"I am quite aware. The sensation of the scans are... unique." As she spoke, tentacles like anemonies rose up around her back and leg, their flowing tentacles covered with a soothing sting that numbed the areas where the cybernetics connected. Small, delicate glass-like shrimp crawled out, and with deft precision began to slice in quick and smooth motions at the flesh and circuits.

The work had begun...

Hunk rested his hands on his hips. "...Water, can you show in a separate display what you're doing? A workable knowledge of your cybernetics would be more than helpful in future..."

Water created a shimmering panel of fluid in front of Hunk, which showed displays and models of the new limbs and microsurgeries being performed. The sheer complexity was mindboggling.

Time passed as the Waters of Life did their job.

Keith and the Princess received the reports from Lance and Pidge, confirming that the other camps across Arus' small globe were empty. The Green lion was the first to return late that evening, having made the world trip at speeds multiple times the speed of sound. The Red lion was slated to return after midnight.

Hunk was bleary eyed as dinnertime came. The nannites had finished their job. Merla was under a minor sedation that had her sleeping peacefully on the bed. Her leg had been rebuilt completely, as had the cybernetics in her spine. No longer were they the obvious inorganic shapes of the Drule technology, but now they were smooth, organic, translucent in several areas showing spindly wires pumping blood and other fluids through them. Her leg seemed almost a piece of artwork.

The cybernetics were equivalent to what she had previously, merely altered in shape and form. The safety devices that had allowed the Drule to inject her with excruciating pain at whim were removed, as were any monitoring devices. To the Drule, it would have appeared she... died.

Hunk, Pidge, Keith, Allura, Nani, Sven, and Coran met for dinner. The news of Pidge's discovery, as well as the report on what had transpired with Merla in their minds. Meanwhile, Merla had been moved back to the holding cell, still asleep.

[What about Sven Roady?]

***State Room***

There was probably a 'proper' dining hall somewhere in the Palace, designed to seat dozens if not hundreds but this smallish room was fine for a few friends and confidants. In truth Keith wasn't sure where he fell in this whole mess, things were just perpetually tipping off to one side or the other leaving him little time to consider such things. However when he did try to consider it he realized it didn't really matter, friends or allies of convenience they were all stuck with each other for the time being.

He was picking at his food, it was probably tasty but he had no appetite, the stress of the past few days and the news leaving everything bland and tasteless. He ate, though, intellectually he knew his body MUST have been running low on biological energy and he'd need the power to think straight and deal with what was to come. He sighed, "so what do you want to do Princess?"

Sleep for a week was the reply that came immediately to Allura's waery mind, but that was hardly what anyone needed to hear aloud right now, herself included.

"Intelligence," she replied, then elaborated. "Sven is getting a small ground security force trained, with the help of Hunk and the suits of armor and weapons he and his den are completing. We have foraging parties gathering supplies. We know we have the Lions, combined or individually, to deal with the next monstrosity they hurl at us. What we don't know is what or when they will try anything."

She sighed, pushing her barely touched plate of food away from her. "If we could get a few more of those satelites working we may be able to have some sort of early warning system in place, which could prove invaluable."

Keith nodded, it was all very sensible, but really just slapping a bandaid on a ruptured jugular, the thought was nice but it wouldn't mean anything in the short run. He forced himself to ingest another mouthful.

"I can take the black lion up and look for satellites, they may have simply drifted out of place over the years ad even if they're in operable we can probably use them for parts to make new ones or other materials. Once hunk gets the other lions outfitted for Space we'll have five vehicles and even Volt'ron for outer-atmosphere defense and reconnaissance."

He took a long draw of the mildly alcoholic beverage they'd been served and another mouthful of food, deliberately eating it despite the bitter taste creeping across his pallet. "None of that, however, solves the real problem, any of them. I hate to be the one to bring up bad news at the diner table but we've all seen the readings. Aurus is dieing, we have months at most, the Drule don't need to send more monsters to wipe us out, they can just sit back and watch. To say nothing of the missing Arusians."

