Has anyone read The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins? It's a dystopic Sci/Fi-Fantasy novel. The main character is Katniss Everdeen; a fiery character who is deadly with a bow(sound like anyone we might have read of in FR?). Katniss is one of 24 Tributes from 12 Districts chosen for the annual Hunger Games of Panem. It is combat to the death until there is only one contestant left. The book has a lot of action along with good characterization. I know it's in the Teen/Young Adult section of the library or book store. However, this is a book that all ages can enjoy. |

So... 23 contestants die in this competition? And it's meant for Young Adults? That's interesting... It sounds a little like that Stephen King short story where all the youngsters entered a walking contest where you walk till you drop (at which point you get shot and killed) until Last One Standing and his family (in a desperate society) have their needs taken care of (free house and food, i think?) for the rest of their lives. What's the deal about this book? Tell me more... |

The 24 Tributes in The Hunger Games must forage and compete in an artificial wilderness setting. The novel is very grim in some places. The main characters are teens. I liked the characterizations. There are some characters that you think will be there only as superficial caricatures. The author ends up surprising you in that area. The novel is being made into a movie. |

I keep meaning to pick this up. My friend's brother and his wife both told me I should read them! |

I picked up the trilogy for Christmas and have gotten through the first book and am carving through the second. So far I like them very much, the author is magnificent at carving a scene and evoking emotions. Actually makes me worry for the movie as it will be SO hard to convey everything that's going through Katniss skull on the silver screen. |
