Kevin Rankin (Breaking Bad) and Virginia Kull (The Following) are set to co-star in Fox‘s event series Gracepoint, a U.S. remake of UK’s Broadchurch. The project centers on Detective Emmett Carver (David Tennant), the lead male investigator on the case of a shocking murder of 11-year-old Danny that puts a small town under scrutiny. Rankin will play Paul Coates, Gracepoint’s well-intentioned but inexperienced local minister who becomes the town’s defacto spokesperson in the wake of the tragedy. Kull will play Danny’s mother Beth. Anguished by her loss, Beth is hungry to discover the truth behind her son’s untimely death.

Any news how they will or won't stay true to the source material?

Haven't really seen anything... so far, every casting announcement has described the characters we know (except, hey, Tennant's name is different...).

I would guess that it will be pretty close... near-identical set-up, relationships...

50/50 odds they change the killer's identity. Wouldn't be surprised either way... they do, that's smart and appreciated by those that have already seen Broadchurch (surprise is good)... they don't, I get that, too, since that resolution IS such an important character moment for the female lead...

Yeah, changing the identity of the killer is a pretty big deal. The irony of Ellie Miller's treatment of Susan Wright during her questioning is founded on Joe being the killer. Miller's whole "How could you not know what was happening in your own home" was important, I thought.

And Josh Hamilton - this guy - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0357979/ has been cast as Miller's husband. He's currently Hank on American Horror Story.

Nolte's character seems new and/or expanded from the original show, as the whole part about the boating was very minor. What confuses me is that report said 13 episodes, everywhere else it said 10 (ha). Read over the weekend that DT was going to use Skype for American speech lessons, thank goodness.

Yeah, I take Nolte as a reworking of David Bradley's guy.

>> He runs the kayak rental on the beach as well as the local wildlife observation program, where the murdered boy at the center of the plot was one of his volunteers.

Instead of a news vendor and paperboys...

Interview with John Goldwyn, the US executive producer about Gracepoint aka US Broadchurch. Safe to read for those who are spoiler free unless an actor photo wall is considered a spoiler.

Our eventual Gracepoint thread (shouldn't go up 'til we have, like, a premiere date...) will have to be Broadchurch-spoiler-free, but this topic is all totally spoilery...

I wonder how weird it'll be for Tennant... deja vu... it's similar to, but not quite like how a stage actor will leave a company and join another production of the same show... and it's the same, but not, because scripts will be interpreted differently by different casts... but this ISN'T the same show... except sorta...

Thanks I wasn't sure, so I wanted to be better safe than upset anyone.

Olivia Colman was on Graham Norton Saturday night in the US (earlier in the week in the UK) Idris Elba was also on, which is why I was watching... There was a comment by the host about how Ellie had to be the worst detective ever not knowing it was her husband. The other Broadchurch related comment was how David spoke/spent time with people in the police force.

Good question, as it is similar to what happens on stage. In some ways, it reminds me of when people are in a film version and a stage version of the same story. I do wonder how much the scripts have to be changed due to the differences in American speech and police procedure. That said DT has done a few different things since Broadchurch series one wrapped (the Dr Who 50th and Richard II to name two and I bet he is just going to be so glad to get rid of the hair extensions/plait), so at least it wasn't jumping from one version to the other.

I'm assuming that was being played for laughs. She certainly didn't come off as incompetent during the course of the series. I'm probably just being a little sensitive because I thought she was such a great character.

Yes it was played for laughs, and Lena Dunham was the third guest with Idris and Olivia. What was funny was she wondered how she could be on this show with such actors compared to her. Imagine a traditional late night talk show like the Tonight Show with musical guests and comedians etc...with a host that has more of a personality of an insult comic... Basically a ruder and British version of Jimmy Kimmel...and unlike some other chat shows the guests are interviewed together so they have cross chatter along with the questions.

I haven't seen a lot of Graham Norton, but what I've seen was fun. I do like when the first-guest-sticks-around... most of Johnny Carson's run was like that... Jay USED to, didn't he?... but it's mostly gone away, and I like the idea of going back to it more... Sure, most guests just wanna promote their stuff and not compete/share-the-spotlight with, say, Steve Martin. You always WOULD feel for anybody sitting with Robin Williams...

But it's fun and loose and contributes to a lot of memorable moments.

With Carson though everyone didn't come out at the same time, which is how Graham's show usually works. (That said not every episode is like that back in November for the Who 50th, Graham did a group interview with the other guests first, than Matt and David came out...the other guests didn't leave, but he focused more on them, which reminded me of the Carson format as the others went further down the couch.)

Getting back to Broadchurch, one of the producers tweeted that they won an award at the South Bank Sky Arts Awards today...To see the photos check out his account. https://twitter.com/RichardStokes7 They beat Top of the Lake and "The Fall" (which I've never heard of guess it hasn't made its way to the US.) Here is a news report. http://uk.omg.yahoo.com/news/south-bank-awards-broadchurch-monkeys-152037642.html

The Fall is available here on Netflix (premiered here via them, but for some probably contractual reason, it isn't considered or labeled as a 'Netflix Original Series' as the others have been... kinda weird). First season was just five episodes. Gillian Anderson, cop. Jamie Dornan (hot now because he's in the 50 Shades of Grey film), serial killer. Very disturbing, because you spend a lot of time in the killer's POV, and he's one of those 'nice family guys by day'...

Thanks...that explains it if Netflix buried it.

EW has its first coverage about the US version, with an on set photo of Anna Gunn and DT...(this is in the Veronica Mars cover issue, that due to the weather hasn't shown up in my mail yet.)

"There is no precedent for this." Well, it's RARE, sure, but as a few pointed out in the comments, Mark Strong did two versions of Low Winter Sun.

Not the same character, but I love that Anil Kapoor was a foreign President on 24, and then played the lead role (the 'Jack Bauer') on India's 2013 adaptation of it...

In film, we have Penelope Cruz doing Abre Los Ojos and Vanilla Sky, its American remake... several directors have remade their own film - George Sluizer, The Vanishing; Michael Haneke, Funny Games; Alfred Hitchcock, The Man Who Knew Too Much...

I agree this isn't the first time someone played a role in one production and then played it again in another. This is very common in theatre though not as much in television or movies. :D That being said this is a tad different than Low Winter Sun as there were many years after the original show aired and it was remade on AMC. Broadchurch is easily accessible if someone wants to watch it in the US (it actually won an award for being the best UK show when it came to international sales in 2013). In reality competition shows, this has happened though (someone involved in one version of a show also appearing in another within the same 12 month period) -- for example during the fall, Len and Bruno fly between California and the UK every week so they can judge both Strictly Come Dancing and Dancing with the Stars.

Getting back to Broadchurch, I wonder if where they filmed in the UK was hit severely by the flooding. It was supposed to be awful on some coastal towns...

Reading a live blog of BAFTA for tv. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/film/baftas/10836261/TV-Baftas-2014-live.html There are no videos posted yet...

Broadchurch got 3 out of the 4 awards they were nominated for: best drama, best supporting for David Bradley and Olivia Colman got for lead actress. The only award they didn't win was the audience award which went to the 50th Anniversary episode of Doctor Who.

The promo for season 2 is here... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isToG5_U1Ug&feature=youtu.be (Jan 5) in the UK, no info for US airing yet. There was a mention elsewhere of tie in short stories 8 in total, so most likely 8 episodes.
