Hugh Laurie Helps Launch House Ad Campaign
by David Hochman August 25, 2009 02:57 PM EST

The mystery began with a mysterious word: Caduceus. Say it with us – Kuh-doo-she-iss. It’s the name of the ancient symbol for medicine (that winged staff thingee entwined by snakes), and it was Hugh Laurie’s inspiration for an underground ad campaign he conceived for the new season of House.

“Hugh thought we should do snakes on a cane to represent the show,” says House producer Katie Jacobs. Working with the Fox art department, Laurie designed the logo – which signifies both medicine and the cane his character uses – as a gift to House crewmembers, but producers quickly saw its potential for viral marketing. “The last thing we wanted to do in our sixth season was show the typical line-up of cast members on a bus ad,” Jacobs says. “Thanks to Hugh’s idea, we suddenly had a guerilla ad campaign in the making.”

The image began appearing alone – with no reference to the show – last June in major cities across America. The team also put up posters, did 150 sidewalk chalk drawings in various cities and passed out 15,000 tattoos at events, “but nobody knew what it signified at first,” Jacobs says. By mid-summer, Fox launched a teaser site, www.snakesonacane.com, with a countdown clock to House’s premiere date, Sept 21. “People were still baffled,” Jacobs says. “They thought it part of Obama’s health plan.” Once Fox started airing the image during five-second teasers on Hell’s Kitchen and So You Think You Can Dance, fans started figuring it out.

“We pride ourselves on having a smart audience and our fans, especially the teenagers, like to solve any mystery having to do with House,” Jacobs says, adding that the final reveal will clear the confusion up for good. “All I will say is it involves Hugh Laurie and a bunch of live snakes.”

Laurie also helped oversee a second House campaign airing in September that involves narratives about the show’s characters. Why has the actor suddenly gone all Madmen on us? “If anyone knows the show and its characters and fans, it’s Hugh,” Jacobs says. “If it clicks with him, it’s going to click with our audience. And, hey, he was willing to play with live snakes. How can you say no to that?”

LOVED the spoiler about House and Wilson. EEEEEEE!

I don't like House being up against Heroes. We're already screwed this week because both shows are premiering....both are TWO freaking hours long.......AND our Miami Dolphins are playing at the same time. NOOOOOOOO! We've decided to go ahead and tape the shows on our dvr on the 'good' t.v. and watch the game out on the porch. The sacrifices I make for my shows!!! :P

Yeah. When are they gonna step up the DVR capability so i can record everything I want all the time. :P

I'm giving Heroes the heave-ho. It's On-Demand for Fios (or was last season) so if y'all tell me it turned into some awesome show, maybe I'll check it out once again.

House vs Heroes= no competition! I actually dropped Heroes 3 or 4 shows into last season. I did manage to catch the marathon on G4 a few weeks ago. I think Heroes is best served marathon style. Individually it's just weak. Well, for the last two seasons, IMO.

So House it is and Heroes if I happen to catch it on G4

House vs Heroes ~ House ... I can always watch Heroes on demand and agree it's better as a marathon viewing type of show. ;)

House in the insane asylum was epic. Wow, the story with the superhero guy -- just wow. Such an incredibly brilliant episode. This show is head and shoulders above 99% of everything else on TV these days -- as is Hugh Laurie.

I watched it AGAIN last night with hubby. It was such a good episode that 2 / 2 hour viewing was worth it. My husband almost died when superhero guy jumped.... same reaction that my kid and I had.

LOL ... we were wondering did House have the new haircut because he was in the insane asylum or was it because Huge wanted a change.

Best scene was when he was leaving the asylum and he was wearing the smilie face shirt with the building in the back.

Huge Laurie is the best actor on TV.

I've only watched House periodically whenever I catch it, but I DVR'd the show the other night. I am in love! My husband made fun of me because I'm always getting after him for coming off like a jerk to people, a lot like House. I have 1 more show to add to my list My DVR is going to fill up way too fast this fall.......

My husband LOVES House and likes to model himself after him. He even had a meeting at work and gave examples from 'House' a couple of years ago and no one had watched it before so they all went home and started watching it ... and of course LOVED it.

Welcome to the club of House fans. If you have any questions we have a couple of experts here to guide your through. ;)

My House review:

There were some great moments and some great material, especially the focus on House's inner struggles and Andre Braugher's role. Hugh Laurie is simply amazing in the role, and really shows the inner struggles. AB was a true match for House. For once, House has come up against someone who he can't out-think. I think it was a terrific look at the way House manipulates systems and people to get what he wants...and in this case he failed, because he was wrong. Well, he's been wrong before, but Wilson and Cuddy and the crew aren't powerful enough to make House respect them and see it. AB's character was. I hope he becomes a recurring character at least.

However, I felt there were too many *convenient* moments - the writing and plotting felt very manipulative. Especially this: Soooo the writers need House to fall in love to reach his epiphany, and enter the married woman, about to leave town, to become the love interest. House falls in love, realizes something beyond selfishness and self interest exists, and poof, she's gone. No followup. And lots of stuff with him interacting with the other patients just felt *paint-by-numbers* to me.

And I don't care how "in touch" with his inner nice guy House gets, I just don't see him getting up and doing that rap.

My biggest concern is with something more subtle, that I've discussed with my husband (a psych rehab counselor) many times - the two edged issue of taking or not taking meds. While there was a nod to the issue, there was a definite bias towards the taking of meds, and little effort to show WHY so many don't want to do so. House's fears that his *spark* will fade is a valid one. In so many cases the choice isn't between *mental health VS mental sickness* but between *somewhat improved mental health + major side effects VS manageable coping without meds.*

Sure there are definite cases where meds are the only way to become functioning as the alternative is terrible. But the issue isn't as clear cut as this episode made it appear, and I'm not convinced the issue for House, in particular, is as clear cut.

I hope this is followed up. I'd like to see House deal with the issue of taking meds, and maybe have the rapper dude brought back and a look at how maybe his creativity has been stunted.

The rapper guy was so distracting for me because he looks and sounds -- and acts -- exactly like our house contractor. LOL

I agree that this issue need to be addressed more fully. I think they were trying to cram a lot into that two-hour period. The love interest could have played out over several more episodes to make it more realistic. Instead of making this a stand-alone show it would have worked better as an introduction to the season that flowed into other episodes.
