Conan O'Brien takes late night show to TBS By Alan Duke, CNN STORY HIGHLIGHTS * Former Tonight Show host Conan O'Brien will return to late night talk a show on TBS * The show is scheduled to begin airing in November, according to the cable channel * Negotiations for the deal began last week LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Ousted "Tonight Show" host Conan O'Brien will return to late-night television in November with a show on cable channel TBS, the network said Monday. O'Brien's talk show will air weeknights at 11 p.m. ET/PT, leading into "Lopez Tonight" which will shift to a midnight start, TBS said. "I can't think of anything better than doing my show with Conan as my lead-in," George Lopez said. "It's the beginning of a new era in late-night comedy." Negotiations for the deal began last week after Lopez called O'Brien to ask him to consider joining the network, TBS said. "In three months I've gone from network television to Twitter to performing live in theaters, and now I'm headed to basic cable," O'Brien said in a news release. "My plan is working perfectly." The new show has not yet been given a name. O'Brien has been off the air since January when NBC canceled Jay Leno's prime time hour after disappointing ratings led to an affiliate revolt. NBC's local stations suffered a drop in ratings for their 11 p.m. newscasts in the months that Leno's earlier show was a lead-in. NBC paid O'Brien and his staff an estimated $40 million to clear the way for Leno to return to the "Tonight Show" host chair he handed off to O'Brien last year. The settlement left O'Brien free to launch a competing show after September 1, 2010. The ouster of O'Brien after just seven months on the show stirred his friends and fans -- dubbed Team CoCo -- to launch a variety of anti-NBC protests. Leno recently told Joy Behar, host of HLN's "The Joy Behar Show," that he expected O'Brien would return to late-night television as a head-to-head competitor. "I think Conan will come back, and he'll be strong and, you know, we'll all compete against one another," Leno said. "It should be me against (David) Letterman, against Conan, against (Jimmy) Kimmel, and then you see who wins," he said, referring to all the other late-night comedians. Conan's giving his first interview since the Leno debacle (or shebacle as Neon Dion would say....lol) on 60 Minutes this Sunday. The odd thing is that NBC says he can't do any tv appearances until 5/1 so they are unable to promote the show. And he has to be very care what he says about NBC and Leno. I will be tuned in! http://www.irishcentral.com/ent/Conan-OBrien-to-break-silence-on-TV-with-60-Minutes-92417429.html |

How is Jay doing in the ratings since going back to Tonight? I felt bad for Conan, the way things happened, but I can't really blame Jay, unless he went to NBC and said "Hey I want Tonight back, get it done or I leave". |

Jay is beating Dave again, but the numbers aren't as high as they were before... |

Yeah......that's what I heard. And also that his demographics are skewering older which I guess they don't like. |

Some funny stuff on the first three shows. I'm glad he's back (and had strong debut numbers). The set is fine. I like the episode titles. I'm bummed he didn't get to keep his theme music... |

I'm so happy he is back. Hubby doesn't understand the set but I love it. I'm also bummed about the music but in the big scheme of things I'm still happy. I laughed to myself about Andy being on the couch and not at that stupid podium. Howard Stern was always bitching about Andy being at far away and how it didn't make sense. Life is good. I just hope Conan's rating still stay strong. I really DISLIKE Jay so I'm all good with him killing the competition for as long as possible. (OK Dax, I know you 'like' Jay and it's unlikely that I'll get my way but ... just saying). |

It's more 'I don't hate Jay'. I've respected his work ethic and USED to find him pretty funny (I'd say I was a 'big fan' back when he was a regular guest on Letterman, but that was, you know, a long time ago...), and I support the premise that he was ALSO screwed fairly big-time by NBC, but... the dude IS a bit of a weasel, and easily my least favorite in the late night game. I may argue that it's not ALL deserved (he never said he was ready to retire), but... I do enjoy seeing him bashed by Letterman or Kimmel. I love Letterman. I always have. I like Conan. I think this show will be a big success for TBS. I like Jimmy Kimmel, but don't watch him much. I like Jimmy Fallon, but don't watch him much. I'm 'eh' on Craig Fersguson - he's likable, but I've never really laughed much at his stuff. Jon Stewart is awesome. Leno - 'Headlines' is always a funny bit... |

I keep forgetting to record the new show! I know he kicked ass in the ratings his first night. I love "The Year 2000". It's such a goofy bit but it always makes me laugh and I love it when he has guests do it with him. Howard is totally obsessed with Bill Carter's new book, "The War For Late Night". He's going on and on about it so much that now I've got to read the damn thing. Supposedly there are a lot of juicy details in it. http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2010-11-08/bill-carters-the-war-for-late-night-reviewed/ |
