...the presence of water on Mars yesterday. Apparently, ice spots originally thought to be some other compound have been discovered to be water. This discovery is very important to NASA's plan to send people to Mars by 2033.

Yay. At least I'll have something to drink while I'm there.

Good grief, NASA, what's the point? There IS red dirt here on earth. It looks the same.

I wonder how much it'll cost. I mean we need more than 15 year supply of food for hundreds of people.

Which is why I want to stay here. If NASA runs out of money to send food to us on Mars, we're dead. On the other hand, if Mars turns out to be like C.S Lewis' book Out Of The Silent Planet, we'll be fine. ;)

The trip itself to Mars will take between 1.5 and 3 years, one way, and I doubt that there'll be more than 3-5 people per mission. Also, they'll only spend a few weeks on the surface before returning to Earth.

1.5 - 3 years?

That will get pretty boring
You'll have to pack a lot of space food

Ughh.... Who wants to be on Mars for only a few weeks and spend another year or three in a spaceship after just getting out :/

It's called 'stasis'. And yes, it is currently in the developing stages. The astronauts wouldn't be conscious at all during the trips.

Well, actually, their metabolism will be slowed to the point where feeding, etc., isn't needed until they wake.

Interesting indeed. Looking through a different perspective, one could assume that there may be life forms on the planet.

2033. Shouldn't be too long. :P

Awesome discovering! :D

I am thirteen now, will be 38 in 2033. I suppose that I could, age-wise, go. =D

...Just hypothetically, of course. First, I´d make sure that all "Stasis"-technology was properly tested before the launch. And I´d also like to know if you´re dreaming during a stasis. I wouldn´t like to have such a long nightmare... 1½ year of being haunted by whatever cruelty my mind comes up with. :'(

Also, who knows what accidents could happen? Have any of you guys seen Red Dwarf? Saw what happened to Lister? That could, technically, also happen to those astronauts. :\

Anyway, about finding water on Mars: This won´t just be vital to the future expeditions: it also adds evidence to the theory of Life On Mars!
Imagine that, our nearest planet, once being the home of a whole species!

So, basically, for the Astros, it´d be a kind of "Deal"? Three years of your life, in change for one-two weeks on the surface of Mars? Seeing as they would be unconscius during the trip.

That would certainly revolutionize our knowledge of the universe; the discovery of an ancient species on Mars would definitely be quite extraordinary, but astronomers generally agree that it's unlikely life ever existed in great numbers on Mars. The planet is just too far out of the habitable zone of our sun. It is still, however, possible that we may find bacteria, etc., on Mars, which would still be a great discovery indeed.

Yes, indeed. But this is also related to another theory: Life coming from Outer Space.

If the small, basic... DNA-things... that ends up evolving into life comes from space, they might also have landed on Mars. If we - even though it´s very unlikely - found life on Mars, it would be possible to explore these creatures DNA structure, and if it´s reminiscent of any DNA from Planet Earth, it adds proof to this theory, too. ;)

Assuming the DNA was still intact, yes, it certainly could.

Of course, Europa is also a prime candidate for the possible existence of life on other worlds too.

Europa is the faraway planet similar to Earth, right? If so, the finding of water on mars helps the theory of life there, as well. If the finding of water on mars led to finding life, it would be almost impossible for there not to be life on Europa.
