'Lie To Me': Why it deserves to live. Why it may not. You can help.

Lie To Me, the Tim Roth I-know-what-you’re-thinking-because-your-eyelid-twitched crime show, just got an order from Fox for an additional three scripts. It deserves the full “back nine” order — a full season. Here’s why:

• It’s gotten better: more tense, funnier, smarter. Under new showrunner Shawn Ryan (The Shield), Roth’s Cal Lightman has been put under more pressure this season. He leveraged his company, The Lightman Group, to buy out his ex-wife and keep her from moving his daughter to Chicago. As those few of us who watched last night saw, Cal’s cranky about this. He has to take grungier, cheesier clients to drum up fast cash. And a cranky Cal is a very good Cal: Roth excels at orneriness.

• Lie To Me deserves to prove itself over another season, to demonstrate where it’s going. It’s clear that Ryan, the producers, and the writers have a plan — they want to provide more intensity to the show, so it’s not just The Mentalist Lite. (Maybe that’s the wrong comparison: Can The Mentalist get any lighter? Oh, that’s right, it can: It’s called Psych.) Right now, following Fox’s King Crankypants, House, Lie To Me suffers from its lead-in comparison as much as it benefits from House’s big ratings. It also gets bumped around, as it did last night, due to Fox’s airing of baseball play-offs.

• Last night, we saw how good Lie To Me can be. With a superb guest appearance by Garret Dillahunt (Deadwood) as a gun-wielding hostage-taker, Roth and co-star Kelli Williams really got to show what they can do. Lie To Me has all the makings of a solid, maybe even surprisingly original series.

But it needs more of a vote of confidence from its network. And from you.

I like this show. I do think it's getting better.

I've liked it since the first eppy.

I think it's pretty good. I was worried ti would get boring as all they do is catching people lying, but they do make it interesting. The cases are always different and I do enjoy each episode.

Did anyone catch last nights return of 'Lie to Me'? I loved seeing Jason Dohring from Veronica Mars. He played a great psychopath!

Just saw the one with Dohring - yeah, he was really good...

(I like seeing Howard Hesseman when he pops up places, too).

I was so psyched that my sweet Logan would be there and look what I got :( But he was really good as the creepy psycho.

The new eppy was also good, I really love this show.

Liked the flashbacks a lot. Nicely done.

Logan was only rarely 'sweet', of course...

I'm still one behind, but yeah, I like Lie To Me... kinda glad it got a third season, kinda bummed Shawn Ryan won't be the EP any more...

Very much looking forward to the episode featuring eight Shield alums - that should be great fun.

Dax, when I say sweet I mean adorable when looking at Veronica, when he lvoed her, of course. He was just the cutest when he was looking at her with his puppy eyes.

As a character in general, not that sweet. Damn, I miss VM so much. OT: Have you seen the two clips from th epilot of VM as an FBI agent? It made me cry the first time I saw it. I hate them for cancelling the show.

Yeah, I liked the 'Season 4' mini-presentation quite a bit. Bummed it didn't happen.

I'm grateful for the three seasons we got, but yeah, would have been happier with it running four or five years.

Shelle_cr, I know EXACTLY what you mean when you talk about Logan on VM being sweet. I too miss that show. :(

Dohring's great... played Logan's levels really well. He often conveyed a lot of strong emotions WITHOUT dialogue...

I'm very much for him getting a big breakout role, becoming better-known to the world-at-large, instead of just being a 'secret' to the tiny handful of us that watched VM (or Moonlight).

I know that all 10 viewers of VM appreciate him as an actor, but I want everyone to do so.

I agree, he's really talented and is capable of displaying a range emotion with no dialogue.

This week's (with Max Martini from The Unit) was fun - they had a character with my name... my ears pricked up every time they'd say 'Dax lied' and whatever...

Also liked Emily's funny text: 'Torres here. Drunk. Help.'

Dax! I was thinking of you the whole eppy!

I liked the new two eppys, I watched them together.

I love Melissa George, I'm just not sure I like where the story is going now. Anyway, still loving the show.

Missed the Dohring love-fest. I caught this ep though I'm not a fan of the lead actor in LTM. Dohring (and HH) were terrific. He deserves a big role.

I miss VM so much.

Me too.

VM was such a good show. There are shows I miss and there are shows I MISS i.e. VM, Studio 60, Pushing Daisies.

Dohring surely deserves a big role, I cannot wait for him to get a major gig soon.

That surprises me. Tim Roth's always good. Yes, he's doing a very bizarre character performance here, but it works for me...

I like the emerging Melissa George arc so far.

I hated....just hated res dogs and pulp fiction. I am not a tarentino fan and hubby has tried.... So I'm prejudiced.

Not sure about the new eppy.

It felt rushed. Everything.

Every single plot felt weird.

THe case, Clara, Em ...

Emily having a crush on Loker... fine, but the kiss was extreme, yes. And more than a little implausible... he's IMing her back, so she REALLY thought he was, like, interested? No, I think she's smarter than that, schoolgirl crush or not...

Yeah, that's not a lot of story mileage out of Clara owning a big chunk of the firm. Weird out.

Easy casting... so as soon as you see Richard Burgi, you think 'scummy guy'...

Always love seeing Sheryl Lee, but figured she'd be the big bad right away.

Dax, I totally agree about the casting. RB is a safe bet.

As for Sheryl, the way they ignored her at the beginning made it too obvious. There was no way she would be the wife without saying a word.

As I say, a rushed eppy. But I'm looking forward to the new one.

back to Jason Dohring talk.

He was on CSI LV this season, ep 1012, a golf eppy. He was making his looks, you know, the hurt deer, what a cutie.

I think I shall start a campaign "Give Jason Dohring a show"!
