So while I'd say the 'summer season' continues through to the conclusion of Low Winter Sun on 10/6, I'd say the 'fall' season starts today, with the BBC America Season 3 premiere of Luther, which will run for the next four nights... it's a show I haven't watched the first two seasons of, but have on dvd... not watching now - think I'll wait 'til over the December lull... I've done a lot of marathoning lately, and even though altogether this is just 14 episodes (6/4/4), I'd rather wait (doing some movies on Netflix now, while things are still kinda light) ... will collect Luther on the dvr, and if I need space, delete, because I could just grab the dvd of 3 later cheaply enough, I think...

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia starts tomorrow, but has moved from FX to spinoff FXX. Okay.

Other early starters... Boardwalk Empire on Sunday (can't wait!)... Sons of Anarchy next Tuesday (excited about this, too)...

9/16 - I'll sample Sleepy Hollow (the night of the Under the Dome and Siberia finales)
9/17 - Brooklyn Nine-Nine... The Mindy Project... will sample Fox's Dads...
9/18 - Survivor (and the Big Brother finale)... Key & Peele...
9/22 - The Emmys... Dexter series finale... Ray Donovan finale... Copper finale... penultimate episode of Breaking Bad...
9/23 - Will sample 'Mom' on CBS... will sample Hostages on CBS... will sample The Blacklist on NBC...
9/24 - Marvel's Agents of SHIELD... Person of Interest... will sample Trophy Wife on ABC...
9/25 - South Park... Nashville... Modern Family... Broadchurch finale...
9/26 (my birthday) - Glee... Grey's Anatomy... Parks & Recreation... The Michael J. Fox Show... Parenthood... will sample The Crazy Ones on CBS...
9/28 - SNL
9/29... BREAKING BAD SERIES FINALE... Premieres of The Good Wife, Homeland, Masters of Sex, Hello Ladies, Once Upon A Time, Revenge, the animated shows on Fox...
10/2 - The Bridge finale
10/3 - Scandal... will sample The Millers on CBS...
10/5 - Hell on Wheels finale
10/6 - Low Winter Sun (2 episode) finale
10/9 - American Horror Story: Coven
10/10 - Once Upon A Time in Wonderland
10/13 - The Walking Dead
10/16 - Pixar's first-ever holiday television special, Toy Story of Terror
10/17 - White Collar
10/18 - The Birthday Boys (sketch show on IFC, produced by Bob Odenkirk)
11/4 - will sample Almost Human on Fox
11/8 - Raising Hope
12/1 - Treme... Ripper Street...
12/4 - Mob City on TNT. Terrible title (it has gone through a couple others), but this is the long-anticipated follow-up from Frank Darabont, after he was ousted from The Walking Dead...)

We watch so little, 4 shows a week is about it. Watching BB of course. Low Winter Sun is OK, Dome is OK, Hell on Wheels OK. That is it. Will watch SOA when it returns, Good Wife, POI, can't even think of what else. I'll watch Walking Dead and AHS, hsb won't. No sitcoms, we both don't like them, no reality. That leaves out a lot.

Should say watch Colbert and Daily, which I think are comedy, but also news. I will NOT watch anything with a laugh track, makes me furious and I hate it. Live audience is OK.

It's been a long time since I've watched a multi-camera/studio audience sitcom (the one season of Kelsey Grammer's 'Back To You', 07-08 ... the Amy Sherman-Palladino 'Return of Jezebel James' in 08, but that only lasted three episodes...), but I'll be sampling a few of them this year. Doubt I'll stick with them, though...

I'm gonna check out Marvel's Agents of the SHIELD, mostly because Alan Sepinwall has been talking it up. Of course, I'll watch SURVIVOR. I may get a little bored after Breaking Bad, The Bridge and Broadchurch come to an end, though.

Trophy Wife (ABC) - Premieres 9/24, but previewing online for a week or so.
-
Malin Akerman -- Kate
Bradley Whitford -- Pete
Michaela Watkins -- Jackie
Natalie Morales -- Meg
Ryan Lee -- Warren
Gianna LePera -- Hillary (in pilot; from #2-on, it's Bailee Madison)
Albert Tsai -- Bert
and Marcia Gay Harden -- Diane

I've loved really-pretty-and-funny Akerman since Lisa Kudrow's HBO show, The Comeback, and she was one of the only things I liked about the film made from one of my favorite graphic novels, Watchmen...

Love Bradley Whitford. He's always funny to me.

I liked Michaela Watkins on SNL. Marcia Gay Harden is always good. The girl playing the daughter in the pilot wasn't bad, but she's replaced by Bailee Madison, who is really good as the Young Snow in flashbacks on Once Upon A Time...

Akerman is the third wife to Whitford, who has two kids from one ex-wife and another from his second. Dysfunctional 'big family' stuff happens. Pilot has some funny stuff in it.

