As the World Turns Says Goodbye to Helen Wagner

Michael Logan
Jul 22, 2010 11:17 AM ET

As the World Turns will end its phenomenal 54-year run September 17 with lots of fan-pleasing closure - romances, reunions, weddings - but first the show must deal with the death last spring of actress Helen Wagner. Her salt-o-the-earth character, Nancy Hughes, famously uttered ATWT's very first line ("Good morning, dear") back on April 2, 1956 and exec producer Chris Goutman wanted her to repeat it at the end of the final episode for the ultimate in TV cool. "Helen's death was a great loss, made even greater by the fact that she didn't make it to the end," says Goutman, who will have Nancy quietly pass away August 30. The soap will then pay tribute to both actress and character with a full farewell episode August 31.

"I actually considered pre-taping that final scene with Nancy just to be safe but I thought that would be bad karma," reveals Goutman. "Then Helen died and we weren't able to do what we had planned, and that just added more emotional burden to what we were already feeling. But my God, she was 91 years old! What a terrific run! What a terrific lady! Helen was in failing health the last couple of years and it was hard to bring her onto the show successfully, but we did what we could. I wish we could have done more, but it was so difficult for her. Even under those conditions, she was a magnificent force."

Nancy's demise will come at a big time for the Hughes clan, just as Casey (Billy Magnussen) and Alison (Marnie Schulenburg) are about to announce their engagement (they want Nancy to be the first to know) and Chris (Daniel Cosgrove) is getting ready to tell his loved ones that he's suffering from a potentially lethal heart condition. Nancy's son Bob [Don Hastings] will go to her apartment to pick her up for the family gathering, and then must deliver the sad news that she has died. "Life and love and death and imminent loss will all be colliding at once but that's always been our town," says Goutman. "It's the kind of storytelling ATWT does best."

Don't expect the usual church memorial. "We decided not to go the traditional route in paying tribute to Nancy because she made it clear she didn't want anything fancy done," Goutman notes. "Instead, we pick up right after the ceremony with all the characters feeling like they need to do more for her. Casey takes the lead and challenges everyone to come up with a special way to honor Nancy, and that becomes our farewell episode."

Daily Talk Show To Replace 'As The World Turns' On CBS This Fall

EXCLUSIVE: I hear CBS has picked the replacement for departing daytime soap As the World Turns: a daily panel talk show hosted by Sara Gilbert, on whose idea the show is based, Julie Chen (who's married to CBS Corp chief Les Moonves), Holly Robinson Peete, Sharon Osbourne and Leah Remini that focuses on topical events through the eyes of moms. That's why it's casually referred to as "The Mom Show". The pilot, executive produced by Tom Forman (Extreme Makeover: Home Edition), John Redmann (The Tyra Banks Show) and Gilbert, was one of several CBS ordered for the ATWT timeslot, along with a Pyramid reboot hosted by Andy Richter and a cooking game show starring Emeril Lagasse. But I hear the View-type female-oriented talk show screened very well at the network and had been the clear frontrunner. I hear eyes a tentative October launch, a pretty ambitious plan for mounting a new daily show with only 8 weeks of prep time. ATWT is slated to bow out in September after a 54-year run. The talk show will be filmed in Los Angeles where Chen also co-hosts CBS' Early Show year-round as well as the network's reality series Big Brother in the summer.

As The World Turns Replaced By Chat Show Featuring Julie Chen
By BRIAN STELTER

CBS has ordered a daily daytime talk show that will replace the soap opera "As The World Turns" in the fall.

The concept is being called a variation of ABC's popular talk show "The View," but with five moms meeting around the table. The show's roundtable will include five moms, including Julie Chen, the wife of the CBS Corporation chief executive Leslie Moonves.

The other hosts are Sara Gilbert, Sharon Osbourne, Holly Robinson Peete, Leah Remini, and Marissa Jaret Winokur. Ms. Gilbert developed the format for the show, and will executive-produce as well as co-host it.

