I love this show.

Only four per week this time, starting Monday 10/25 (Sunil / Frances) and Tuesday 10/26 (Jesse / Adele), two shows a night. Still haven't seen an answer as to how many weeks/total episodes we can expect this time around. There were 43 shows in Season 1 airing over 8 weeks and 3 days, and 35 in Season 2 airing over 7 weeks. The latest press release shows that it's at least four weeks long... thefutoncritic is projecting six, but he might just be guessing...

EMMY(R)- AND PEABODY-WINNING HBO DRAMA SERIES IN TREATMENT KICKS OFF THIRD SEASON OCT. 25, DEBUTING EPISODES MONDAY AND TUESDAY; GOLDEN GLOBE WINNER GABRIEL BYRNE RETURNS, JOINED BY NEW CAST MEMBERS DANE DEHAAN, IRRFAN KHAN, AMY RYAN AND DEBRA WINGER

As Dr. Paul Weston continues to struggle with the aftermath of his divorce, he faces new emotional and physical challenges - including hand tremors that he fears might be the onset of Parkinson's Disease, which killed his father. Meanwhile, he takes on three challenging new patients and turns to a new therapist of his own.

HBO's Emmy(R)- and Peabody Award-winning half-hour drama series IN TREATMENT kicks off its third season this October, with two new half-hour episodes debuting back-to-back on MONDAY, OCT. 25 (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT), and two more new half-hour episodes debuting back-to-back on TUESDAY, OCT. 26 (9:00-10:00 p.m.), followed by other new episodes debuting at the same time on subsequent Mondays and Tuesdays. Gabriel Byrne (Emmy(R) nominee and Golden Globe winner for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Drama) returns as Dr. Paul Weston, joined by new cast members Dane DeHaan (Obie winner for "The Aliens"), Irrfan Khan ("Slumdog Millionaire"), Amy Ryan (HBO's "The Wire"; Oscar(R) nominee for "Gone Baby Gone") and Debra Winger (Oscar(R) nominee for "An Officer and a Gentleman," "Shadowlands" and "Terms of Endearment").

In the third season of IN TREATMENT, Dr. Paul Weston (Gabriel Byrne) continues his therapy practice out of the living room of his Brooklyn brownstone. Among his patients are: Frances (Debra Winger) an aging stage and screen star who has been "blanking out" during rehearsals for a major Broadway role; Sunil (Irrfan Khan), a recent widower and new immigrant from Calcutta, now living with his son's family in Brooklyn and struggling with life in America; and Jesse (Dane DeHaan), a gay, adopted 16-year-old who was recently contacted by his birth mother. Each Friday, Paul visits Adele (Amy Ryan), his new therapist.

Executive producers Anya Epstein (HBO's "Tell Me You Love Me") and Dan Futterman (Oscar(R)-nominee for "Capote") conceived entirely original and uniquely American storylines for the third season, a first for the series. The previous two seasons of IN TREATMENT were adapted from the scripts for the Israeli version of the show that inspired the HBO series.

The second season of IN TREATMENT inspired resounding critical praise, with the New York Times hailing the show for "powerful acting and well-wrought dialogue," while the Los Angeles Times said the "well-drawn and compelling performances are uniformly terrific." The Chicago Sun-Times called the series "fascinating" and Newsday termed it a "fine and absorbing show."

Earlier this year, IN TREATMENT received a Peabody Award. In addition to a Golden Globe for Gabriel Byrne, the first season of the show received two Emmys(R), for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series (Dianne Wiest) and Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series (Glynn Turman).

The executive producers of IN TREATMENT are Stephen Levinson, Mark Wahlberg, Anya Epstein, Dan Futterman, Paris Barclay and Hagai Levi; consulting producer, Eric Overmyer; co-executive producer, Noa Tishby; supervising producer, Sarah Treem; producers, Sarah Lum and Mark Baker.

Further on the set-ups for each character...

Accompanied by his son Arun (Samrat Chakrabarti) and daughter-in-law Julia (Sonya Walger), Sunil (Irrfan Khan), a retired math professor and recent immigrant from Calcutta, reluctantly visits Paul (Gabriel Byrne). He is pushed to discuss the death of his wife six months earlier, his subsequent displacement to the U.S., and the tensions he's experienced living with his son's family, particularly his attractive yet unwelcoming daughter-in-law.

Frances (Debra Winger), a well-known stage and screen actress whose sister was treated by Paul 18 years earlier, begins therapy to discover why she is "blanking out" during rehearsals for a major Broadway revival. Paul forces her to confront the fact that her sister now has terminal breast cancer - and the implications this might have for her own health.

Jesse (Dane DeHaan), a gay 16-year-old high-school student, has been seeing Paul after being caught peddling prescription drugs to classmates. He talks about his troubling "pattern of promiscuity," his unsettled family life with his adoptive parents, and a recent alarming voicemail.

In order to get a new prescription for sleeping pills, an exhausted Paul visits Adele (Amy Ryan) and is surprised by her youth and coolly incisive intelligence. She compels Paul to confront deep-rooted fears about his health, divorce, patients and all-encompassing relationship with former therapist Gina Toll.

