The S3 retooled episodes have been SO strong. The finish seems on-track and headed for an excellent conclusion. I am so sorry this is wrapping up. The show has really done an outstanding job of developing minor characters, creating a sense of community, balancing realistic and supernatural themes, and exploring major characters and their psyches. Holly Hunter, in particular, has been superb. The payoff this season - exploring the deeper reasons for her sarcasm, drinking, over-the-top lifestyle, and binge sex near addiction - has been an emotional roller coaster and produced stellar performances from Hunter and the main cast.

Leon Rippy, Kenny Johnson, Laura San Giacomo, and Lorraine Toussaint have been special faves.

Too bad DVD sales have been weak. This deserves more acclaim.

It's been so long since I read about it ending ...wasn't sure if it was because she was done or if it was the ratings. Either way, I'll miss it. The episodes have been so good that it makes it even worse that it's ending. And does it sound silly that I love the whole angel idea?

Anyone know...the blond guy that gave the girl the pills...is he an angel or a demon? I know I've seen him before but I forget.

I saw that The Closer will start soon. I thought this one was canceled too.

All the good, original, well written shows get canceled anymore, but i agree the last few shows have been great and HH definitely deserves an emmy.
The blond guy is evil, don't know in what capacity but that was established last time he was on. He is also HH's (in real life) man, according to the TV Guide.

The cable TV business continues to confound me. Apparently TNT wanted to renew SG but the show's producer (Fox) declined as it was costing them too much to produce. Also, HH refused to allow cuts to talent and crew. Weak DVD sales for S1 and 2 were the final nail.

The bad guy is supposedly a writer who claims that every moment of *grace* is followed by terrible consequences. He claims to be writing a book to document all of this. His major thesis is that the Oklahoma City bombing was "payback" for some miracle (I forget). He warned Grace that her miraculously safe fall with Neely would result in a future disaster (the child dying). Not sure if he's *just* evil or an actual demon/fallen angel.

I'm interested in seeing how the show plays with this motif as it ends, as a major Catholic tenet is that God causes no evil, that the idea of a *balance* between good and evil is blasphemous - God is ALL powerful. Evil exists as a consequence of free will and bad choice - God all-powerfully always brings GOOD out of evil, not balances good and evil. The case can be made that God "allows" evil because he allows free will. This is the heart of the show thematically. Over and over the show has gotten right the idea that people (Grace) rail against God for their own failings and the evil choices made....and yet want freedom and free choice.

I know some have slammed the show for its examination of religious and philosophical themes, but I think they do an outstanding job of presenting the complexity rather than the cheap and easy.

I just finished watching the final two. I am still stuffy and my eyes are puffy! I DO NOT GET WEEPY! What the heck have they done to me?! If it had to end, I guess it was beautiful. I'll say no more right now.

Such a travesty to lose this show. It was one of the smartest, best written, ugly shows ever. I will miss it more than I can say.

I am really sorry to see the show end. It feels inevitable, though, tbh. I am ok with a show ending when the story has been told, rather than dragging it on for too long. Doesn't make it any sadder right now. Some lovely moments in the last 2 hrs.

A fitting ending....though I could tell it was a little rushed...

Thoughts~

  • I knew from the very beginning that she'd die, soon after accepting God, by preventing another McVeigh.....and sometimes the obvious ending is very satisfying.
  • I kind of wish we'd had a scene of Earl and Grace after Grace's death, but I suppose that they wanted to keep the slightest bit of "open interpretation" that it was all in Grace's head. Personally, the show provided numerous evidence that meant it wasn't ambiguous - Grace did have an Angel - but I know some viewers didn't like that.
  • I'd also (or, alternatively) would have liked to see Earl move on to Ham: he was so close to faith, and then Grace's death shatters him, he needs Earl.
  • In fact, I'd make the case that Grace's death should not have been the end of the story, that it wouldn't have been an anticlimax to have her death begin the final episode, seeing how it affected everyone. That would tie in with all those stories earl was telling about how there are so many threads and events that connect to some big tragedy....
  • Where was her brother Father Johnny? A funeral eulogy would have been a good *flashback* homage opportunity to Grace.

  • So many great moments, as tgir said. And so many things that could have been expanded, alas, such as:
  • They had some more story to tell with Neely and Ham and that got condensed severely, imo.
  • Butch's "lack of faith" was another story loss. Even so, the flow from him voicing his opinion to him seeing the stacks of letters unburned in the explosion was a glorious moment.
  • Kate adjusting with her baby....would like to have seen that.
  • Most especially, and extended scene with Rhetta after grace's death...

The way the series ended is causing some confusion with the season identification. Seasons One and Two were 13 episodes each. Some are calling Season Three the entire run up to the finale, others end S3 at the hiatus (episode 10) and are calling the spring return (episodes 11-19) Season Four. I want to watch this and will buy this one so........

The world needs more shows like this right now, and it's sad that it had to end. I thought Grace was a great inspiration to those who screw up over and over again and are full of self hatred but are still loved by God...

Just finished the last two shows...first one: again another show that I felt bored watching. Knowing there was only one left I wanted Grace with her friends and family, not in another state. I stayed away from spoilers but figured she was going to die. The last show just left me wanting more, even with Grace dead. I wanted to see how the others handled it and how Earl handled it. I just wanted to see more. Wish they'd bring a spin off with Earl and the rest of them since Holly Hunter wanted out.
