So, my computer's been acting strange these days, and it's starting to feel it's age. It's about time to get a new rig, the only problem is, I've been so out of the loop on new hardware developments, that I'm not sure where to begin.

Currently, I'm sporting a 1.7 Ghz processor, 1 gig of RAM, and an ATI video card that was old when I bought it on sale..

I'm looking to run newer games, and have a little processing muscle for audio editing.. but I'm not looking to break the bank either. So who wants to steer me in the right direction as far as what i should reasonably be looking for. I don't need to be on the cutting edge, but it's defiantly time for an upgrade.

Of course, most Macs dual as a PC now that they're using the same Intel Processors. You can use Bootcamp, Virtual PC or Parallels on a Mac and run the PC version of Windows on it.

The only thing is, since most PC games require a specific set of components to run, I have no idea what would or won't work on the system.

I personally recommend finding someone to build the computer for you if you're looking for a decent gaming rig with the power to do most everything else. As far as specifications go, I'll give you mine that I build this past summer and does my gaming and code work.

2.53 Intel Core2 Duo Processor
2 Gig of Ram (More if you're looking for better gaming or such)
NVidia GForce 8500 GT video card (w/ 1Gig on board memory)

Its not top of the line by any means, but it only cost me about $800 to build and probably a similar model from a dealer would have costed likely around $1200 to $1500 depending on manufacturer.

Well, let's see:

Laptop (work supplied 5 years ago):
- Model: Dell Latitude D400
- CPU: 1.4 GHz Pentium M
- RAM: 1 GB
- Disk: 40GB 5400 RPM
- Screen: 12.1"
- LAN: Gigabit
- WiFi: B/G
- OS: Gentoo Linux, 2008.0 profile, 2.6.27-gentoo-r4 kernel (custom built kernel, did not use genkernel), I use Gnome as my desktop software since it has some cool laptop friendly features, like NetworkManager and gnome-power-manager (that and most apps I use are linked against gtk/gtk+/gtk#, I don't have any qt* apps, making KDE pointless).

Desktop (I built about 4 or 5 years ago):
- Model: Custom
- CPU: 3.06 GHz Socket 478 Intel Processor, 533 FSB, Hyper-Threading enabled
- RAM: 4x512MB Dual Channel Crucial PC DDR400
- MoBo: Asus P4S800D-E deluxe (Onboard 5.1 sound, 1GB LAN, USB 2.0, etc...)
- Video: ATi 9800 GT, 128MB Onboard, AGP 8X
- Disk: 2xMaxtor Diamond Plus 80GB 7200 Drives (8MB buffer) on PATA
- Power: Antec True Power 450 Watt
- Cooling: 6 80mm case fans, power supply has dual fans, CPU fan.
- CD: 1 generic DVD ROM, One Plextor DVD+- dual layer RW, both on PATA (IDE)
- OS: Windows XP SP3

I am planning on retiring my desktop to either a fresh Windows XP build and giving to my dad (who is using an OLD dell 4100 with a pentium 3 processor with a failing hard disk) if I build a new desktop, or, getting a gaming laptop from HP and turning my desktop into a Gentoo build (I used to dual boot it before my primary harddrive failed awhile back, and it was stupid fast under gentoo).

Oh, I also have a SunFire v60x (2x 2.8 Socket 478 Intel Xeon processors, 6x 512MB Ram, 2x Seagate Cheetah 10K RPM SCSI drives, 2X intel Gigabit NIC (lan), this currently has an old Solaris 10 install on it, very out of date, if I ever take the cobwebs off it and it still boots (I just dont have the power capacity in my apartment for running this, my PC, and all the other things I use without risk of blowing a breaker, which I have done without this thing plugged in), I'll probably throw ubuntu server on there with MySql and apache, or throw gentoo on it and use distcc to speed up my compile times for other systems), which was Sun Microsystem's brief flirtation with the x86 Intel architecture. They abandoned this. Ironically, Sun once again offers x86 (well, x86_64) via the SunFire series with AMD opteron processors.