Love Amy Ryan (we'll see her back on The Office sometime this year), I think she'll be great here... fun surprise to see Sonya Walger listed as Sunil's daughter-in-law, I hadn't read that anywhere else before, I don't think... I hope we continue to see Michelle Forbes a little bit, and Paul's children (actors Mae Whitman and Max Burkholder are both on NBC's Parenthood, there cousins instead of siblings...). Though I think it's good that Paul will be seeing a new therapist, I will hope for a reunion with Gina somewhere in the season, somehow.

Just watched the first 3 episodes of season 3. This show NEVER disappoints. I just wish Paul was my shrink.

I am starting to bum out that it's not on 5 episodes a week. I just don't understand why this show is always in danger of not being renewed. It's by far one of the best shows ever but I guess it's not for everyone. My husband watched the first week of season 1 and didn't care for it. His loss!

Besides Paul, the only actor in all three seasons is Mae Whitman (Rosie). I had hoped we'd see Kate (Forbes) or Gina (Wiest) at some point in 3, somehow. The Max recast looked alright, but is noticeably older. Guess he was in too many episodes for Burkholder to have worked around Parenthood shooting.

The only director to work on all three seasons is Paris Barclay. He did 12 in 1, 11 in 2, and 12 in 3. 35 out of 106 total episodes. He's going to be the 'resident director' for Sons of Anarchy's fourth season. He's been working a lot on Glee this year, I think (at least a couple episodes).

The only writer to work on all three seasons is Sarah Treem. She wrote the scripts for Paul's sessions with Mia the gymnast, April the cancer patient, and Jesse the gay adopted kid.

--

The Sunil sessions were my favorite of Season 3 (Khan was GREAT, just mesmerizing to watch, like Mahoney in Season 2), followed by Paul's with Adele. Jesse's were good (DeHaan will recur on True Blood next season)... I didn't care for much of Frances' story. There were good moments, but these could be a bit boring in comparison to the others.

Hey, did you recognize...? Marisa, Jesse's Mom (Dendrie Taylor), was Luann on Sons of Anarchy (I knew she was familiar, but didn't know 'til I looked her up...). Knew Jesse's Dad immediately, though... Joseph Siravo was Johnny Boy (Tony's Dad in flashbacks) on The Sopranos, and one of GL's stupid recurring mobsters...

I love Amy Ryan.

In a Bryan Cranston-free year, I definitely wouldn't mind Byrne getting an Emmy for his outstanding work here (but then, there's also Jon Hamm...).

I'd love for there to be a Season 4 (even if they took a very long break... I wouldn't mind if they took 2 or 3 years off, and THEN came back...), but I won't hold my breath. I think this was probably it.

Paul's so fucked up.

I don't believe he'll quit seeing patients, though.

I just love this show. I'll be sad if it doesn't come back but not surprised. I have to laugh because Howard Stern also loves this show and he seems to gobble them up like I do in succession. I ended up watching each week OnDemand as they aired.

I can't believe how messed up Paul is. I hope he doesn't stop practicing but I'm thinking that a break from his practice may be what he needs. Dax like you I would be OK if they went away for a couple of years and came back as long as the show comes back sometime in the future.

I loved all the stories but for different reasons. Jesse's story hit home being that he was a really messed up teenage kid and I'm living with one. I ended up studying Paul's style to see how he talked to the kid. Frances' story kept me intrigued because of Debra Winger. I kept see a transformation of Debra Winger through the season and I couldn't decided if it was her character or she was getting work done but she looked 'better' by the end. The funny thing with her is I wouldn't have recognized her from her early work in 'Officer and a Gentleman' if I didn't know it was her. Sunil was just brilliant. I almost got a 'Primal Fear' feeling at the end when Paul was visiting Sunil in prison and realized he had been duped. Adele and Paul were just weird. Both of them seemed to be playing a game. I thought it was well done but I wanted more from that storyline. I want to know what is going to happen to them. I also this Adele messed with Paul's head big time.

I just want more.

I like that we know very little about Adele, and what's going on in her head and life...

And her pinpointing of HOW dysfunctional the Gina/Paul relationship so-many-roles game was... I'd always love how calm and wonderful we'd see Paul as a therapist, and then, with Adele (or Gina before), he's SUCH an asshole, worse than the worst of his own patients sometimes...

No more coming.

Oh, well. I'll buy the dvds and re-watch 'someday'. Any fan of Byrne or Wiest needs to watch this, or anybody who is a big fan of any of the patients - they should at least watch their favorite's storyline... I was super-impressed with people I already liked (Forbes, Underwood, Charles, Mahoney, Davis, Ryan), and grateful to have been introduced in such a great way to several I'm sure will have marvelous careers from here on out - Wasikowska is something of a movie star now, and Alison Pill deserves to be... Dane DeHaan will be on True Blood this summer...

Ooh, or maybe it isn't entirely DEAD dead...

More would make me happy, even if it's delivered differently.
