"Remote!?" Lin'mp said. "You come from here too, don't you? This place isn't remote! It's home!"

Outside, the door to the other ship opened and an ostrich in Federation officer uniform walked out. He looked around, noticing no one else was around. He then saw the transports' doors were open, and realized they had gone ahead: he was late! He ran out and hurried into the HQ through the front doors, entering into the room everyone was in as the room was already configured with the... hologram? I don't know it's a thing that I don't know.

To everyone else, he appeared to fade through the walls as he arrived. "Hey, sorry I'm late, everyone, and wow, is this a fancy building!"

"Captain Turkey," smiled Mr. Walker, "A pleasure of you to join us. Your record proceeds you. And Lin'mp, I once thought much the same. And while this is my home, exploring the universe taught me something."

He pressed a button, and the hologram of Atlas zoomed out. They were in the system, the large star burning red as six planets orbited it. Then the star became a speck. Suddenly there was a cloud of stars, the scale moving outward until the cloud was a giant, spiral shape.

"We exist in a galaxy of billions of systems like ours," said Mr. Walker, "And we're not even that significant of a galaxy."

The hologram zoomed out again, showing ten galaxies, all distant from one another. Charts and figures showed various movements, various galactic nations.

"It may be home, but it is a mote of dust in a much larger universe. Which is exactly why we need protectors, because otherwise home will be swept away under a greater tide."

Let's be weird

Guerrera frowned through this whole exchange. "So what are you expecting us to do?"

"That doesn't mean it's remote," Lin'mp said.

"Well, you know, I suppose it depends on what scale you're using," Marl'nt said. "On the scale of the universe... maybe... everything's remote, while in millimeters, that area over there is remote." He pointed to the side. "And on a scale of 1 to 10, 0 is remote."

"0 isn't even on that scale."

"Oh, right," Captain Turkey said. "I've always had trouble beating my record. I don't know what it is I did that got me so fast but I haven't been able to- wait you mean a different kind of record. Well, hi there, everybody! They call me Captain Turkey."

"Simple questions," stated Mr. Walker, "You Pichup above all should know what I'm talking about. There's always some sort of evil in this universe, but evil has changed faces in the last eleven years. A lot of them are old acquaintances of yours, but now they're blurred. A lot of the evil you'll be fighting will come from good men, trusted allies even. If I sound like I'm avoiding the question, I'm not. A lot of the forces you'll fight are from your old stomping grounds, some are newcomers, but you'll be finding that some aren't going to be as clear cut as before.

But as for what you will do?" he said, shifting in his chair, "I expect you to use good judgement. I expect you to fight until you die for this planet of which many of you hold no attachment or love towards. But, I'm not going to be the one calling the shots; that's your job. I will forward missions to you every once in a while, reports and data on new crises. But you all are on your own, free to go wherever you please with the full blessing and support of Beacon. I will not try to control you or demand any ruleset of you, but remember everything you do will reflect on your teammates and your organization."

"And Beacon too, I imagine," Lin'mp said.

"Well, I'm sure he chose wisely, right?" Captain Turkey said, looking between Lin'mp and Walker. It wasn't much of a secret as to why the YB was disbanded, but looking around, no one there looked like they would order such atrocities or stockpile such destructive weapons. In the end, giving an organization like this so much freedom could be risky, considering the YB eventually had such freedom as their leaders dispersed.

Pichup: Shame we couldn't get anymore old faces around here. I'm like, the only veteran here. I think.

Yoshichu: Hey, what about me?

Pichup: YOU HARDLY DID ANYTHING.

Yoshichu: Pfft, not my problem.

"Most of the old faces are either dead or retired," said Mr. Walker, "But I think our later arrivals will surprise you. Anyway, I do have a mission for you all. It just so happens a small crisis has come up."

Mr. Walker motioned with his hand, suddenly the galaxy map sped back toward Atlas, showing a view of the planet. A dot showed where the Headquarters was, showing data on its location. There was another, red dot in a place labeled "The Phoenix Kingdom."

"For those of you who did their homework, there are two major kingdoms on this world, the Secranea Kingdom and the Phoenix Kingdom. The two are constantly in conflict," he sighed, "In your stay here, your work will be mostly in keeping them from killing one another. Their idiotic ideological squabbles may have done good by them in the past, but in the era of space travel and weapons capable of decimating star systems, we can hardly afford a conflict."

The map zoomed in on the red dot, showing a brick and mortar castle, very classical in style.

"The mission is a basic one: King Indratius of the Phoenix Kingdom has kidnapped the Princess Anaya of the Secranea Kingdom. He hopes to provoke an attack to cause the Galactic Federation to respond. Get her back," he brought up other holographic slides, "You operate as a neutral faction; all alliances have been thrown off as of now. You can operate this mission as you see fit, but save the princess. We will have a Heron take you out to the castle, fight through the guards and whoever else gets in your way. Any questions?"

"Yeah, how does this not count as an attack?" Captain Turkey said. "If they expect the Federation to respond to an attack by the Secranea Kingdom, wouldn't they first respond to a kidnapping of a royal official by the Phoenix Kingdom?"

"It's the Phoenix Kingdom," Lin'mp said. "This is what they do."
