Father Cross woke up early in the morning to strange sounds coming from outside his second story window. If he had to guess it was only 2 or 3 in the morning so noises outside wasn't a normal event. He rolled out of bed and got dressed. His robes were cold but they were thick and warmed up quickly. He put his shoes on and stepped outside the rectory. A few hundred yards in front of him stood the church. it was empty at a time like this and almost looked creepy in the darkness. It's Gothic architecture lent to it's strangeness. He turned away from the church and wandered around the side of the rectory where he'd heard the noise. The graveyard for the church stretched back almost that far and the mausoleum stood only a few dozen feet from where Cross had heard the noise. They had grave robbing problems a few years back but nothing recently. Still, Father Cross didn't want to take the chance. Wiping the crust from his eyes he went to check on the mausoleum for people who weren't supposed to be there. He opened the gate to the graveyard and stepped in. Being careful not to walk over anyone's plot, he worked his way back to the Mausoleum. The gate on the front was still locked thank god. Nothing had been disturbed. He'd probably just heard some animal rustling around. However, when he turned to leave he noticed something on the gate. It was liquid substance dripping down the bars. It was like some kind of animal saliva or some secretion from insects but was only localized on the bars. The priest bent over to take a closer look at the "stuff" he'd found but a long wooden staff struck him in the back of the legs. he soon found himself on his back looking up at the stars, his back hurting from the fall. Whatever had hit him before now struck him in the head and his vision blurred. Just before he passed out he saw something black and shapeless hover over him, blotting out the stars. |

"Bless me Father, for i have sinned." Sarah Cooper said through the wooden lattice screen. "It has been three weeks since my last confession." Father Cross smiled on his side of the confessional and leaned forward slightly. "Go ahead my child. What is your Sin?" "Father, i lied. I told my Mother and Father that i was going out to a glade i know in the woods to pick some flowers. But what i really did was meet a boy." The 14 year old girl started. "I see... and what happened in this glade?" Father Cross asked gently. "Nothing Father, i swear. I just went there because i like him, but we didn't do anything but go for a walk and did some talking." She said frantically. She was genuinely worried that she gave the priest the wrong impression. "Not to worry my dear. As long as you are telling the truth to me, which is why your here." He said with a chuckle. "In the name of the lord i absolve you of your sins. For penance, i have something special for you." Sara sighed in relief before composing herself and asking "what is it father?" "instead of just sending you out to do some prayer i would like you to help the sisters with something." Father Cross said. "Tomorrow they're going into the crypt to light some incense. The sisters are very capable but getting old. they could use some help" "Of coarse Father, i'd love to help. By the way, what happened to Sister Agnus? is she doing ok? We were so worried when she fell over during mass last Sunday." Sarah asked concerned. "She's fine my child. She's just a little old and had gotten a little sick. She's recovering in the rectory, i've taken personal charge of getting her back to her spry always watchful self. She'll be back to patrolling the pews for unruly children in no time." Father Cross said as he stood up. He walked out of the confessional and turned. Sarah came out of her side and looked up at the tall priest. He put a hand on her forehead and made the sign of the cross. "The nuns will begin their work tomorrow night at 7 O'clock. I'll tell them you'll be there Sarah." "Thank you father. I'll be there." Sarah cooper said with a smile. |

"Where are the Sisters, Father?" Sarah asked as she stood in the Church's lobby. even though it was only 7:00 it was twilight out which gave the church a sort of creepy lighting inside it. Father Cross hobbled in using his new walking staff. He had sprained his ankle one morning doing some landscaping work in the graveyard which is why he needed the staff to walk. "They're already in the crypt. They're apparently a little eager to light their candles for the dead and leave. I honestly don't blame them, the crypt can be a little disconcerting." "Ok Father, i'll join them now." Sara said moving towards the winding stone starecase that lead down into the crypt. "Be careful down there and stay away from the wooden door. That goes to the Catacombs. Those run deep under the church. Not even i feel entirely comfortable with knowing my way around down there." Father Cross said to her. "Thanks father, i will." Sara said as she descended the stairs |

"Sister Christine? Sister Mary? where are you?" Sarah said as she crept through the Churches crypt. It was dark, darker then it should have been if two Sisters were supposed to be down here lighting candles for the dead. She felt something brush past her shoulder and she cried out. When she looked, there was nothing. She pulled out her own bag of candles and lit one to help her see. The crypt was covered in cobwebs and dust like no one had been down here in months. A shadow moved to her right drawing her attention but there was nothing there when she looked. She took a few more steps forward. "Sisters...." She whispered. She opened one of the many wooden doors in the crypt and peered inside with her candle. What she saw shocked her to her very core. She was so horrified she couldn't even scream. Two bodies hung from the ceiling of the crypt chamber. Skeletons, hung from the neck, wearing what was left of nun habits. Sarah turned to run but a shadow of a creature was behind her. It's form was monstrous but without specific features. She felt something hard strike her in the head and she fell backwards. The last thing she saw before blacking out was the two skeletons swinging lazily over her head. |

The darkness outside the Church was lighter then usual tonight. Probably because of a 62 angry men and women outside it's door carrying torches, farming implements and an odd sword here and there. Father Cross stood at the top of the church steps trying to calm the people down. The Coopers broke from the group and came halfway up the stairs. "Speak plainly Father, where is our daughter?!" They shouted to him above the din of the crowd. The crowd quieted to hear the priests response. He lowered his hands and clasped them together in front of him. "Sarah came to me for confession this morning. As part of her penance i told her to help out the Sisters with their prayers in the Crypt. They did not come up for hours, so i went down to check on them." He paused, almost as if he was having a difficult time with what he was about to say. "I found the Sisters... dead, hung by their necks. I saw no trace of Sarah, but there was something else down there, in the shadows. i couldn't see it, i didn't want to see it. Whatever it was it was truly a spawn of hell." One of the men in the back raised his wood axe over his head and shouted "then let us go down there and kill the beast before it does to the Cooper girl what it did to the Nuns." The crowed shouted in agreement raising their own weapons. Father Cross raised his hands again to calm them. "This is a house of God! You can't just barge in here with weapons demanding to kill something. Especially not with Women and children!" The crowd settled down after that comment. It was true that they couldn't charge into a church with bloodlust. And they would never want to risk the lives of the children and women. Mr. Cooper put his carving knife into his belt and nodded. "Then let us go in cautiously. Only men between 16 and 40 should go." Father Cross gave them a defeated look but relented. "Very well, but please, have respect for the dead." The crowd barely waited for the priest to finish his sentence before they brushed past him and went into the church. Those with weapons sheathed them while the villagers with larger farm implements left them behind and instead carried torches with them into the darkened church. The old men, women and small children stayed behind with Father Cross, watching the men enter the church to look for the beast in the Crypt. |