Co-creator Sarah Haskins is basing this on her own life, she's the third wife of Blake Edwards' son (actress Denise Crosby was Wife #2). Co-creator Emily Halpern worked on Private Practice and The Unit. Executive producers are Lee Eisenberg & Gene Stupnitsky, who worked on the US Office for a long time (and are now also working with original Office co-creator Stephen Merchant on his new HBO series, Hello Ladies).

What happened to Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? It was on at 12:30 here, and I'd put it on sometimes at lunch couple times a week if the news was too repetitive or depressing (Zimmerman, Syria etc). It just seems to be gone.

OK, I'll have to check out Sleepy Hollow just to see if it's as crazy as Sepinwall claims.

They must have moved it once Cedric, The Entertainer started as the host. In my area, it moved to another station/time so it is possible the same happened to you.

Derek (Netflix)
-
Ricky Gervais -- Derek Noakes
Kerry Godliman -- Hannah
Karl Pilkington -- Dougie
David Earl -- Kev Twine
Brett Goldstein -- Tom
Ruth Bratt -- Mary

I'm a big fan of Gervais. I've liked everything (The Office, Extras, The Ricky Gervais Show, An Idiot Abroad, Life's Too Short, his stand-up, his talk show appearances, his outings hosting the Golden Globes; I haven't gotten around to seeing the film Cemetery Junction (2010), or some of the others that he's acted in-but-didn't-write-and-direct, but I'm thrilled that he's in the next Muppets movie, I'll see THAT right away...).

If you like Gervais, I think you'll like this, but it probably isn't for people that hate him. But it IS a very different work from any of the others, and the pilot (which preceded the next six episodes in the UK by nine months) baffled critics (and maybe a few fans) when it aired... so much of Ricky's work has been ripe with cynicism and had mean-spirited asshole dolts for lead characters, that... people didn't trust this for what it is. It's a fake documentary about the workers of a senior care facility, but it's not making fun of anybody. The premise of this is that the most important quality in a person is to be kind, not clever or good-looking. Kindness is magic.

I like that. I appreciate that he's doing something else. Derek seems 'simple', and he likely is, but Ricky denies that Derek is mentally handicapped... he's definitely NOT mocking those that are, here, I trust that... the point of view of this is nice and sincere.

The pilot was a good mix of funny and sad, and I'm glad I don't have to wait nine months to watch the second episode.

It's also fun to see Karl 'acting' (though, you know, in a very Karl-like role), and while An Idiot Abroad is done, I was pleased to see that they're doing 'The Moaning of Life', another Karl-examines-other-cultures travelogue, but this time Karl gets a choice in where and what he does...

This is Ricky's first major tv work without usual co-collaborator Stephen Merchant; I'm looking forward to Merchant's first big project without Ricky, Hello Ladies, premiering in a couple weeks on HBO.

I am going to check out Sleepy Hollow as well. What about the Agents of Shield or whatever, is the cartoony or serious?

I'll watch the first of Sleepy Hollow, but that's probably all...

SHIELD will have humor and takes place in Marvel's 'Cinematic Universe' (The Avengers), but won't have a 'cartoony' tone, no. Action-adventure stuff.

Sleepy Hollow was fun. Enjoyed the two leads. And, there's something captivating about witches, a Headless Horseman and the forces of evil. I'm definitely in for another.

Sleepy Hollow (Fox)
-
Tom Mison -- Ichabod Crane
Nicole Beharie -- Abbie Mills
Orlando Jones -- Frank Irving
Katia Winter -- Katrina Crane

Crane's wife was Nadia on the seventh season of Dexter...

Yeah, this is a batshit crazy show. I didn't hate it, but I didn't like it very much, either. Pretty goofy premise. The lie detector scene was funny... I really liked the (reverend) victim's POV shot, with the camera going to the ground on its side - that looked cool... it's fun to see a Headless Horseman running around, sure... but...

The story didn't hook me. It's cute that they included a prophecy of a seven-year partnership between Crane and Mills as 'Witnesses', but... I don't think they're gonna get very far.

Showtime's Masters of Sex pilot is online now for free sampling (and unedited, unlike the Ray Donovan pilot a few months ago). I haven't watched it yet (might wait 'til after the official premiere on 9/29, might not... other stuff to watch piling up first...). But here's a helpful list of where all the sex scenes in the hour are - http://www.theatlanticwire.com/entertainment/2013/09/all-sex-masters-sex-pilot/69501/

Dads (Fox)
-
Giovanni Ribisi -- Warner
Seth Green -- Eli
Brenda Song -- Veronica
Vanessa Lachey -- Camilla
Tonita Castro -- Edna
with Peter Riegert -- David
and Martin Mull -- Crawford

Sitcom about two video game designer guys whose senior fathers move in with them.

