And so another New Year begins...; with quiet reflections on the past.

Once again, Cheetback sat upon the cold winter rooftop of Blue's home looking at the starry night. It wasn't the same place he sat a year ago, but it didn't stop everyone from finding their way home and celebrating the holidays below the snow covered rooftop. Yet for him, the holidays had arrived and ended before he had hardly the chance to realize they were there. The past year... well it definitely seemed to have more downs than it had ups. A year ago, he had been a married man, with a steady job making a decent wage... now he lived on the opposite side of the country, divorced, and hoping for enough work in a month to pay his bills. As far back as he could recall, it would seem it had been likely the worse year of his life. He sat there, overlooking the snow covered grounds remembering how he had hoped this time last year that the next would hold a better light, and he wiped the tears away that started to swell in his eyes.

Then he started to think back about all the good things that had come. He was no longer thousands of miles from his family, he had met friends who seemed to have been a part of his life far longer than the months he'd known them, and he had found his way back to the friends he nearly lost along with the many changes in his life. Life may have handed him lemons this past year, but hopefully in the next he'd find the sugar and would be able to make some lemonade. It will be a hard road, and he'll likely be faced with many, many hard choices, but he'd survived this far and damn it all if he was going to let it stop him now.

But for now, he just listened quietly once more to the celebrations going on in the house below and enjoyed the new view from atop the snow covered rooftop. And once again he quietly sang...

Should old acquaintances be forgot
and never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintances be forgot
and days of auld lang syne?
Oh here's a hand, my trusty friend
to take a hand of thine.
We'll take a cup of kindness yet
for days of auld lang syne.

A couple of floors below him, the party lived on with much merriment and tomfoolery and food and drink, friends all, the new and the old. But Blue had known more than her fair share of uncertainty, loneliness and pain in the long years of her life, and she had come to know what was important. She quietly slipped out the back door again and, listening, took wing in the still night.

"I'd know that voice anywhere, you know," she said as she lighted gently behind Cheets' position on the rooftop. Keeping her wings open for balance, she trudged through the soft snow and sat beside her old friend, shoulder to shoulder, and gave him a hug. "Merry Christmas, Cheets." They were silent for a time.

"I know some years are hard, luv. And some are VERY hard. And it sucks, yeah... but it tends to make us stronger in the long run, even if we would prefer to avoid the whole process. Right now you're in a time of transition, wishing for the good times you used to have and not knowing what the future will bring; i wish i could make it better for you, but we're each kind of stuck in living our own lives. All i can do is offer you my encouragement and my friendship and a warm hug here and there. So don't fade away from the old parts of your life that you can still lean on now, 'kay?" Blue pointed below them, where a group had come out of the house to start a snowball fight, not knowing they were observed from above.

"Stick with us. You've been gone away too long. Yes?" Blue bumped his shoulder and smiled at him. "Tomorrow's a brand new year, and who knows what it will bring? For all of us, we'll face it together..."
