So for Christmas I got hubby The Wire on DVD. He was really excited so I was thrilled. I also got all of ER on DVD and he wasn't so thrilled so I'll watch those on my own. Dax wanted me to post my thoughts as we go along watching it so I set up this thread. We do want to be spoiler free so if you have any spoilers please use the spoiler tag and I won't peek. :D |

No spoilers from me... doubt I'll even put anything in spoiler tags... you'll probably have some questions, but do allow yourself the first five or six hours to be a little confused... the hard part is learning everybody's names. As with Game of Thrones, there are a LOT of characters. This is only HBO's fourth-to-start drama series, after Oz, Sopranos, and Six Feet Under. Started in the summer of 2002. Love the opening theme music, 'Way Down in the Hole' (each season has a different version - the original by Tom Waits is used for Season 2) and closing music (it's called 'The Fall', and it's by Blake Leyh). Season 1 Main Cast - Dominic West -- Det. Jimmy McNulty John Doman -- Major Bill Rawls Idris Elba -- Stringer Bell Frankie R. Faison -- Deputy Commissioner Ervin Burrell Larry Gilliard, Jr. -- D'Angelo Barksdale Wood Harris -- Avon Barksdale Deirdre Lovejoy -- ASA Rhonda Pearlman Wendell Pierce -- Det. Bunk Moreland Lance Reddick -- Lt. Cedric Daniels Andre Royo -- Bubbles Sonja Sohn -- Det. Kima Greggs You're about to undertake a show that many argue is the Greatest of All-Time. I like The Sopranos a bit better, but this is definitely up high on my list, too. I do think you'll enjoy it. |

Just don't expect it to be 'exciting' early on... it's not, really... totally unlike any other 'cops' story... the plot moves very slowly for awhile... Don't panic if you're not even really digging it for the first few hours. Your patience will be rewarded. Trust me. |

Very much a 'novel for television'. So get down their names, jobs, and relationships with one another... and there's a lot of lingo to learn. Remember the learning curve on the first 5 or 6 episodes of Sons of Anarchy? There's a lot of language here, and they rarely have an audience surrogate there to ask questions so somebody can feed exposition... you just kinda pick it up as you watch... |

Saw the first 2. I'm following along so far but having hell remembering the names. Cracking up because it takes place in 2002 and I forget how far we have come technology wise since then. Crazy. |

I remember being so pleased with S1 that I forget it takes a few episodes to really get into the show. S2 was where I got stuck. People still tell me I need to go back and try again in order to finish the series. |

I saw the first four until HBO OnDemand took it off. I liked it up to that point, but wasn't 'engaged' yet enough to care about anyone. It's a big canvas all at once. |

Gate - You'll meet Omar in #3. You'll like him. Bilki - Yes, definitely. Surprised you got 'stuck' in 2... I was a lot more into it by then (once you know everybody, and then 'surprise, here's a new group of people to meet and learn about'...). It's different, but more accessible, I think, not less... 4 is my favorite. It's incredible. Just a perfect chapter in this story. 5 is problematic for some (with credibility issues), but I liked it very much. The story finishes nicely. |

Saw episode 3 of Season 1 last night. Boy there are a lot of characters. So we found out that Daniels may be a 'dirty cop' at the end of the episode. Didn't see that coming. I'm liking it but I have to pay attention so that means it will be slow going. I kept getting text messages from a friend last night and almost screamed 'Don't you know I'm watching The Wire and I need to pay attention???!!!' but I refrained and answered the text and was a good friend. |

Just always hit pause while texting. Many characters, yes. And as with Game of Thrones, they keep throwing MORE at you... It does get easier, though. |

Right, but that pressures you to respond quickly and/or end the text conversation fast... Still just three in, or did you get further yesterday? |

No, just 3. We had a friend come over last night. Can't watch it during the day because too much commotion. I'm hoping tonight to watch one for sure. I also have to marathon Masters of Sex because it says it's only available until Jan. 7th on DVR. |

Just watched episode 4 & 5 season 1. Met Omar. Fun but for the life of me I'm confused. Lots of characters and sometimes when they say something I don't get it and then I turn to husband and he says 'I didn't get that either'. Dax, you were right. Huge cast. Sometimes confusing. So last night like usual I was being texted during the show. I had husband stop the recording and made the conversation quick. You just can't multitask while watching this show. |

>> sometimes when they say something I don't get it and then I turn to husband and he says 'I didn't get that either'. I'll sometimes have the subtitles on for tough-to-get dialogue... You're around where it should start to get easier, though... after about five hours, you know more names, who they are... |

Subtitles is a great idea. Saw 6 last night. Brutal killing of Omar's boyfriend. I can now see why Omar is going to be a favorite. McNulty is an idiot for bringing his kids with him when he brought Omar to morgue. Like they won't tell mom. Oh boy. So 'mom' is our girlfriend from Rescue Me? I love her. Love Freamon. He seems like one of the only Detectives with a brain. I think that is who I'm talking about. He's the guy that makes wood stuff. |

Yup. Callie Thorne (Sheila on RM, Elena here). Love Lester Freamon (you know Clarke Peters as the head of HR on POI...). |

I knew he looked familiar but a lot of the cast does. I just couldn't place him. Watched Episode 7 last night. Getting easier to follow but still having a tough time remembering names so I have to ask hubby who they are talking about. He's great at names. ;) |

Gate, you and Chris hit pause and never resumed, right? Sigh. It's not an EASY show, but... it is so, so good... I'll get this new book 'one of these days' - https://www.theringer.com/tv/2018/2/6/16952246/the-wire-politics-season-three-clay-davis-carcetti-royce |

Still on my list, back when i could only get S1 for free, so I stopped. I'm guessing I could binge it over the summer with Amazon or Netflix? |

HBO doesn't share their shows with NetFlix. Maybe you'd find it on Amazon? |
