

First hour didn't get too deep into the story (first season is eight episodes), but it's really pretty/ugly to look at... line in a review I liked was 'so overwrought and hyperbolic as to make American Horror Story seem subtle'...

I'll be watching the rest. #2 was on last week, and 3 premieres tonight...
