Swedish Progressive Death Metal band, Opeth, has just released a new album called 'Watershed'. It was released on June 3rd, 2008 (today). I was sure to pick it up the day of release, seeing as I am a huge Opeth fan. This record starts off quite differently, and unexpectedly. The first song on this record is a, roughly, three minute long track called 'Coil'. It's out of the ordinary for Opeth to start off a record with such a short song, let alone something so emotional and beautiful. Not that it's a bad thing. Mikael (frontman of Opeth) said himself that it would simply drown anywhere else on the record, so up front was the only logical place to put it. I agree. It definitely fits well as the opening track. It really draws you into the album, waiting to see what's next. It's a track that would draw in anyone who was a fan of metal, as well as anyone who wasn't. The only downside to this song is it leaves you wishing it were longer. Three or so minutes just doesn't seem long enough. I found myself wishing it were longer, that's for sure. So, given the absolute beautiful nature of the song, creativeness, but lack of length, I would rate this song a 9/10. It is truly a wonderful song. Next up is 'Heir Apparent'. This song is very odd, yet, intriguing. Definitely a change from 'Coil'. It starts off with a chest pounding guitar. This song is ideal for anyone into the Death Metal scene. As usual, the creativity is mind-blowing. It has it's usual 'eerie' and mellow parts, which only add to the evil and interesting sound Opeth goes for. This is definitely one of the best songs on this record. 10/10, because it really sucks you into it even further, to the point where you can't get enough. The Lotus Eater is the third track. Definitely another odd, yet incredible masterpiece. It really shows what kind of a 'sick' mind Mikael really has. It definitely beats 'Heir Apparent' with it's weird, evil, interesting sound. It has quite a unique use of the keyboards, as well. Very well thought out track, as you can clearly hear when listening to it. Everything fits together so well. It receives a 10/10 from me. Number four is called 'Burden'. The song is about a man who carries such a burden inside of him, it's almost unbearable. Just like 'Coil', this is a song of great sorrow and beauty. It's the kind of song you would sit there and listen to, while doing nothing, and just contemplating on past mistakes you've made in the past. It has such emotion in it. It's not a song I could listen to time after time, unless I was in a depressed mood. It will receive a 8.8/10 from me, just for the very slight lack of replay value on a regular basis. Track five is a song called 'Porcelain Heart'. This track was released a month before the album as a downloadable, ring tone, and they made a music video for it. It features no harsh vocals, which may scare off some Death Metal fans at first, but it does feature some emotional and very harsh musicianship. Do not let the fact that it's purely clean vocals drive you away from it. It is an incredible song to say the least. Definitely got me hyped for the release of this record when I heard it. It uses a great combination of harsh musicianship as well as softer, mellow parts. The lyrics are full of sorrow and beauty as well, only the music is on a heavier level. It receives a 9.5/10 from me. Ah, Hessian Peel, finally. This has to be my absolute favorite track on this record as well as the longest track on the record. This song starts off with a great acoustic guitar riff. It really displays a great deal of emotion, and draws you in. A few seconds in, an electric guitar joins in with the acoustic, followed by Mikael singing his heart out. It remains mellow for a little while. A little while later, it begins to get heavier. It then suddenly gets more mellow. The music is made as if it itself is telling some sort of story. You know, like some orchestras do with their music. It's very similar to that. After the sudden mellow parts, you get into some very harsh vocals and music. Very epic. Very, very inspirational for a guy like me. Instant 10/10 for me. Last but not least, Hex Omega. The seventh and final track. Hex Omega is one of those songs where you will find yourself headbanging to it as soon as it starts, and you won't even realize it. It starts off heavy, but slower. This is where you really find yourself headbanging, and the goes into a more mellow part. Very eerie sounding, just like Opeth usually does. It has it's heavy and soft parts, as well, like most Opeth songs. I'll give this one a 9.5/10. Opeth has, once again, out done their previous album. My overall rating for this record is a 10/10. It was absolutely amazing, mind-blowing, and one of the most beautiful records I have heard in a very long time. It's well worth the money. |