He let that hang a bit, it had to be said, they couldn't pretend that good wishes and small deeds would save the planet or people. He still felt contacting the Garrison and relocating the Aurusians was the best bet but he knew no one wanted that and he felt biased for thinking that way given his background. "Maybe Merla knows what happened to the other camps."

"Maybe," mused Allura. "But that is irrelevant for the moment. The Arusians not on the planet are a concern, but unfortunately one that we have no control over right now. Our priorities should be what is here and in front of us. That means the Arusians who are here. That means finding a way to prepare for future attacks, and that means communication. The satellites can be used for that, I hope. Perhaps Hunk and Nani working together could get the deep-space transmitter working. You could contact your people and arrange for transport home, but I do not think that they'd get here before we have to deal with the Drule again. The Drule do not strike me as patient waiters with a siege mentality. And they seem to want the weapons technology of the Lions. I do not intend to let them have it. And I imagine that means that they will try to take it, hence the priority of an early warning system. Merla may be useful for information, though. She certainly has reason to hate the Drule, that's for certain."

She blanked out for a moment, imagining yet again that she had made the choice Merla had made. The very thought sent shudders of revulsion through her that were hopefully interpreted by her fellow diners as a mild shiver.

Keith nodded, he knew the black lion had a decent storage compartment and that communications satellites were actually relatively small, he could probably carry one or two up, recreating the aurus sensor net shouldn't take long. "If hunk can get the yellow den to make new satellites and Nani can tell me where the old ones were we can get a close-range early warning system up rather quickly."

The captain leaned back thenm his mind leaping from point-to-point on issues that needed addressing, they had an experienced pilot down and doing little, that had to change. "Hunk, when you get back to the yellow Den see what it's files have in the way of atmosphere or extra-atmosphere fighter craft. Sven can't fly a lion, that doesn't mean we can't get him a 'bird' and with that new arm creating a new interface should be easy."

He could, theoretically ask the Dens to make tanks, weapon emplacements and the like too, but as near as he could tell his team were the only combat capable people on the planet so doing such thing would be a waste of time and resources, teach them how to use a gun first, then worry about heavy armor.

"Pidge, between green and blue den go over all our data from the prison camp we liberated. In with all of that you should have life readings on the prisoners, especially you. Use that to create a list of medicines we need and if the dens can handle it synthesize it. No sense in taking everyone into the Blue den in groups of four if all they need is two weeks of multi vitamins and a glass of milk."

'While you're at it find our replacements,' thought the captain but that he didn't share, after all they might not live long enough to worry about that.

He hadn't touched his food in a bit and looked to it, his face souring. "This is more food than most of the aursians have seen in two decades, it would be a sin not to clean the plate."

Almost eagerly he ate, quickly ingesting what was st before him like a soldier packing in calories before the next battle, and in a way he probably was. "Speaking of breaking things down we still have a drule carrier parked on our door-step. Might as well pull that apart and melt it down since it will no longer be of use to us in transporting arusians from the other camps. No sense putting all those guns and that armor to waste when the dens can use it to reequip us or the castle."

Keith leaned back, plate cleared and pondering where he could get a toothbrush from. "Hmm, I have to check the dens and see if they were able to absorb the energy from the robotic-beast we slew yesterday and if that added power helps at all in the aspect of restoring aurus."

He blinked, "Princess, are there any other inhabited or habitable planets in this system?"

He was honestly surprised he hadn't considered it sooner, and even if the planets were dieing they might still be of use...

Hunk had become conspicuously quiet after Merla was mentioned. He knew it was a smart idea to seek her view of what might have happened to the Arusians, but he felt it would go dark places fast. That, and he was hiding from himself how sad he'd been to go to dinner instead of walking her back to her cell. He knew that was a bit much, and it was making him doubt his judgment around her. That and the guards that might've been killed for his thoughtlessness earlier...

