I agree I think it would have to be someone unknown. Jeff was basically unknown and the show was unknown so it worked perfectly. I think now will be harder since we know what to expect and any newbie better know their stuff or the viewers wont like it. I cant think of a single "name" or past contestant that would come anywhere near being a good host. |

Jeffie wasn't unknown to me.......I loved him as the host on Rock and Roll Jeopardy. Seriously! A big agree with having an unknown take over though.....but it should be someone that knows and enjoys the game as much as Jeff does. But I don't even want to think about him leaving yet. Thanks for the scoop, Bilki my man!!! :buddies: |

I'm so glad that Stephanie's arm injury was ok. I love her so much! I would have been pissed if she was medically evacuated during the first part of the first challenge! I don't understand Cerie as a Hero. I think she is much more a villain. (she is fun to watch though) I really wish Ozzy and Bobby Jon were here as well. This cast needs more eye candy! |

I sure hope so........that preview looked a little scary. I had forgotten how funny (and fun) Boston Rob was to watch.
I'm with you on that one, Scorpio. It's pretty bad when the best looking dude is Colby!!! Although I forgot about James.......his body is like......freaking amazing. He was cracking us up with the story about his great grandma snapping the chicken's neck and terrorizing him as a kid. I love him! It's going to be a brutally fabulous season! |

James is very hot as well, and Colby is still pretty studly. But Ozzy and Bobby Jon were my fav hotties. (Sorry Cheryl, please share Ozzy with me) Boston Rob is great. He needs to stick around for a while to lose some of those extra pounds. He looks hotter emaciated. lol. I hope he is okay next week. He didnt look so good. So glad that my girl Stephanie dodged the bullet tonight. I was getting nervous when Cerie brought up her name. |

I was repeatedly terrified whenever Amanda's name was mentioned for booting. I'm so in love with her. Fun first episode. Candice is not very familiar. (And Danielle should be MORE familiar, having coming in second in her game, but...). Disappointed in Russell for not finding an immunity idol yet. It was fun in the first challenge when he was digging for the bag, and we KNEW he'd be the one to find it... Preview with Rob was scary. But if he's dead, they can just take him to the temple and cure him. Then we'll hope he's not 'infected'... |

Did anyone else think it's a little odd that everyone kept saying they knew Russell was a great player and Parvati said she knew she was making a deal with the devil? How do they know how he played? I thought this season started taping before they started to air the last season. I'm just confused now but LOVED the show last night! |

I think KMI said something about Parvati knowing Russell from 'outside'... yeah, nobody here SAW him play, but maybe he talked himself up a bit in the Getting To Know You phase... Right, at this point, Russell hasn't been home for very long, doesn't know if he's won Game 19 or not, and the show hasn't even started airing. And Rob's baby is only 3 weeks old, which is a sad time to go away for maybe another 39 days. |

LOVED the 2 hr premiere. They made the right call in making sure we remember everyone, why we liked or hated them, why we would wanna watch these guys again... (except I still can't remember anything about Danielle. I deliberately avoided internet check to see if watching her would spark even a twinge but nada....) In no particular order... The music alone shows why Survivor is heads and shoulders above all other reality programs. Loved the Heroes/LOTR inspired music and the Darth Vaderish Villains music. At least, that's what I hear..... LOVEDDDDD Colby - handsomer now than before, imo. Jerri looked so beautiful getting off the heli and then so ordinary once the game started. Love it that she's there. Coach seems more tolerable this time around, not as full of himself. Possibly a good one to examine in terms of editing choices. Boston Rob is my all-time favorite Survivor ever. And now I remember why. In the right format, he could be a star. He's one of the very few former players I think could replace Jeff as host....if he could avoid too much partiality....he doesn't suffer fools much. I've decided I'd rather hear Russell's narration than Rupert's. Despite Russell's big ego, he's insightful and witty. I HATE the tribal council location. The set is too cramped, the steps suck, and the whole thing looks stupid. LmAo that they are talking about *the south pacific* and not Samoa. These are the exact same beaches and locations used last fall for Russell's previous season. Game talk~~~~~ The fact that Cerie couldn't get enough support to boot Stephenie bodes ill for her game control style. Colby seemed to control the vote manipulation. He was slick....approached people and informed them as if it was a done-deal. He just disliked Sugar for personal reasons and so wanted her gone. Voting with one's emotions rather than logic isn't usually a good strategic choice, so let's see how it plays out. Sugar was always a weak challenge player.... ****************** Just wondering if some of y'all are spoiled for the whole show? I wouldn't mind starting a separate spoiled thread for discussion of editing in light of the spoilers. Edited by KMInfinity, Feb 12 2010, 11:17 AM.

