BBC America is running a five-nites-in-a-row miniseries version of Torchwood called Children of Earth for season three. 7/20-7/24

Day One, tonite's episode, was awesome, with action, drama, subtext, and sass. And a very accessible episode (and series) for newbies to jump in. I'm not sure if BBC-A is repeating Day One tomorrow before Day Two, but I'm pretty sure the entire miniseries gets repeated later this summer.

Watch it. You will fall in love with the characters.

Gate---I tell you true, Captain Jack is mine. ALL MINE!

Bringing this post over from the archives where I gave background on the show. Sorry to say, the miniseries aspect meant James Marsters wasn't part of this season.

I'm blatantly pimping this show. For those of us who like scifi/supernatural, this one is great.

Think X-Files on steroids, with heapin' helping extras of sex and violence. The first season just concluded on BBCAmerica. While quality was spotty sometimes, it's still better than 90% of most TV. They're re-running all of the season between now and January 28th, when season two begins. Reviewers who've seen early episodes of Season 2 say it's really improved in quality, character development, and that blend of personal drama and big adventure.

Summary (from http://www.shannonsullivan.com/drwho/torchwood.html -includes an episode guide)
QUOTE
The Torchwood Institute was created in 1879 by order of Queen Victoria (thanks to a visit from Dr. Who...) Its mission: to safeguard the British Isles from extraterrestrial incursion, and to acquire alien technology for the benefit of the Empire.

Despite its apparent destruction in modern times, something of Torchwood has survived, and continues to operate in Cardiff on the site of a rift in time and space, the existence of which dates back more than a century.

Its stories are told in Torchwood, a new Doctor Who spin-off which debuted in October 2006.

A brief bio of captain Jack, imo the most intriguing character
QUOTE
For a while, Jack Harkness was a Time Agent in the 51st century, until the people he served wiped two years from his memory. In retaliation, he became a con man, seeking to profit from his former bosses. And then he met the Doctor, and Jack was transformed into a hero, traversing time and space... until he died, a victim of the dreaded Daleks. But Jack was revived and made immortal, only to find himself abandoned in the year 200,000. Jack eventually returns to present-day Earth and takes control of the Cardiff branch of the Torchwood organisation, though his decades-long journey leaves him callous and detached, sometimes so focussed on the larger picture that he forgets about the small, fragile details which enrich humanity. Now that Jack has been reunited with the Doctor and understands the reality of why he was left behind, it remains to be seen how he will continue to evolve.

Disclaimer - The series contains a lot of slash, both overt and as subtext. Captain Jack is bi. The best kiss in Season 1 was between him and a doomed WWII fighter pilot. James Marsters(Buffy's Spike) guests in the Season 2 premiere and plays an omnisexual time traveling character who's hell-on-wheels and shares a hot scene with Barrowman's Captain Jack. He's already committed to at least one return in Season 3.

KMInfinity, have you seen "The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances" 2-parter of Doctor Who? Those were the episodes that introduced the character of Captain Jack. I really loved them. Hell, I loved all of Steven Moffat's episodes for the most part (My only quibble being with the River Song character in his last two-parter).

I got my parents hooked on Doctor Who. I intentionally put those two episodes first on the tape. Now, they love to watch various BBC America shows.

I don't have cable anymore, but, they'll be watching the Torchwood miniseries. I did see the commercial for it on Hulu.com.

Anyhow, I love Captain Jack, too. And loved seeing James Marsters on Torchwood last season.
I just wish that the second season hadn't gotten so dark.

A Captain Jack quote from "The Doctor Dances" episode:

Quote:

"The last time I was sentenced to death, I ordered four hyper-vodkas for my breakfast. All a bit of a blur after that... I woke up in bed with both of my executioners. Lovely couple, they stayed in touch! Can't say that about most executioners."

Hey Phantom! I've seen ALL of the 9th and 10th Doctor incarnations. Love DT the most but Eccleston was awesome too.

And I think Moffat wrote one of my favorites? Blink. Truly scary.

Yeah I was sad that Owen was killed (I think) but I understood. Killing off Tosh, though, was just heartwrenching. The one hour clip show did a nice tribute and a good job explaining the reasoning, and i have to admit it makes sense seeing what's going on in The Children of Earth. I won't say more - no spoilers! - hope you can see it soon!

LOL. Love me Captain Jack! My favorite quote from that of course is CE's "For once, everybody lives." And his dancing. And the clear metaphoring. :lmfao:

And JM's guest star turn was perfect.

Eppy 2 and 3 continue to shine.

This is the best thing on TV this summer. Really.

The connections being made between the characters and their families, whom we've never seen (except for Rhys), the size of the story, the hidden agenda of the search for 2 new Torchwood agents (LOVE Habiba-hope Gwen's PC bloke joins too), the reveals about the past (Oh Captain Jack! You didn't!!! Please have a good reason!), the awesomeness of the action, the passion, the very very creepy alien, the tension with Frobisher....

Okay I'll stop.

Repeating: This is the best thing on TV this summer.

Yeah, my favorite part of the episode was the "everybody lives" part. I thought Moffat was very effective with the horror, sci-fi, and comedy aspects in his Doctor Who episodes. I never would have expected that a little kid calling out for his mother could be so creepy. :run:

The first episode of Doctor Who that I ever saw was Gridlock. The episodes that got me hooked on the show were the "Human Nature/Family of Blood" 2 parter episodes. Unfortunately, I missed most of the Blink episode when it first aired. I ended up having to wait months for it to be re-aired. Of course, now they have Doctor Who and Torchwood episodes on iTunes. It's too bad they didn't have them on iTunes back then. :groan:

Phantom, I'm asuming you haven't seen CoE yet, so I won't say much, except that I was not very happy with Ep 3-4-5. Fandom seems to be equally divided between those who loved it and those who hated it.

It's very VERY grim, not what I expected or wanted. I could respect creative choices that differ from my own vision or *likes*, if they make sense. I thought much of CoE did not.

BUT, The latest Dr. Who was on last bight on BBC America - Planet of the Dead, and it was EXCELLENT!

I did end up looking at reviews (with spoilers) for CoE on tv.com. The episodes cost $2.99 each on iTunes, so I thought it would be better to look at the reviews, and then decide whether or not to get the episodes.

After reading the reviews, I think that CoE would be too grim, dark, and tragic for me, as well.

I'm glad that you liked the new Doctor Who episode. It's on iTunes, as well. So, I might end up watching it this weekend.

I really enjoyed the Planet of the Dead episode. I liked Michelle Ryan as the temporary companion. I also liked her in Merlin and Jekyll.

I did watch a little of the Torchwood COE mini on youtube. But, I'm not sure whether or not I'll buy it on iTunes or not. The $2.99 episodes were the HD ones, with the standard definition ones being cheaper.

Glad you liked Planet of the Dead. I'm really apprehensive about David Tennant's Doctor ending... :bye1: I'm not ready for the 11th incarnation.

Yeah, I really wish that David Tennant would have stuck around for Moffat's 1st season.