I like Ribisi, Green, Mull, and Family Guy (which creators Alec Sulkin & Wellesley Wild have done a lot of writing for). But there were very few laughs in this, and I won't be watching it again. Brenda Song IS gorgeous, though. I didn't recognize Riegert from Sopranos (he was Zellman), but did know that he was a judge on The Good Wife...

Good 'F' grade review by Todd VanDerWerff, who saw twice as many episodes as I'm going to... http://www.avclub.com/articles/dads,102864/

Terry Crews -- Sgt. Terry Jeffords
Melissa Fumero -- Det. Amy Santiago
Joe Lo Truglio -- Det. Charles Boyle

Oh, I liked this one... several big laughs. Lots of potential. I will be watching this. Ensemble cop comedy from Michael Schur & Dan Goor (Parks & Recreation).

What a big change for Andre Braugher, going from the killer admiral of the sub to the gay cop!! I'm not real big on comedies, but it was worth a few good laughs.

Sleepy. Gotta finish a Hell on Wheels I'm in the middle of later... wanna watch the Ray Donovan season finale and the Copper series finale... two behind now on Low Winter Sun, but I kinda wanna watch last night's premieres first - Mom and Hostages on CBS and The Blacklist on NBC...

Anxious for Marvel's Agents of SHIELD tonight, but probably won't watch it 'til tomorrow (ABC locally broadcasts 4:3, gotta pay for HD if I want 16:9, so I'd rather watch it on hulu a day later...)

Do you watch hulu on your set or you computer.

I bought an 'internet ready' HDTV last year and still haven't hooked it up properly. :-(

Hulu on the computer (my set isn't that smart, but the eventual replacement one will be), but Netflix on the tv through the blu-ray (I couldn't update my computer OS without much frustration, so I said 'fuck it'... but I can and do watch on a super-cool big monitor on a computer at Job #2).

Hostages (CBS)
-
Toni Collette -- Dr. Ellen Sanders
Tate Donovan -- Brian Sanders
Rhys Coiro -- Kramer
Sandrine Holt -- Sandrine
Billy Brown -- Archer
Quinn Shephard -- Morgan Sanders
Mateus Ward -- Jake Sanders
James Naughton -- President Kincaid
and Dylan McDermott -- Duncan Carlisle

Funny, the first shot of McDermott, he's in a mask and leather jacket, which recalls American Horror Story's first season....

Another show based on an Israeli series.

Collette is a doctor that's going to be performing an important surgery on the President tomorrow. Four people break in to her home and hold her family hostage. The team is led by McDermott, who is an FBI agent specializing in ENDING hostage situations... we're not given his or the others' motivation (but it's easy to conclude that they themselves have loved ones similarly being leveraged), but their stated objective is the death of the President during this surgery. The family all has their own issues (Dad's unfaithful and his business is failing, Daughter is pregnant, Son owes money to a dangerous drug dealer).

Premise sounds fine for a suspenseful movie, but it's easy to wonder how they'll possibly string this out over 15 episodes (ala Fox's The Following last season)... the answer comes in the last few minutes, when
Spoiler: click to toggle

I don't know. It wasn't bad, but I'm not sure it's good enough to warrant the time investment...

I like Collette and McDermott... just saw Sandrine Holt in House of Cards... Tate Donovan from Damages... Rhys Coiro from Entourage...

I wasn't 'hooked', but I am 'curious', maybe...

I adore Toni Collette and even so I was underwhelmed. It already feels stretched out. Unless there is some big twist that resets and flips the scenario I can't see keeping it so that we can wonder each week what new gimmick will keep the hostage situation going.

What, the eventual 'the bad guys are victims, too' reveal wouldn't be enough of a twist for you? (Yeah, it kinda bugs me that they'd think the audience wouldn't, like, assume that right away... no need to save it for later, be right out front with it...)

But I hear you're thumbs up on SHIELD...

Mom (CBS)
-
Anna Faris -- Christy
Allison Janney -- Bonnie
Sadie Calvano -- Violet
Nate Corddry -- Gabriel
Matt Jones -- Baxter
French Stewart -- Chef Rudy
Spencer Daniels -- Luke
Blake Garrett Rosenthal -- Roscoe

Shitty sitcom co-created by Chuck Lorre. Faris is cute. I love Allison Janney. Funny that Breaking Bad's Badger is playing a character named Baxter. I like Corddry, and French Stewart...

Alcoholism, neglectful parenting, marital infidelity, and teen pregnancy are riotous subjects, you see.

I agree with the thoughts on Hostages. I also thought of AHS with McDermott in his gear :)

Also, BIG agree with how is this a series? ITA maybe movie, or mini series. How could this go on and on? I doubt we keep it as we usually get down to 4 shows a week, maybe 5 at most.

We will have POI, Good Wife, Revenge (hate to say it)....SOA will be done, need one or two more maybe. Sleepy Hollow will not be it for sure.