Jeff's Blog We’re baaaaaack… and it feels so good! Might as well start at the beginning. Last night’s two-hour premiere was one of our best ever. In fact, it was so good I think CBS should air it again. In the words of our fearless leader Mark Burnett, ”It was epic!” It started with the kickass marooning where the Survivors landed on the beach courtesy of the Royal New Zealand Air Force and their Huey helicopters. INSIGHT: We had to get special permission from the New Zealand government to get the use of the Huey’s and the Air Force personnel to fly them. We came to an agreement that allowed the RNZAF to use our rehearsals (without the real Survivors on board) as an opportunity to also practice various mission maneuvers for which they needed a location and situation to conduct them. It was a win-win. If you watch it again you can see that when we did it for real with the Survivors on board and the Huey’s approaching the beach, it even resembles a mission. Two come in and land, sand flying around. They depart and the other two come in. It’s also worth mentioning that it went off without a hitch. Everybody hit their marks, it was magical. As a thank you we had the RNZAF personnel rehearse one of our big challenges against our dream team. It was a great day in which I swapped one of my Survivor baseball caps for one of their RNZAF caps. THE MAROONING Moments in, we knew that we had made the right choice to go with the theme of Heroes vs. Villains. You could feel the rivalry even as the two tribes were departing the helicopters. The heroes were puffing their chests with pride, the villains were puffing their chests looking for a fight. The opening Q/A was fascinating. The fact that every villain believes they are a hero speaks to how important perspective is in this game. ”Outwit, outplay, outlast.” It’s an important factor to keep in mind as you watch this game. There are very few rules in Survivor, the contestants are responsible for determining which qualities to reward and that is where the perspective of having played once before will have a big impact. For instance, if Russell plays the same game he did in Samoa during this season, he has a much better chance of winning because this group of players has a different set of criteria for what it takes to win the game. That is only one of the reasons I believe this season is going to deliver. We knew we wanted a big, badass challenge right off the bat to let them know this season was going to be physical and demanding. We expected a battle but we didn’t expect it to rise to the physical level it did. Injury count: Dislocated shoulder (Stephenie), broken toe (Rupert – man you should have heard him screaming as the doctors tried to set it), and a topless finish and double ”flip-off.” (Thanks, Sugar.) On top of those injuries, there were lots of bruised up bodies that had been worked over during those digs in the sand. The Coach/Colby matchup was one of the more anticipated. Colby waltzed through his first Survivor experience in Australia virtually unchallenged. Coach, his opponent, believes he can do anything and beat anybody… and whadaya know, he did. Coach worked Colby. He even had me fooled — I thought Colby was dragging Coach along, turns out Coach was riding Colby to the finish line. In typical hero fashion, Colby merely nodded at the loss and moved on. It’s early in the game and he didn’t seem too concerned. And if you had any question about why Tyson was invited back, he answered that question with this quip: ”I can only imagine what Colby is thinking… I may as well become a woman because there is no point on trying to maintain my masculinity now.” Ah, it’s one of the nice things about having returning Survivors – they’re great interviews. I have to tell you, writing this blog is a pleasure because this episode was absolutely fantastic. I challenge you to show the first 20 minutes of this episode to anybody – Survivor fan or not – and have them not want to watch the rest of the premiere and the season. FIRST MOMENTS ON THEIR BEACHES It was interesting to watch the two very different ways the first moments on their respective beaches played out. The Heroes got to work quickly. Everybody pitching in, their experience really showing. The Hero music was appropriately uplifting and heroic. The Villains ignored shelter and turned immediately to strategy. Russell was back to his bag of tricks, making alliances with everybody. The Villain music was also appropriate: heavy, suspicious and dramatic. Russell made an interesting comment: ”I’m the best to ever play this game and now I get to prove it.” How do you feel about the idea behind his cocky declaration? Do you believe that the winner of this season will go down as the ”best to ever play?” Or will the winner of this season