Born Of A Broken Man

The forest covering these mountains was thick and dark, making it much easier for Legato to move by day. The sunlight could not truly harm him anymore, but it hurt and made him weak. The pain from something as normal and vital as sunlight also served as an unpleasant reminder of what he had become. His leg didn't hurt at all anymore and while the back of his shirt was still a charred hole, the exposed skin was as smooth and flawless as if he'd never been harmed at all. He had been walking nonstop for days without rest, but didn't feel tired at all. Legato felt unnatural, and wished he still had the pain to keep his mind occupied. Time alone was his thoughts was the last thing Legato needed, but it was too dangerous for him to stop at any of the small villages he had passed. The madness had started to sink in again before daybreak, and he could feel the fog pooling at the edges of his mind. In truth he welcomed it, the memories of his failures and his loss long ago were unbearable, as were the atrocities he had committed as Ermetico's mad servant. If the madness would take this away he didn't care what else happened. While a good man at heart, he had seen too much, and his will had long since been broken. Still, he soldiered on. He kept walking at the same steady pace. He had to put as much distance between himself and the girl as he could. Maybe if he got far enough away from those poor people he wouldn't ever find them. Legato slowed as he entered a small clearing. he could see evening was approaching. Or was the sun rising? Was that east or west? He was feeling so confused. "Where am I?" He wondered aloud. "What am I doing here?" Legato felt the last of his consciousness submerge itself beneath the roiling chaos. Fog sat on a stump and felt his bare skin through the hole in the back of his shirt. "I want a new one." he demanded to a nearby tree, looking disappointed when it didn't respond. His orders tugged at his mind like chains. Fog's thoughts turned to the girl he was looking for and the strange playthings who protected her. They had been strong. Maybe not stronger than Fog, but there were more of them than there were of Fog... weren't there? "Wait, how many am I again?" Fog asked the tree. Fog needed to get stronger if he was going to get the girl back. He clapped his hands in delight. "Dinnertime." |

It was a small village, perhaps hosting a population of two hundred. The land was too rocky and mountainous in this part of the world to support large groups of people. Fog wasn't lucid enough to realize that finding a strong person to feed on in such a small village was unlikely. Fog burst into the local tavern and clambered uncerimoniously onto the bar. The barkeep reached at his leg to pull down the strange troublemaker on his counter, and Fog fractured his skull with a swift kick to the head. He was pleasantly surprised that that captured the rest of the patrons attentions. "Five of you will be coming with me." He announced matter of factly. "The LAST five of you, so if I were you I would start getting rid of the competition." Fog stripped off his clothes and stood naked on the counter. He tossed the clothes into the crowd. "And tell your tailor I need a new pair of these. Thank you for your time, that will be all." |

Sitting at the bar was a rather petite woman, almost childlike in size, bushy blonde hair cascading down her tiny back past her waist, almost reaching her thighs. A single finger twirling the hair about it as she smiled into her drink held gently with the other pale hand. Bright ruby eyes twinkled as the new comer joined her, though with a much louder and disruptive entrance than herself. "That doesn't seem very polite, threatening to kill all these lovely morsels- excuse me, people. I mean, honestly, battles to death for amusment while they fetch you clothing? So bad sheik. And you've only killed one person since getting here. If you want true respect you might want to be, I don't know, just a little terrifying? Cause I'll tell ya, right now, I'm shaking in my boots. Not." A sweet giggle escaped her fanged lips as she winked at the nude stranger. "Also, you might want to cover up, there is a lady present." |

Fog laughed and clapped his hands as the crowd panicked and fled the bar. They were always so funny when they got scared. Only two people remained. One was apparently the local tailor, who was nervously picking up Fog's clothes. The other was a young woman at the bar, who wasn't being funny or running away at all. Fog was confused. Now she was talking to him! He hadn't talked with anyone in as long as he could remember, which admittedly wasn't very long. Maybe this one would be interesting after all. "Well if you kill all of them right away it gets boring. Trust me, I've done this before... I think." He paced down the table a ways. "A lady, Where?" He scanned the room. "Where is she, and why would I need to cover-" He looked down at himself in confusion. "Why am I naked?" |