"...We know the various sanctuaries can combine their efforts in various ways. I think we just need to find the right commands and tools, and they may well be able to save the planet," he muttered almost to himself. More loudly, he announced, "We're still weeks away from space-readiness with all the lions, and while most of the repairs are done, we're still far from full strength with the lions. Having a place to run to might not be a bad idea..."

Pidge spoke up, "Save the planet... Hey, you know I looked at the flooring in the Tree of Life. It looks like some kind of weird wooden tile, but in the raised areas, you can see that each piece is a... well... column of what looks like seeds... If they're all like that... Well, there's gotta be enough seed to plant the entire planet."

Lance frowns, "Almost like one of those doomsday vaults."

"What?" Pidge scratches his head.

"Doomsday Vaults. The Earth made one around the turn of the millennium. Basically, you make a storage area deep where anything cataclysmic might not reach it. You fill it with seed... dna samples..."

Keith nodded as he rose. "Of course if the soil is not capable of nurrishing those seeds and the planets instability causes the atmosphere to thin or bleed off into space when the em envelope dissipates then it won't matter how many seeds we have will it? We need to make sure the foundation, the bedrock of survival is still here first, all other considerations are secondary in comparison."

At that he looked to Allura, "is there anything else princess, otherwise we should all get to work doing what we can..."

"Agreed," Allura responded, somewhat distractedly, but no less firmly. "We do what we can..."

As the meal ended and individuals began filing out, she spoke up, "Coran, could you wait for just a moment?"

Coran nodded as the others got up, "Certainly Princess."

Meanwhile Lance grabbed Keith's shirt as he was leaving the dining room, "Hey, Keith. Something you said in there..." Keith shrugged, "Yeah?"

Lance's brow furroughed as he thought, "Well, the planet's ecosystem is collapsing... sure. But what makes an ecosystem?"

Keith shook his head,"I'm not getting you..."

Lance frowns, "Dirt is just minerals ground up... atmosphere is just gasses... the planet's liquids are water..."

"What's your point?" Keith was getting a headache.

"My point is, it seems that each of the dens in some way can synthesize these materials. My Den can combine and construct a seemingly endless amount of raw materials... and I think it uses some kind of... pull... I don't know... transport... to pull those minerals from another source. The Waters of life seems to control water itself, and can redistrubute those waters.... Your black lion seems to control the very atmosphere in some manner... We know the ancient Arusians built the lions as the last line of defense. What if they also built the Dens to... rebuild?"

Hunk had been lost in thought, actually. One of the last to leave for his continued duties (he had a strong urge to go check on Merla and make sure the new prosthetics were working), he overheard Keith and Lance talking.

Rebuild...

Sand had told him early on, how the sanctuaries used each other's resources to work together and craft, function, and stabilize each other.

Hunk twisted on his heal, and walked right up to Keith and Lance. They both saw the look on his face. With no attempt at decorum or politeness, he just blurted out, "Of course we can use them to rebuild! They have fully integrated systems! We just have to figure out how to get them to initiate the protocols! Well... maybe we have to write the protocols, but they capacity is there! We're churning out armaments for an army and fabricating industrial-level machinery, growing food for hundreds without a strain on our resources! I bet... they just need a delivery system! Signal pods or something, to get the dens to start expanding and processing their full capacity!"

Exactly how much he was paying attention to his captain and comrade was difficult to determine now that he had ideas brewing.

Keith rolled his eyes as an amused smile twisted his lips. "We don't need probes or sensor posts, just Voltron. The dens magnify the world, the lions magnify the dens and Voltron magnifies the lions. It's magic really, I have no clue where the extra power comes from but we've all experienced it for ourselves haven't we?"

Keith shrugged, "but that still leaves the Drule to contend with, honestly I don't want to start fixing things until they're gone otherwise we jkust give them a reason to stick around and keep attacking us, if hey think we're just content to die here they might just let us. Still going to need those satellites to watch the sky then."
