Official: David Tennant Leaving DW After TV Specials

General TV Series NewsOctober 29, 2008
• Posted By Shaun Lyon

David Tennant will be leaving Doctor Who at the conclusion of the 2009 specials currently in production, the actor announced live on stage this evening at the National Television Awards.

The Guardian newspaper this evening broke the story prematurely, reporting on their website (in a report subsequently pulled down) that Tennant is "vacating the TARDIS and leaving the BBC's Doctor Who series at the end of next year. Tennant's decision brings to an end his popular four-year tenure as the time lord." The article went on to say that the BBC had confirmed that the actor "would complete the filming of four special episodes to be screened this year and in early 2010, as well as 2009's Christmas special."

The BBC Doctor Who website has now posted the full news: "I've had the most brilliant, bewildering and life changing time working on Doctor Who. I have loved every day of it," the actor says. "It would be very easy to cling on to the TARDIS console forever and I fear that if I don't take a deep breath and make the decision to move on now, then I simply never will. ... I'm still the Doctor all next year but when the time finally comes I'll be honoured to hand on the best job in the world to the next lucky git - whoever that may be." Tennant added that he "always thought the time to leave would be in conjunction with Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner who have been such a huge part of it all for me. Steven Moffat is the most brilliant and exciting writer, the only possible successor to Russell and it was sorely tempting to be part of his amazing new plans for the show. I will be there, glued to my TV when his stories begin in 2010." He furthermore says that he feels "very privileged to have been part of this incredible phenomenon, and whilst I'm looking forward to new challenges I know I'll always be very proud to be the Tenth Doctor." Says Russell T Davies, "I've been lucky and honoured to work with David over the past few years - and it's not over yet, the Tenth Doctor still has five spectacular hours left! After which, I might drop an anvil on his head. Or maybe a piano. A radioactive piano. But we're planning the most enormous and spectacular ending, so keep watching!"

Says the BBC News site, Tennant is quoted as saying, "I love this part, and I love this show so much that if I don't take a deep breath and move on now I never will, and you'll be wheeling me out of the Tardis in my bath chair." Tennant also says, "I think it's better to go when there's a chance that people might miss you, rather than to hang around and outstay your welcome," he said.

Tennant will appear in this year's Christmas special, as well as four specials being produced for 2009 and 2010 airdates by executive producers Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner. Tennant confirmed to BBC News that the four specials for 2009/2010 will be "the four last stories that I do." New incoming executive producer Steven Moffat will then take over the series with new leads as the show returns for a normal, fifth series of episodes in 2010.

More details as they come in...

This really sucks, but at the same time I can't disagree with the man's rationality. Best leave when you'll be missed, then stick around past your welcome.

At the same time, Tennant really was my Doctor. He's the one I really got into Who with, so I will miss him. I can only hope his exit is handled in spectacular fashion. If any Doctor deserves to go out with a bang, it's Tennant.

I think it has more to do.. and rightly so... with not wanting to be forever seen AS the Doctor in his professional career. Tennant is an extremely talented actor, and I think he has ambitions beyond stage (into the big screen) If he stayed for much longer, he would forever be seen only as the Doctor and it would complicate his ability to preform or be accepted elsewhere, which would be a shame.

I support his decision, though I wish he would have done just one more season. I am very interested to see who they use next!

Actually, i more see him as his character in the Harry Potter movies and don't think keeping this role a little longer would jeapardize his marketability. After losing the actor before this one after just one season, i was looking forward to keeping this one for a while!

Yay! Doctor Who is back in April with new stars, old enemies

Quote:

Are you ready for the new Who? The U.S. will finally get to see Matt Smith, the youngest Doctor ever and the 11th incarnation, as Doctor Who returns on BBC America, the network announced today. The BAFTA-winning drama will make its U.S. premiere on Saturday, April 17, not long after the U.K. broadcast.

"Britain has a tradition of reinventing its iconic characters, like James Bond and Sherlock Holmes—and Doctor Who," Richard De Croce, senior vice president, programming, of BBC America, said in the official announcement (below). "In introducing the Eleventh Doctor, writer Steven Moffat is opening the show to a whole new audience, while serving fans with an exciting mix of inter galactic, time travelling adventures. We can't wait to meet his new Doctor!"

The popular British series has become BBC America's highest-rated series ever. This season will be 13 episodes long, with new lead actors and a new creative team led by executive producer Moffat, who takes over for Russell T Davies, the guy who resurrected Who for modern audiences. Smith takes over the role of the Doctor from David Tennant and plays the 11th Time Lord. He also has a new traveling companion in the "enigmatic" Amy Pond, played by Karen Gillan.

Smith's Doctor and Amy will travel through space and time in the TARDIS and explore sixteenth-century Venice, 1890s France and the United Kingdom, which becomes a nation floating in space in the far future.

The first two episodes of the new season, "The Eleventh Hour" and "The Beast Below," were written by Moffat. The third episode brings back an old enemy in "Victory of the Daleks," which was written by Gatiss.

Guest stars this season include SAG Award winner Alex Kingston (ER), Oscar nominee Sophie Okonedo (The Secret Life of Bees) and Tony Curran (24).

BAFTA award winner Moffat replaces Russell T Davies behind the scenes. He's written some of the show's most critically acclaimed episodes, including "Blink," "The Empty Child" and "The Doctor Dances." Other writers for the new season include Richard Curtis (Love Actually), Chris Chibnall (Torchwood), Toby Whithouse (Being Human), Mark Gatiss (Sherlock) and Simon Nye (Men Behaving Badly).
Graystone: D&D/FR, Dwarf Psion (Shaper) 6
Lam: D&D/FR, Changeling Wizard (Changeling Wizard) 6
Queth: Pathfinder, Elf (Tower Elf) Bard (Archivist) 1

Speaking of a New Doctor...

A little Preview of Matt's Doctor in action.

Frankly, I love him. Tennant's playfulness with a major touch of vanity. (And yes, he does flash a Library Card with Hartenel's picture on it)

Through the Magic of the Internet, I've managed to see Matt Smith's newest outing as The Doctor - "The Eleventh Hour".

A brief summary:

Little Amy Pond is a lonely orphan, who's bothered by the crack the wall in her room. She hears voices coming from it. One night, while asking Santa to do something about the crack, she might have gotten her wish granted...as a mysterious Blue Box crashes in her backyard.

Little does Amy Pond realize, what follows is an adventure that spans not just space, but Time itself.

Matt Smith as the Doctor: Brilliant casting. Simply brilliant. He has his own flair to the role, and unlike Tennant - who played an Old Man in a Young Man's body - Smith brings to the role a manic, youthful energy befit a newborn Time Lord.

His companion, Amy, is fair in her role. She seems to have Donna's take charge impulsive attitude, but I'm not going to lie: I'm going to miss Kathrine Tate's presence far more then David Tennant's. Donna didn't bring as much baggage to the role as Amy is.

Well, with this sort of thing there is no "Safe". Just look up Doctor Who "The Eleventh Hour" Torrent in any Search Engine and you'll likely find a place to see it.

Last I heard it was even up on YouTube.
