Is it okay to know some spells or do you only learn them at school?

Some reading might teach you the incantations, but I doubt you'd actually be able to use any spells. Just make your character's slate clear and you should be fine. We'll be having classes periodically during the year for all this anyway.

Generally speaking, you don't know spells before coming to school. We'll try to post a list of spells students typically know by that year. You can deviate from the list, but just remember that no one simply learns all the spells instantly and perfectly, and has read two years ahead of where they need to be.

Try to make it so you can't use magic perfectly yet. You're still learning.

To make the answer short though, the only ways you'll ever really learn magic is through classes, a friend, or necessity of knowing something.

You will learn and now spells in three basic ways.

- By progressing in time, your character will automatically know certain, easy spells due to their ease in performance and in learning.
- By reading books and doing study on your own, you can learn spells that are approved for your year.
- By being taught spells in class.
