I'm appearing at Borders Oxford as part of Oxfringe Literary Festival on 2 April, 6:30 - 8:30, reading from The Ten Visions - my first ever public appearance. Those of you who've seen my website will know I'm a blurred, photoshopped person with a hat covering most of my face, and I tend to be monochrome - so I'll be easy to recognise on the night. In reality, showing my real life face is unnerving... and choosing what to read even more so. Hiding behind the nice safe (and very beautiful) covers of the Black Lace books, it's easy to write wildly intimate scenes. Standing in front of a group of people - um - have you ever seen me blush? No, no-one has, because no-one's seen me, so no-one knows I do blush, or quite how much I blush, and tomorrow evening, a whole batch of people will find out!

Good luck, Olivia! I know you'll be a huge hit!

Me, I would never, ever give a reading. If I could get beyond the nerves, I wouldn't be able to read for laughing at the absurdity of my own work... and I'm not even a comedy writer! :D

Good luck, Olivia! I bet you'll be great.

I'm afraid I'm with Portia, I'd never do a reading. Actually, it's my worst nightmare. Book signings, and meet and greet I could contend with, but not public speaking.

Hope you'll tell us all about it.

Olivia, I'm sure you'll bowl them over. You have nothing to worry about. Let us know what it was like when you get back!

Once you get up there, it actually is pretty easy to do readings. I did them for my erotic poetry a couple times, standing right in the coffee shop of a Barnes and Nobel and turning people on. It was fun. The key part is to take your internal critic and that thing you call dignity or pride, beat them with a vibrator, and shove it into the drawer with said vibrator. While its getting buzzed, its a lot easier to just relax and have fun.

... then again, I love public speaking. And for that adage of pretending everyone is naked? Already do that, so it was perfectly normal for me.

So Olivia, how did it go after? I don't blame you for being nervous. I went to a friend's book reading last year and all I could think was, rather you than me! :D

I can't imagine reading erotica out in front of a load of strangers. I don't think I could keep a straight face; I got embarrassed enough reading an excerpt of my work out to my boyfriend in the privacy of our own home. So well done for being brave enough to go through with it! :)