New York magazine reported Wednesday that Ms. Chen will give up her daily co-hosting job on CBS's "The Early Show," but "may maintain a presence" in some way. Ms. Chen is also the host of the CBS summer reality show "Big Brother."

CBS announced the end of "As The World Turns" earlier this year. It considered a number of formats in its place, including a game show and a cooking show.

The network says the untitled talk show will look at "topical events and contemporary issues through the eyes of parents."

It just sic knee to so much mother love for Lilly , Just what she would do if she hated Lilly.

How Lucinda can mess up Lilly life. When did she decided she love Holden I remember how much she hated Holden.
Now she wants Holden and Lilly together. It seems what ever Lilly wants her mother wants something different.

For education people how do you buy property without getting information from the Town records.
To take someone words that there is a warehouse without checking first is really dumb.
Lucinda so busy tying to get back at Craig that she hasn't stop to think how much this is going to hurt Lilly. I really don't like or care about Lilly I just think it sad how Lucinda treats Lilly. If I remember correctly Lilly is not Luciinda's ughter she adopted her from a relative .It fact Lilly mother was in a story .

Lily mother is Iva. The adopted sister of Holden. Her bio dad is Josh Snyder Strickland, another adopted Snyder cousin and ex husband to Meg.

I hope Iva makes an appearance before the end. Her portray or Lisa Brown reprised her GL role of Nola in that finale.

Jbrr--thanks for sharing the articles........I hadn't seen them yet. The "death of Nancy" episode sounds sad. And what is this about Chris having a lethal heart condition. GMAB! The only thing worse is Casey and Allison getting engaged yet again. Blech.

I won't be watching the talk show that replaces ATWT. Yeah, that's just what we need. Another talk shows with a bunch of cackling hens talking all over each other. :blah:

Semi-enjoyed watching James in a clown suit taunting Babs yesterday. Unsatisfying - I need James alive again...

Iris has Barbara - gasp - well, I think we'd all figured out that out a long time ago, right? That day a few weeks ago with Babs laying out all of the possibilities of her kidnapping - Vienna, Emily, Katie - was really tedious... I was waiting for the 'Nancy did it' scenario...

Seven weeks and two days left. Getting close...

Really not sure what prevented Barbara from overpowering Iris and freeing herself today... sure, she might be a little weak and malnourished, but Iris was vulnerable a multitude of times during their scenes...

I'm two days behind but seeing the preview of James in the clown suit made me laugh. Can't wait!

Love any scene with Henry discussing Babs and Paul getting skeeved out. Those two are hysterical. I'm going to miss Trent Dawson so much. What a gem!

I will not watch the new talk show either. Just like I have never and will never watch Let's Make a Deal (which replaced GL)

I wish we could get James back alive for the end. I wish Casey and Alison would just be gone. I don't want time wasted on them. It also seams pointless to make Chris ill. Just let he and Katie be happy.

Thanks for the articles. I agree: the episode with Nancy sounds like a tough one. The end of this show will be tough!

And CBS, I really couldn't care less about a show with a panel of moms. BLAH! I'm a mom and a teacher, and I still don't want to watch that. I watch daytime TV to ESCAPE from reality.

Chris being sick (like Philip Spaulding was sick) is stupid.

I love Katie in her bra.

Really hate the Barbara kidnapping story. It's all so, SO stupid...

Chris being sick annoys me so frickin' bad. WHY??? Does Katie need to lose yet another man? Are they really killing him off, does anyone know? Ugh. Hate it.

I agree with you about Barbara's kidnapping story. Ridiculous. And I am sick to death of that damn clown!!! :club:

Luke and Reid are the only thing making me hang in there for this last month. And they're barely on as it is!

I DO love anything with Craig. It's too bad the show seems intent on reunited Holden and Lily because Craig makes Lily likable for me.

Geez, it will be my luck that Luke will probably end up going back to Noah. :deadhorse:

I think - I read on another board, and don't know how much of it is true... but I suspect it is...

You will not like this.
