This is a preview of A Game of Thrones from George RR Martin's A Song of Fire and Ice Series. It starts on HBO on April 17. I'm anticipating this almost as much as the new Transformers movie. It has one of my favorite actors; Sean Bean. |

...Sean Bean plays Ned Stark?! Well, being on HBO I'm not going to be able to watch the show as it airs, but Sean Bean alone makes it a "Must" purchase when it hits DVD. It helps A Game Of Thrones is my favorite book, so I'm very interested in this. The scenes they show seem very faithful to the book. Who knows. Maybe a TV Show will inspire Martin to get off his rear and get on with the story. |

The next book is supposed to come out in mid July. I'll believe it when I have the book in my hand. |

Regardless, this show looks very neat, great casting and some very nice production values. I'm definitely looking forward to it. That brief scene with Sansa and Joffrey gave me chills. Whoever they cast for Joffrey, I can already tell the kid is going to be good. Just a brief second and he sells the role completely. |

Yes, that actor who played Joffrey only had a few seconds of screen time and sold the role as you said. I am keeping my fingers crossed for good execution of this series by HBO. The author, GRRM, seems on board so to speak. |

I'd only ask that you read the series in order. $20 is a very good price for the series. The library route may also be good option because you can see if this is your type of epic. I only say this because I had been talking up this series with two friends who have similar tastes to my own in literature. One really liked it and took advantage of that deal on Amazon. The other was left cold. It was a sort of "What's all the shouting about?", type of reaction. In the first three of the series, there is great characterization AND plot development. The Battle of the Blackwater sequence in A Clash of Kings was worth that book alone for me. I, like many readers fell in love with Tyrion Lannister, Jon Snow, and Daenyreus Targarean. Tyrion is a particular favorite of mine because he goes against every fantasy type and is successful in that milieu. There is much ambiguity as well. The good guys make such bone headed decisions because of emotional occlusion that it brings on more havoc than an evil wizard summoning a fleet of angry Ring Wraiths. When you read of the so called bad guys they're not Snidely Whiplash mustache twirlers. The only unequivocally evil character in this series Spoiler: click to toggle is a minor one. The problems with the series is that in books IV(A Feast For Crows) and book V( A Dance with Dragons) the plot comes to a screeching halt. Another consideration, GRRM is sadistic with some of his characters as well Spoiler: click to toggle . Then there is the length between books. For myself, I'm willing to grant GRRM a pass on the first and third parts because I'm curious to see if the fair princess will win the Kingdom of Westeros with her Dragons and how she will go about it. GRRM is also a good enough writer so you can skip areas that you consider objectionable and not lose the plot. |

You certainly make the series sound interesting! i found A Clash of Kings and A Feast for Crows in my local second-hand bookstore, so that helps greatly in jumping in with both feet and not worrying about the pricetag. Not thrilled with sadism however... RASalvatore tried that in his most recent Drizzt book Gauntlgrym and it was absolutely unnecessary to spell it out in that much detail just so we'd understand what his new character had gone through to make her wierd and flakey. I'll probably read those parts anyway, to see what the author was trying to convey, but it doesn't mean i'll cheer him on. There are more books to come in the series? I wonder if he'll lose his audience with the 'screeching halt' of his plot... oh, well. When i'm done with all the Elminster books i'll give these a try! |

I would advise starting with A Game of Thrones before reading A Clash of Kings. Then read A Storm of Swords and follow that with A Feast for Crows. Game of Thrones and Storm of Swords are both available in most public libraries. The good news is that Winds of Winter will probably be out by the time you finish the first five installments. Sort of like the Wheel of Time series. |

LOL you're probably right... that was the fun of the Drizzt books! by the time i noticed the series there were a TON of books to read, and i went through them one right after the other. it was great to immerse myself in that world for so long, and watch the changes to the characters and to the author's writing style a i went along. it was great to do it that way! Are you recommending that i read the books in order? Thrones - Kings - Swords - Crows - Winter? |

Yes, absolutely read them in order. Like LOTR the first 3 books are in actual sequence. So you would start with Game, then Kings, Swords, Crows, and to the latest installment A Dance with Dragons. As for the Winds of Winter well that's coming Hopefully the next installment won't take six years in the making.I did notice with Ed Greenwood's Elminster and RA Salvatore's Drizzt each individual book can stand on its own and the reader can stay up to speed. I did however, want to start at the first books. Both series show character and writer development I would liken GRRM's A song of Ice and Fire to the WotSQ series. Starting with a random book would cause confusion; at least for me. |

Have you tried the public library? I know that with the HBO series, there could be a waiting list. Another good web site besides Amazon is Barnes and Noble. If all else fails I can send you a copy. |
