I need a vacation. Won't be able to get one for months, but I was wondering if anybody out there can reccomend something on a budget. I guess 'budget' is somewhat vague and subjective, but give it a go, anyhow. I won't be going anywhere anytime soon, but if I can plan something now, I'll have something to look forward to and that'll be cool. Thanks, all. :)

My favorite places are right here at the Jersey Shore, and i also love Niagara Falls.

The beaches are clean sand and clean water, with lots of water sports, and we have both the bay and the ocean, and lots of stuff to do from fishing/crabbing, to water sports, to Six Flags Great Adventure, to the boardwalks and rides, to the bars and nightlife. Atlantic City is 75 minutes south of here, so you have the casinos for gambling and shows.

I've been to Niagara Falls six times, easily, if not more. The falls have a tremendous amount of energy that is beautiful to look at and recharges my batteries. The Canadian side is fantastic because the views of OUR falls are gorgeous. Lots of shops on both sides for souvenirs, also Ripley's Believe It or Not kind of attractions, and restaurants of all kinds. At the park there are several places where you can just park and walk around, picnic, explore... be careful where you step, there aren't a lot of fences up. :lol

Of course, if you have money, you can go for Cancun or Hawaii or such... ;)

I grew up around beaches, so I could care less about them. Mostly. The falls don't sound bad, though. I've been up near there, drove through Buffalo on my way to Plattsburgh, but didn't stop anywhere on the route to see the falls. Maybe that'd work. I've got a ways to go before I can go. But I still wanted to plan.

And no, I don't have any money. not much, anyhow.

:p join the crowd! :p

Most of the places i head for involve water. But another one i loved was Chicago. It's a beautiful city, with bridges across the canal, funky places to explore and shop, museums, universities, restaurants, and you gotta try the Chicago-style pizza, which has a cornmeal base under the crust for extra flavor and texture.

i was lucky enough to be in a highrise hotel overlooking the water during their Fourth of July celebrations. That was fun.

I took my sons to Washington, DC two summers ago. Now THAT was a trip! The co$t of the hotel is directly related to how close you are to the White House, so if you can spend some time travelling to whatever you want to see for the day (or take the Underground, which is an experience in itself) it's less expensive. Besides the hotel, the expenses aren't bad. Wear broken-in, comfortable sneakers; you will be walking ALL day.

We even went looking for the 12-foot model of the original Starship Enterprise, which Roddenberry had donated to the Smithsonian. We found it in a basement souvenir shop, along with 20 or 30 books about the series (not novels). That, and the Air and Space museum were easily the highlights for all of us, lol. We'd love to go again.

The week of Labor Day, there's a great State Fair in Syracuse, New York. Exhibits, fancy animals and farm animals vying for prizes, an International Food Court (you can find anything from Tempura to Baklava to pizza for lunch). You can buy quilts and home made honey and beeswax products, one-of-a-kind items, Chinese woks, vibrating chairs, microfiber cloths... you name it!

Then there are the rides and amusements and sideshow, car races, demolition derby, and some real headliners in the music section (GooGoo Dolls, Def Lepard, Brooks & Dunn, Rascal Flatts, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Boston & Styx, Eddie Money...)