"My my my... memory loss? Allow good ole Kailani to fill you in. See you came in here looking for a drink when a small and rather adorable squirrel walked in behind you, I take it you're deathly afraid of them since you started screaming like a little girl and ripped all your clothes off to toss at it." she said with a very desicive nod as her story flowed out into the bar. The people around them still panicking, which as humorous as that was, was started to strain her nerves. Too much screaming, and not enough drinking. "Now boy, I suggest you cover up with this." Kailani tossed him the cloak that had been draped over the back of her chair. "At least until that tailor finishes the repairs, that squirrel sure made a mess of things." |

"A squirrel huh?" Fog caught the cloak and draped it around himself. "Thanks, it was getting cold in here." He jumped down onto the far side of the counter, rifling absently through the shelves. "I didn't know I was afraid of squirrels, or anything else for that matter." He peered on the window. "I better make sure no one tries to leave. The whole point is to weed out the weak ones so I can feed on the strongest few. Not bad huh?" Fog turned suddenly and put his fist through the side of the wall. He looked back at the woman. "I'm Fog." He struggled to free his arm, which was buried in the wall up to the elbow. He could feel the cool outside air. "Feels like rain out there." he said absently. |

Kailani raised an eyebrow at the very strange visitor. She 'd met her share of crazys, this one didn't seem too terribly far off base. More harmlessly confused, and stuck in an incredibly dangerous Nocturnal body. How fun! Tucking a blonde curl behind her ear she stood up, walking over to him and yanking his arm out of the wall. "I'm Kailani, and Fog, this idea of attacking the strongest ones, thats great, really great idea. But not in this town. Everyone's rather wimpy." she spoke calmly "You wont get much from anyone, seeing as how I picked off what little in the way of strength this village had a while back. If you get out of the Mountains, you'll find plenty of strapping young lads and lasses." Kai said with a nod as she released Fog's arm. "I could even guide you out, does that sound like a good plan?" |

Fog pulled an inch-long splinter out of his arm. He stuck the bloody shard of wood into his mouth contemplatively. "Hmm, tastes like oak. I would have expected Pine..." He looked at the pretty stranger. She smelled interesting, maybe she would be tasty. No, he decided, this would be more fun. He could always drain her later if he wanted to. "Yes." He said. "I would like that. I need to get stronger so I can..." Fog trailed off and started rifling through the drawers behind the bar again. He found the flimsy iron safe and pulled the pins out of the hinges. He grabbed a handful of coins and slid over the bar. "You done?" He asked the tailor. His head started shaking more than the rest of him already was, and Fog assumed it was a nod. He poured the coins into his hand and pulled on the clothes. "Fits well" he patted the frazzled tailor on the head, turning around to face Kailani. "Lets go then, we're burning moonlight here." |

Kailani watched with a surpressed giggle at the very strange man she'd discovered, quite a fan. He looked strong, far better than any of the other ones she had picked up in recent times, the pickings where getting thin in her neck of the woods, and she was getting fairly tired of villages attempting to burn her at the stake. "I'll lead the way" Kailani said with a gentle nod as she slipped out the door, a rather large man weilding an axe seemingly waiting for the pair to leave. With a soft sigh she grabbed the man, snapping his neck and allowing him to crumple to the ground. "How troublesome..." a quickly brush of her hand on her shorts and she was off. "Let's see if you can keep up!" Kai said playfully running ahead and into the forest ahead of them, weaving through the trees at an almost impossible to follow speed. |

Fog followed Kai to the door and waved at the man waiting outside "Hi there big stranger. I like your Axe. Did you come here to kill me and save your village in a heroic and manly fashion?" He watched with a detached sort of entertainment as the man died. "Your new at this aren't you?" He asked the corpse. "Don't worry champ, there's always next time." He stepped gingerly over the body and took off after Kailani. She was surprisingly fast and Fog felt himself struggling just to keep up, not that he minded. He followed close behind, as gleeful as a child. For a moment he was close enough to clap a hand onto the back of her arm. "Tag" he shouted. |