simply be ”the winner of Heroes vs Villains.” There are so many factors that go into someone winning this game that I often wonder if you can ever truly declare someone the best. I will say that to win this season you will have to play one helluva game. Nobody is going to win by coattailing it. No chance that kind of behavior will be rewarded. Playing an ”under the radar game” is different than riding somebody’s coattails. Please don’t ask me to explain the difference because I’m not sure I can; it’s just a gut feeling that I believe I can spot. Another fascinating aspect of the first few days is watching the various egos inflate and deflate. We have a lot of true leaders this season and when you’re a leader it’s tough to accept the role of being a follower. Coach is a perfect example. It is painful for Coach when he tries to be a follower. He’s a good solider but he feels he’s a better General. Boston Rob was playing him for a fool during their ”coconut tree challenge” when he tried to entice him to climb the tree. But I actually think that Boston Rob and Coach could be a good team if they could both get past their egos. Coach still wants it badly and Rob needs some of that in his alliances because after becoming a husband and a father, I’m not sure Rob wants it badly enough. Rob can last a long time based on sheer street smarts but he will need to get his ”Survivor instincts” back quickly if he is to last. IMMUNITY CHALLENGE The first immunity challenge was probably more revealing about the tribes than the first reward challenge. The differences in the strength of both tribes was clearly illuminated in this challenge. The Heroes are stronger but their egos get in the way. The Villains work together better. That was the difference in this challenge. Boston Rob and Sandra led the villains to victory by leading them through the puzzle. Period. They’re both scrappy players and scrappy will be the key to winning this season. That doesn’t mean a Hero can’t win, it merely means that in my opinion, by the time this season is over, the idea of what makes up a Hero or Villain will fluctuate quite a bit. ”Outwit, outplay… outlast.” Okay, without thinking it through – just off the top of my head — here are some overall thoughts about some of the returning Survivors: Sandra Diaz – I am so glad she is back. I love her lippy way of telling it like it is. Courtney is also surprising me early on. I like how hard she fought in the initial challenge. Cirie is a legit, 100% full-on threat to win this game. Parvati, if given any kind of an opening will worm her way back into a solid alliance. Russell is a no-brainer. Take him out early or risk seeing him in the final again. Tom Westman, so glad he came back for another go. He needs a strong alliance and if he gets it, he will go deep. He’s a very good ”people person.” Rupert, Rupert, Rupert. It’s hard for me to distinguish the Survivor Rupert from the real Rupert. Maybe there isn’t a difference anymore, but I know this… kids still love them some Rupert! TRIBAL COUNCIL One of the greatest tribal council sets we’ve ever had. Forty feet in the air, a massive build, it is stunning. Our two production designers, Jesse Jensen and Dan Munday, are incredible talents. The fact that we have not lost them to the movie world is a testament to how strong our team is and how much we all enjoy working on this show. The idea of ”past relationships” came up during Tribal Council and it is going to be a theme this season. If you’re in a Survivor pool, make sure you factor this into your decision of who you think will win. It could go either way – being tied to others from your season could work for you or against you, just as being the only one out there from your season could work for you or against you – but it will be discussed a lot and will factor into how people vote. James illuminated the biggest challenge on the hero tribe: The Heroes must start listening to each other and let the ego go. Otherwise tribal council will become their second home. THE FIRST TO GO Sugar didn’t really seem like she was ready to do this again. I think she fell victim to the ”what did I get myself into” realization that often happens to a returning Survivor. They forget how miserable it was and so they say ”Yes!” to returning for another go. Then they get out there and by the end of day one they are quickly reminded… ”Oh yeah, I forgot. This sucks.” I don’t think her tribe will miss her, and in fairness, I don’t think she’ll miss the tribe. I think Sugar would be the first to admit that the Survivor experience was more about being on television than it was anything else. I’m glad she came back, she was worth taking a shot on, but Colby said it best, given the amazing amount of personality this season, she won’t be missed. |

