i got this email yesterday/Mother's Day. i wasn't aware of how the day originated...

Quote:

From Physicians for Social Responsibility:

Julia Ward Howe proposed the idea of Mother's Day for Peace over a century ago. Howe's Mother's Day Proclamation in 1870 was a call for disarmament and for women to come together to seek diplomatic ways to settle disagreements amongst nations.

You can help us reconnect with Mother's Day's original purpose and celebrate modern-day mothers who are carrying on Howe's vision by working every day to build a safer, healthier, more peaceful world for our children and future generations.

Mother's Day Proclamation 1870
By Julia Ward Howe

Arise then...women of this day!
Arise, all women who have hearts!
Whether your baptism be of water or of tears!
Say firmly:
"We will not have questions answered by irrelevant agencies,
Our husbands will not come to us, reeking with carnage,
For caresses and applause.
Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn
All that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience.
We, the women of one country,
Will be too tender of those of another country
To allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs."

From the bosom of a devastated Earth a voice goes up with
Our own. It says: "Disarm! Disarm!
The sword of murder is not the balance of justice."
Blood does not wipe out dishonor,
Nor violence indicate possession.
As men have often forsaken the plough and the anvil
At the summons of war,
Let women now leave all that may be left of home
For a great and earnest day of counsel.
Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead.
Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means
Whereby the great human family can live in peace...
Each bearing after his own time the sacred impress,
In the name of womanhood and humanity, I earnestly ask
That a general congress of women without limit of nationality,
May be appointed and held at someplace deemed most convenient
And the earliest period consistent with its objects,
To promote the alliance of the different nationalities,
The amicable settlement of international questions,
The great and general interests of peace.

This is a one-time pledge that can be fulfilled any time.

The origin of most holidays is usually for political reasons or simply traditional ceremonies being expanded into 'time off'.

Even the timing of Christmas is simply correlated to an old pagan ritual for the end of the year.

The origins fade in importance. It's what you mean with it yourself that gives the 'holiday' meaning.

The Baton Is Passed...

My older son just turned 18 this week, and HE took ME to see ST for Mother's Day, in his own car. I was so pleased... We started with me bouncing him on my knee as a toddler to the ST theme every day; he grew up on Trek. His father and i MET at a ST convention. And today my son drove me to see the latest movie.

yes, the baton is passed... ~proud sigh~
