Moon Theory.; The theory about the moon being...

I was wondering what some people thought about the theory of the moon having once been a chunk of out planet, but dislodged when something impacted into the planet? I just recently remembered this theory, and figured that it's still labeled as a "theory".

Personally, the theory itself is pretty solid in some ways, though I actually forgot what the evidence was backing it up. However, I'm more inclined to believe that it was just a gigantic rock, such as an asteroid, and was just caught within Earth's atmosphere.

So yeah, I'm just curious is all.

My beliefs would incline me to say that God created and put it there intentionally. Not to be a killjoy or anything. That's what I believe.

But otherwise, yeah, for the most part, the theory for our moon's start is sound. There are plenty of holes, so that's why it's still a theory.

I agree. Nice one, Kakaru. =P

Other than that, your theory is quite good, and makes sense. I mean, if we're talking about Religion, God could have made the moon part of something else, and then break away at a later time.

It's not my theory, it's been hanging around for some time and I was wondering what people here thought about it. =P

The theory is indeed plausible if were not for my viewpoint on the universe.

I just go by what science says about our universe, more because that makes more sense to me personally... even if it's more depressing in the long-run.

I go by what Arenethas thinks.

But going by science, I would be inclined to believe that that would be what happened.

(Pssst... can asteroids be that big?)

Asteroids on their own actually can be that big, though it's incredibly rare. There are a few almost as large as our moon in the Asteroid Belt.

I´m an atheist, which is probably why my view of the universe might be a little different than many of yours. Just thought I´d mention it, right?

This theory seems largely possible, Spink, but I agree with you: The Asteroid Theory seems much more likely to be true. There´s also a theory saying that the same hppened to Pluto: That it was just passing by, when it got caught by our Sun´s Field of Gravity?

There is, however, another theory: You know how planets were made from eventual dust and stones hitting each other at the creation of our Sun´s gravity, and how the creation of Planet Earth therefore was rather coincidental? This theory says that, when the other planets got their cores, and so their individual gravity, the moon was created, but it did not go in curcuit around the Sun; rather, around Planet Earth. ;)
This theory is, basically, the same thing as the Asteriod Theory, just with a little difference. ;)