Look how excited he is just to write about it! I actually loved the new tribal council set up in the trees. It must be amazing to be up there. A big agree about Coach not being as annoying.....yet. Haha! A Coach and Jerri showmance......who woulda thunk it?!? Love, love, love, love, LOVED the first show. Did I mention how much I enjoyed the show? Seriously. Oh! And I was able to watch the Surviving Survivor show finally because they re-aired tonight. Woo-hoo......life is good! :applause: |

Here's a little info relating to editing. It's not spoilery at all - it describes how the reward matchup challenge actually happened.... The Heroes did NOT win 3-2...It was a best of five matchup. and at one point the heroes were up 4-0 before Coach dragged Colby to the Villains mat. From Dalton Ross's blog on ew.com. http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20343684_2,00.html (my bolds) As some of you may know, often when there is a challenge on Survivor that is presented as a ''first team to three wins,'' in actuality, it was something much longer. Take this reward challenge: What you saw on TV was a ''first one to three wins.'' But in reality, the teams actually played all the way to five. Remember how the Villains went up 2-1 after Coach dragged Colby back to the Villains mat? In actuality, the Heroes had a whopping 4-0 lead when that contest took place, and that Coach victory merely got the Villains back to 4-1. But this was just the tip of the out-of-order iceberg, and what I am about to tell you is so convoluted and confusing we may need Lostexpert Doc Jensen to decipher it. The first-round match-up you saw with Stephenie and Cirie vs. Parvati and Danielle was actually round six and got the Villains back to being down only 4-2. But wait, it gets even more confusing. Remember how you saw Stephenie dislocate her shoulder and Probst remarked how she injured herself in the very first round of the very first challenge. Well, that was true, but it wasn't the round you saw. The actual first round (that you did not see) featured the exact same match-up (Stephenie and Cirie vs. Parvati and Danielle) and it was actually a Heroes victory. Not only that, but the injury appeared to occur while Stephenie was slapping the mat with her extended arm to give her team the win. So, the round you saw presented as the first match-up was actually a rematch that Stephenie was participating in after she had already dislocated her shoulder! (How tough is she?) So, the injury happened in one place, but was edited into another. Now because this is all a bit hard to follow, let me be clear about one thing: There is no monkeying around when it comes to Survivor challenges. The teams compete and the winner is the winner. Nothing is rigged. When you saw people winning rounds, they were winning rounds, maybe just not in the exact order it actually happened. Like all elements of the show, the producers just often record much more than can actually show so then have to figure out the best way to condense it all. (For example, the one round where Coach dragged Colby to his mat took over nine minutes by itself. It was an epic duel that was mesmerizing to witness, but simply too long to show in its entirety) And Stephenie did injure her shoulder in that competition against those same players, just not in the round they showed us. I'm actually surprised they edited it this way because watching Stephenie dislocating it as she won, and then coming back to compete after injuring it was pretty dramatic in itself. Again, just not enough time. Edited by KMInfinity, Feb 15 2010, 09:15 AM.

I think whoever does the editing on this show does a fantastic job. It is basically what keeps us all coming back for more. I can't believe Stephenie played AFTER her dislocated shoulder was popped back into place. That girl is a freak! In a good way......WOW!!! |

Funny to see all these egos packed into one show. Should be interesting to watch them all try to eat each other alive. All I could think was "such a little man" when Russell was yammering on about how he was the King of the Mountain until someone knocks him off. I'm hoping that happens soon! Colby is handsome and James has one helluva body but I agree that there should be more eye candy. Cirie is the only one I'm truly happy to see again. Some of the others I enjoy but no real love for them. Thanks for the Jeff blog, KMI! Always a good read, though I rarely share his opinions. Reading about the editing makes me realize how successful they are at manipulating me. Now I'll begin questioning everything! |

I should have cautioned that MB swears (and has, since season one's Stillman suit) that the editing and manipulation in Survivor is stringently controlled so that nothing is "changed" or directed, but just condensed or edited to fit time or increase drama. Thus, the heroes won that challenge and that's what the TV audience saw.....just not all of it, in order. |

OK, the winner is the actual winner. And I can accept that they think they're making it more entertaining. But it still feels deceptive to display the score on the screen when that wasn't how it happened. Or, they show Russell yammering about being the King right after Rob helps to make fire. Did Russell actually say that after the fire making incident? I've often wondered about their positioning of the Survivor's commentary....if they stick some comments in for dramatic effect, though it may not have happened in that order. I still enjoy the show but they're a bunch of sneaky snakes, if you ask me! |

Now don't you be callin' MY Jeffie Probst a sneaky snake! Mark Burnett is fair game, though. ;) I've always known (well probably not the REALLY early shows) that the editing of the commentary wasn't always in line with what was happening. It's probably the same with any reality show, isn't it? That Russell is so freaking full of himself. He still makes me laugh though. It's funny......I didn't remember Colby and Jerri hatin' on each other so much but just watching that first episode brought it all back. I wish they would have brought Jonathan Penner back instead of Candice from that season. He was much more memorable and fun to watch. |

Oh, I got ya. With Survivor, they're always throwing in some sort of little twists so I guess they could do something different this time. But I doubt it. I laugh every time Jeff is narrating one of their challenges and says "Villains!" It just sounds endearingly corny. :P |

I think it would be neat if in the end it is 1 hero and 1 villian left standing. Now that I am thinking about that though, there really wouldn't be a way for a hero jury member to know a villian and vice versa so it would be hard for the hero to convince villian jury members to vote for them in the end if there wasn't a merge. |

I'm thinking this isn't the first time James' inner bully has reared its ugly head. I can't recall exactly why, but I remember being happy when he got voted out in China with both of those Immunity Idols in his pocket. He's always been more of a "me" player than a team player, IMO. Obviously, there were some problems with communication during this challenge, but with the way James went on you'd think he was the only one who lost. It's funny to me that the "heroes" can't seem to get it together during the immunity challenges. |
