This airs tomorrow and got a great write up from NY Times. Jennifer Beals as the first woman police super. Haven't seen her in a lonnng time. They say it is really filmed there, unlike Good Wife which is NY with Chi-town dubbed on (as was ER). Sounds promising, I am taping for sure. |

>> which is NY with Chi-town dubbed on (as was ER) Well, ER was mostly shot on the Warners lot in LA, but they did go to Chicago a couple times a season. The Chicago Code is going to be really good. (I've seen some muted-in-praise reviews, but I'm hoping/expecting to be more in line with the raves... expectations are high, so it's possible I'll be a LITTLE disappointed, but...). Shawn Ryan has totally earned my trust. Beals has been good in her recurring role as Tim Roth's ex-wife on Lie To Me (for which Ryan was the showrunner for Season 2...). |

Right as usual Dax, I more or less meant they were not really filmed there. Yeah, I have big hopes for this one. I personally have not seen Beals since Flashdance. |

OK, just watched it. Off to a good start, though I don't see this guy promoting her if he thought she's go up against him. The Chicago scenes were abundant and great. The right neighborhoods were deemed as the gun battle zones. Best line of the night upon finding the joggers, TBD "they be dead". |

She had a line or two about that. He (Gibbons) didn't expect her to be an opponent, he thought she'd be a good puppet. Oops, his mistake... |

hmmmm. Maybe I expected too much/something different. They did a nice job setting up the characters and conflicts, but I didn't like the voiceover intros, or the pacing. And too much of it seemed too "pat." Much more formulaic than I thought it'd be. I hope TM hasn't sold out.... nah. I'll stick it out and expect the characters will grow on me.... |

I liked it better than either of you, but it didn't blow me away... I think Sepinwall said he preferred TCC's pilot to that of The Shield... nope. It's not THAT good... But it's good. I'm not at all thinking that it's going to be a sell-out for Minear. I do hope the voiceovers were a pilot-only thing, rather than part of the show's DNA like on Desperate Housewives or Grey's (HATE them...). I did like the quick mini-flashbacks, and then the surprise of Teresa's driver's voiceover getting interrupted with his death... |

Dax, why do you hate voice overs? I'll try the pilot. I like JB a lot. She's got a great presence on screen, if I make myself clear. |

Not all of them. Sometimes they work. Dexter's don't bother me, or Ron Howard's on Arrested Development... Tom Cruise at the top of Risky Business, or Kevin Spacey in American Beauty... Meredith's are often poorly written, and the editing of them is usually agonizing... she'll say a fragment of a sentence... we'll watch a 30-40 second scene... they'll pick her back up mid-sentence - wait, what the hell was she saying?... Similarly, Mary Alice says a lot of stupid things trying to foreshadow/summarize whatever a given episode's themes are. It bothers me. I have liked when they've altered the format (Rex narrated a DH, other Grey's characters occasionally get a shot), but I'd be fine if they disappeared altogether... it's a lazy device, most of the time... See Robert McKee's argument on voiceovers (a real guy, but hilariously quoted and parodied in Spike Jonze's film, Adaptation). |

Just watched the second and I'd say it is on par with Blue Bloods, kind of eh. I'll probably keep watching as I dropped Harry's Law.. Southland is light years better and no one watches it. JB seems kind of woody to me. |

Dax thanks. I was just curious. I think I like voiceovers in general, but sometimes I don't. I loved them in the first season of DH, so did my hubby. Now, I don't care about them anymore and the show :( On the topic, I liked the pilot, I don't like you all for making me watch it! I really like the main three characters. Don't remember the names yet, except for Teresa. I don't liek the scheming there, but I guess it's a part of the premise so I cannot fight it too much. In this case, I'd prefer the show without the voiceover. As for the driver, I didn't expect him to die even after readign your comments. I don't know why but I though that a TAXI driver was going to get shot, so I was caught off guard with the whole shooting scene at the end. How did the main cop know that Laim / William is the undercover cop? I must have missed it. |

>> How did the main cop know that Liam / William is the undercover cop? I must have missed it. Yeah, that was unclear. I couldn't tell what tipped him off, either. 'Amazing intuition'? Or he saw something that looked like 'training' he was familiar with?... Don't know. |

Sup. Colvin (Beals) told Jarek outright in E1. Young 'tec Caleb (the new partner for Jarek) thought something was "off' and noticed "high level" skillz with the undercover dude and Jarek confirmed in order to make sure Caleb didn't pursue the matter and blow the cover. As Krystal said, the show still finding its legs. I'm not buying Beals as the Supt. The plot wasn't all that sensible either. I never saw the Shield, but so far this isn't making me forget good old Hill Street Blues. There are some flashes of great scenes, mired in too much mud. |

I am not buying her so far either. There are a lot of black females that already play cops on TV that would have been better, but of course they are not as pretty. They'll have to widen the ensemble. So far the alderman is so cartoony he just needs a mustache to twirl. The 2 cops are pretty good, but they are about it. It's like Blue Bloods, the only one I find interesting is the detective son, the rest of them are a snooze. Shield was outstanding. |

Just watched #2 (the dvr is mad at me, there's a lot to catch up on...). I'm still pretty happy with this, finding it far superior to Blue Bloods so far (but much of that is probably in my preference to serial storytelling vs. stand-alone stuff). Obviously nobody in the cast like The Shield's strike team, but Vonda and Isaac's scenes are evoking Danny Sofer and Julian for me, a little (except for the part where they're a couple, of course...). |

I don't liek the politics and them trying to bring down the sleazebag, but I like the three main characters, the good ones, of course :) I hate how Gibbons is like five steps ahead, I'm glad that this time they know. |

I'm opposite of Dax - thought #3 was so weak I'm ready to drop it. (I'm never big on cop shows anyway since Hill Street Blues.) The only reason I'm hanging on is the Minear name. I do need to drop some shows. I just don't have the time any more... |

So it looks like the voiceovers stay. I usually like them, but not here. I'm slightly losing interest in this show :( |

I usually dislike voiceovers (as we've discussed), but they're a little better here for me (because of the variety of perspectives, and as a way for background info to get delivered to us). I didn't like the fourth episode as well as the one before it (though it was Minear's first script co-credit), but I like the show. |

I agree Shelle...losing interest fast. I FF'ed a couple times, and that's a slippery slope. Part of the problem is that I just don't actually like anyone. i need a "viewpoint character." I think it's supposed to be Jarik's partner (see, i keep forgetting his name) and He doesn't do it for me. |

Sadly, I don't like it much at all. It is even duller than Blue Bloods, which I thought was impossible. |

I like Blue Bloods, or I like Danny, to put it correctly :) What I don't like there is the agenda or how to say it, the speeches how they will fight the evil and so on. It's too much for me. |

I also like Danny and he is the only reason I watch. Selleck just comes off as woody, I don't like the daughter and for some reason really dislike her kid. Yes, they do seem too moralistic/preachy or whatever. |
