HBO renewed Westworld (and comedies Divorce and Insecure, too).

>> Next for HBO are the premieres of limited series The Young Pope and Big Little Lies and comedy Crashing, from Pete Holmes and Judd Apatow as well as the final seasons of Girls and Leftovers. Jon Stewart is in the process of building his animation studio, with his new series eyed for a launch in the first part of 2017.

Did anyone watch HBO's Big Little Lies? What did you all think? I thought the performances were wonderful. I even didn't hate Shailene Woodley. Also loved the soundtrack a lot. Storyline was...pretty good. I think the very final murder thing and how it played out was a bit.....didn't quite make sense. Don't want to spoil it by going into details unless everyone has seen it. Or nobody has/will.

But a good show.

I watched it, and thought Kidman stole the show. I've loved her in past projects but was somewhat apprehensive about her being in this. I was surprised at how invested I became in her character, and pleased that she wasn't portrayed as a frail woman in an abusive relationship. Celeste striking back at her abuser really muddied her perception of the problem. The actress who played the psychiatrist was great, too. I loved the scenes in which she was pushing Celeste towards leaving Perry and Celeste was verbally lashing out at her.

I wasn't familiar with Shailene Woodley and found her acting a bit clunky at first but she grew on me.

It was fun to watch Laura Dern play a more conventional type of character. I know her from David Lynch films and her starring role in HBO's Enlightened, and her character was so cringe-worthy in that show.

The big climax was a little too convenient for my taste. Most women wouldn't be so lucky that their abuser would come to his demise in such a manner.

I did think all of the little side interviews with the other people from the community were unnecessary. Other than to show how nasty and petty some of us can be, it wasn't very thought-provoking that I noticed. I guess it could have been seen as comedy relief.

The book has been sitting in my To Read stack for while. I need to grab it soon.

I always have mixed feelings about Kidman. I think she's a superb actress and always enjoy her performance but there is also always something that holds me back from embracing her. She always reads just a little cold to me--maybe that's it. I also loved Reese Witherspoon's portrayal. Very compelling.

And Laura Dern: cannot say enough about how fabulous her performance was. Spectacular. Also loved Robin Weigert as the therapist. That was chilling. Until the sessions between Kidman and Weigert, it is easy to dismiss or maybe just ignore how serious the violence in Celeste's marriage actually was.

The ending was a bit....pat, I think. It seemed like a bit of a dramatic devise with Bonnie at the very end. She was more or less an outsider. And a weird bonding experience. I was also...puzzled at the lie that is told by the women. It seems to me that it would not have been manslaughter but out and out self defense, as well as an unintentional death--don't understand why they didn't go with that, considering the number of witnesses, with Bonnie being the clincher as the more or less outsider of the group. But maybe Bonnie's actions at the end were supposed to muddy the character a bit--she was so perfect, so chill, so unsullied youth. We get no sense of why she did what she did.

The community members being interviewed acted as a Greek Chorus, I think, but not as fully integrated.

I also cannot say enough about the stunning scenery, homes, etc. Or the music. I am obsessed.

Glad to see your reviews. The mall recorded but we haven't watched any. I think I started to watch one and I was afraid it would be about a bunch of privileged bitches like they haven't Scottsdale Highway and so I didn't keep watching. But you guys seem to like it so maybe I will keep it for when there is Halo in the stuff I want to watch

I think the women are far more wealthy than they are in the book, so it was an interesting choice, I think. Visually, the setting along the coast is stunning.

None of these women are stupid or vapid or vacuous.

Bonnie's backstory must be explored or explained in the book, as I saw people talking about it and how it served as motivation for what she did in the review of the episode at AV Club.

The show was quite visually appealing. Renata's house was awesome!

The cover-up was puzzling. I thought there was an undercurrent of guilt to it, which seemed odd for a story that looked like it was intended to be about empowerment. But I've recently been experiencing how darkness and light go hand in hand in my own life, so perhaps this also pertains to guilt and empowerment. Now I'm going to have to think about this some more, lol.

And those flashes of Perry beating the crap out of Celeste in the finale were so painful to watch.

I haven't started watching Season 2 of Into the Badlands, but they're on the dvr.

Season 1 was only 6, this year it's 10... renewed today for a third season of 16 (which I'm betting they'll probably split into two runs of 8, but maybe without a lot of space between them, like TWD and FearTWD do...).

I can't imagine what's worth watching to put Westworld on the back burner. It was just terrific.

More now, it's kinda that I'm savoring having it on deck... and I know it'll be a long while before Season 2 starts... but yes, I regret not having been in on the discussion while it was 'live'...

I'm wavering on Into the Badlands. They did something that I really hate and it kinda ruins the show for me. I still love The Widow and she's just about the only character I care about after watching 3 episodes of season 2. It will be relegated to eating-my-breakfast background noise if I decide to finish the season.

That'll be awhile yet.

September date (the 10th?) for The Deuce, the new one from David Simon and George Pelecanos.
