My life has been rich, my life has been empty. The times that were the best were filled with music, and i am ever grateful for that. i am one of those people who can hear a song and immediately be transported to the time when the song was first important to me; i'll get a far off feeling and the world around me dissolves as i let it take me back to the feelings, the sights, the very mindset of another time lost in my life, but still accessible if i only let the music start, even if only in my head... Man's Road from the movie The Last Unicorn, sung by America. Early 1980's "For in my heart i carry such a heavy load; here i am on Man's road..." Hey, the Lady Amalthea and i have a lot in common. For i am the last... Mockingbird by Carly Simon and James Taylor. This century. "Now, everybody! Have you heard? He's gonna buy me a mockingbird!" Oh, this one is such fun. The guy who runs the local karaoke machine on Wednesday nights at the local watering hole has promised he'll learn the song so we can sing it as a duet. i can't wait! Turn Around, Look At Me by The Vogues. 1960's or '70's "There is someone walking behind you; turn around, look at me. There is someone to love and guide you; turn around, look at me!" Wow, this is an old one. i remember singing along with the radio when i was young, and my mother would pretend to bury her nose in a book, but we both know she was always listening. She told me this was not particularly a love song in her interpretation; it was God whispering. i still miss her at times --she died when i was only 20-- but at least we got to know each other as adults and had some interesting discussions before she was gone. Sunshine by Jonathan Edwards. For some reason, this one always stuck with me as being a song i would sing if i landed in the ST:TNG universe, lol. "He can't even run his own life; i'll be damned if he'll run mine!" Ah, i have a rich imagination. Thank you for that, God. I Know Him So Well from the Broadway musical 'Chess'. Hey, the title says it all. Hold On, My Heart by Phil Collins/Genesis. Early 2000 This is the first song that Blue dances to with the love she will lose all too soon. i find songs often help me shape my stories. Nice! Right Here Waiting for You by Richard Marx. 1999 Okay, i admit it. i made an online Casenova-type asshole crazy one night when he started romancing me (he went after ALL the girls, no matter their age, lol) and i embarrassed the hell out of him by telling him *swoon* that i had chosen our song... and then sent him a photo of the ugliest woman i could find on short notice and asked when he would meet me. He even put us in a group chat with another guy as referee to cool things off and i thought the ref would die from laughter when he realized the joke (he knew what i really looked like). i must have stayed up till five in the morning digging into that Lame Lover. LMAO those were good times... Groovin' by The Young Rascals. mid-seventies This song was a mega-hit. i remember my much-older brother came home from the service with a new wife and we borrowed a canoe and went up a hidden stream for miles, enjoying the natural beauty. At one point we saw a summer shack near the water in the middle of the woods, and this is the song i heard playing. Now the song instantly brings me back to quiet water, dappled shade and soft breezes as we travelled a magical pathway known to few. Stuck In the Middle With You by Steely Dan? 2006 I moved to a new job about three years ago, and hit it off great with the receptionist right away. I think i'd known her less than one day before i broke into this song when we were joking about the other businesses on either side of our building, lol. Not a week went by when one or the other of us would start humming this song and we'd crack up all over again... "Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right..." Hotel California by The Eagles. 1980's "...And in The Master's chambers they gather for the feast; They stab it with their steely knives but they just can't kill the beast..." I actually had a really involved story set in the Doctor Who universe where this song was instrumental in bringing about a nightmare to one of the characters. Cool story. Well, set of stories, with a time travel twist to it, of course. i'm really proud of that one. Fly Like an Eagle Steve Miller Band. 1980's Time keeps on slippin' slippin' slippin' into the future... another of the Doctor Who universe songs. Man, i love time travel. i used to play this in the car on my way to the seashore every Friday afternoon, before i moved here. Great memories! Crackerbox Palace George Harrison. Circa late '70s "We welcome you to Crackerbox Palace..." i was working THREE part-time jobs straight out of school back in New York, and this song always caught my attention. It instantly brings up sights, smells (i worked in a dry cleaning/laundromat store with radio over the loudspeakers), and people i haven't seen in thirty years. wierd. so... what songs are important to you, and what do they make you think of?
