Let's be weird

Journal Entry 2 embedding audio file... name=Deep Blue, source=Megaman Zero 4 I looked down at the water's surface from the Jet. It was my job to dive in, while Eli investigated the surface of the planet. This suit, my spear, the Magic Blaster, everything was designed to keep me safe. So this would be a piece of cake... right? I jumped. The water smashed straight into me, jarring the suit. The buoyancy on its own felt odd, since normally when I go swimming, I get wet, ya know. Anyway, deeper inside I found a small gate that sent me into a different area. The first thing I saw was a huge scuba mask. I lurched back in surprise. Then I realized it was just a fish. Still, just to be safe, I activated my suit's magic blaster for the first time. Oops. The barrel was letting water inside. With a small burst of magic I forced the water back out, causing a blast of water pressure that slammed into the fish, apparently killing it. Okay, so that would be my attack down here for now. Further down, I caught sight of a row of anemones with eyes, more scuba fish, and a giant frog. For a moment I reasoned they'd leave me alone and tried the pacifist approach--only to have a fish slam straight into my suit. I used the attack from before to wipe it out, then continued on to destroy the other underwater creatures. The bottom rose sharply ahead, so eventually I moved up to the surface. A knight half my size rose to greet me with a precisely thrown cutter. Parrying with my spear, I followed up with a blast of magic. The two-barrelled weapon was working perfectly above water, propelling my rocky projectiles like a cannon. There were more anemones up here, too. Apparently they can live above water. Anyway, as I was firing at them, the ground below shattered, and I slipped into another watery passage. It was infested with more enemies, but I dared not go near the black ones that looked like mines. The path curved back up above the surface yet again. Another cutter-throwing knight challenged me and I carefully aimed my blaster--smack! The pain of impact shot up my arm. I held it for a moment, looking down at the culprit. A coconut had fallen from the tree, disabling the magic blaster. Letting the arm rest, I sliced the knight with my spear and continued on. The best way to describe the next minute or so would be "island-hopping." The native creatures swarmed around me and I just kept dashing ahead. Outrun them, I thought to myself. Or else something or other is going to be killed for it. I spotted another of those gates behind a cannon. I glanced back at it as I passed, but it was the most primitive thing I had ever seen, with a huge trailing fuse. Inside the next gate, I gaped at where I was standing: inside a huge air bubble. This otherwise completely flooded cave was filled with them, and sea stars littered the murky water. It was getting dark further ahead, so I switched my visor to nightvision and continued on through the winding passage, swimming one second and running the next, the line between air and water beginning to blur. Further on, I found that the cave was strewn with unopened food supplies. I took note of this as I swam upward, beating the aquatic creatures back with my spear. Yet another gate. I fell through to a colorful platform surrounded by stars. I smiled for a moment: This is just the sort of thing you'd find around Popstar. I was roused from my thoughts by a huge mace flying at me. I jumped over it and skewered its thrower with no trouble, then dropped down to another platform. My next opponent carried a huge axe, and when I lunged with my spear he pushed back and I fell tumbling backward. Trying again, I planted my feet and attacked again, but still slipped back. The third time, he gave way as the spearpoint cracked through his skull. After I passed through the next gate, I saw four gold-armed knights up ahead. I stepped forward slowly, fencing the first one with my spear until I found a weakness and spun it around, smacking it in the face, then whirled the weapon back and struck it full-on. The other three hesitated at this, giving me enough time to leap forward and harpoon them all, one by one. "Man, I haven't had such tough work in a while," I sighed. Ahead, it would have been a dead end, but the floor appeared to have been smashed through. I dropped down the shaft and turned around to see what was unmistakably an imitation of Meta Knight, though without a cape. His body was green and his mask white, and he was just trying to get back up the shaft. I readied for a battle when he said to me, "You know, I was hoping that when someone noticed me, they could help me get up and out of here. I've been in here for far too long." "Sorry, I have to keep going deeper in here," I explained. "This area is a dead end--there's another passage above here, but I can't get to it like this." I sighed. "Fine." The little guy jumped onto my shoulders as I engaged the boosters on the suit (as my wings weren't free to use). On the way back, I asked him, "So who are you, anyway?" "Me? I am known as Frob. But I fear we have little time for introductions, so I'll cut to the chase: when you've returned through this gate, dive into the water. You'll find another one. Then you'll need to navigate the maze, and after that..." he trailed off. "After that?" I asked. Behind the gate another axefighter stood lurking... "After that--" he cut off as the enemy leapt out and tackled him, hacking with the axe. "Run!" he managed, coughing up blood. Without a thought I made one giant stride into the water and rushed through the gate, swimming for my life. The current pushed me along further and I kept my lancepoint extended ahead of me, impaling what ever sealife got in my way. The passages blurred until I wasn't sure of the difference anymore. Suddenly I washed straight out into open air. Regaining my strength, I staggered through this cavern filled with brightly glowing crystals that allowed me to switch my visor to normal vision again. More food supplies sat around in here with no explanation. Of course, those knights and such probably had to eat... but most of them were dead now. One last gate led to a long wooden bridge. Knowing these environments I guessed it was a collapsing one, and ran at it full speed. A few seconds later the truth hit me... in the form of a huge whale. I lay on the floor for a moment, looking at its dark blue coloring and the pipe sticking comically out of its mouth. And I was being beaten by this? I jumped up and struck out at it with my spear, but its huge face was barely scratched and slammed into me again. This time it pinned me down and I was stuck under its huge weight, the suit luckily taking most of it. I began sending out an SOS signal, hoping Eli could help me. Just then, my visor informed me that Eli was sending out an SOS signal himself. Great. Now we're both in trouble. Just then the whale jumped away, snapping at something. It was ComAK! How it had made it in without being short-circuited, I didn't know, and I frankly didn't care. The whale was distracted, and that was good enough for me. I continued along the bridge. Finally, the one last gate took me out. I saw the sun setting and the stars rising out there. I recognized the Aqualiss Fountain of Dreams nearby and sat in its waters for a moment. It was a rather odd feeling... like a hot tub, combined with a massage. I spaced out for quite a while. When I got up I not only felt refreshed, but my suit was apparently in perfect condition. "The Fountain of Dreams," I said to myself. "It's more powerful than they think, isn't it?" I examined the area around me. Bright, colorful... there was just one thing out of place. What was that laptop doing over there? What was that laptop doing in this dimension? Inside, I hoped the answer wasn't what I thought it was. Still, I picked it up, as this was a vital clue. I tossed it casually into my humongous hammerspace and went back to the bridge room. The area had completely caved in. No sign of the whale, or of ComAK. I was alone. It occurred to me that I had never before felt so attached to a non-living being, certainly not one I had only known for a few days. Suddenly one of the rocks burst apart, and the little robot climbed out. "Enemy target defeated. Regrouping with ally Ein." I smiled. "Great work, ComAK. Now, come on, we have to go find Eli." "Roger." |
