I'm really liking Peter Capaldi's take on The Doctor. Reminds me a lot of my favorite Doctor, the Seventh one, Sylvester McCoy. |

I had a few issues with tonight’s ep ("Kill the Moon"), though most were addressed when Clara (RIGHTLY) called The Doctor out on things. But one thing still bothers me. The Doctor said that that moment — letting the Moon-Egg hatch and the creature be born — is what rekindled humanity’s interest in space, in exploration, and lead to them going off world and expanding out and out and surviving until the end of time. And it was all because they looked up in wonder at something beautiful. Except that’s not what humanity did. They shut off all the lights on Earth, indicating they wanted to blow up the Moon-Egg and kill the creature inside. They didn’t look up in wonder or awe, they were afraid and murderous. (Unless all the lights went out b/c they were all trying to leave their lights on — indicating they wanted to save the creature — but the power went out because the local power grids couldn’t handle the increased strain, thus making it appear that they shut all their lights off. Though, if that were the case, you’d think that would be pointed out in the show.) |

Wow, how'd I miss this thread? ![]() Sylvester McCoy was a real oddball on the series. A highly trained comic going back to Vaudeville days, he brought a great sense of comic timing and buffoonery along with a tragic vulnerability along with the Doctor's innate knowledge of the universe. He wasn't my favorite, but he was really cool. I met him once when he came to the States to promote the series; friends and I went to a Philly PBS station to man the telephones for a fundraiser, and got to spend hours with him and Ace, his companion. (Wow, did the cameras love her face.) His quick wit and unselfconscious manner made him an instant hit, climbing on the desks and wrapping phone cords around himself, and the fundraiser was a good one. What made him your fave, Doc? |
