The Events of This Post Took Place in the Summer of 2006

Cadence scrubbed her feet gently in the river, the water making her hands turn pink from the cold. She stood upon the muddy bank, nightfall worried her most. The bleeders were out everywhere, despite the wolves. She grabbed her clothing and began to rinse them in the flow. She kept a vigilant eye for any vampires that she may need to ignite.

There were no vampires nearby, and there was a very good reason why. Kieran Lockhart, alpha male of the Shadowfang pack, was back in the area again. This time, he had brought two mated pairs with him, and so his pack was growing again.

He was wandering in the forest, an area of it that he frequently used to hunt, and had picked up a vague scent that seemed familiar to him. Creeping along, he sniffed every few feet, but was so intent on the scent he was tracking that he didn't even realize he was near the small river that he used to swim in when he was younger.

His foot, bare as the day he was born, caught on the bank, and he flipped over into the water with a mighty splash, barely managing to catch a glimpse of a female figure before he went under.

He came up a few seconds later, spluttering and wiping water out of his face, shaking it out of his shoulder length hair.

Cadence was ringing out her clothing when without warning she was splashed. She sighed and began to ring out her scarlet hair. Her blue eyes looked in the direction of a gorgeous figure. She could sense something about him. As she looked at him her heart began to speed up. She finished ringing her hair and sat in her undergarments on the edge of the river, re-ringing her clothing.

"Who are you?" she was a little more than curious as to who this man was.

He was fair on the eyes and she kept hers on him for that reason.

He stared in shock for a moment, once he had cleared the water out of his eyes. He couldn't believe what he was seeing. There was no smell of werewolf coming from her, but she was still in the werewolves' hunting grounds. She had to be either crazy, or extremely strong and knowing it.

He raised an eyebrow at her simple question, and then chuckled. "I think that should be a question YOU should be answering, as you are in my.... family's hunting grounds." He rose to his feet, his six foot frame shedding water like nothing.

"Well excuse me for thinking the wolves and gypsies had an agreement. Besides, you won't kill me." Cadence stood and tried to make it look like she wasn't staring at him.

She started back for the gypsy camp, it would be about half an hour before she was actually anywhere near the camp. She just hoped her feet would hold up to that kind of abuse. The distance didn't worry her, it was the terrain. It was the leaves and roots and twigs and all the other junk that would make her regret it in the morning. Though even with this she refused to wash in the part of the river the other gypsies did. It was too open and her skin was too fair for them with her clothes on, why would it change once she took them off?

He chuckled. "Well, pardon me for being paranoid, but when your mother's been killed by a vampire, you get a little paranoid. I'm sure if vampires had killed YOUR mother, you wouldn't have been so snippy with me just then."

He grinned. "And on top of that, what proof is there that you're a gypsy? Lots of people dress like that, not just the gypsies. Aside from the clothing, you really don't look like one anyway," he said, knowing full well that he DID look like a gypsy, bedraggled clothing and all. With his raven black hair and rather... flamboyant clothing, it was hard to tell the truth of things: the young man was only HALF-gypsy.

Cadence dropped her clothing and walked back over to the werewolf, slapping him back handed across the face.

"You'd do well to watch your tongue wolf. Not all of us are as fortunate and have another family to run home to," she walked three steps away and turned and walked back, "and for your information, mutt, my own people sold my father to the bleeders. He is why I don't look like a gypsy, and if looking like one meant I'd be like you, I'd rather stay pale. And if you want proof," she snapped two fingers and the trees around the two of them lit up, every leaf glowing, "there it is."

Cadence gritted her teeth and ran away from him, fists clenched and tears streaming down her face.

When she slapped him in the face, he jerked his head back, staring in shock at her.

When she started talking, he immediately understood why she had done that. But the explanation of what had happened to her father rang bells all throughout his mind. He stared at her retreating back for several moments, and then spoke only five words.

"Cadence? Is that really you?"

Cadence stopped, "he knows my name?" she muttered to herself.

She turned around and looked back at him, shocked. Looking him over one more time she felt a sense of familiarity, like a dream coming back after being forgotten. She walked back over to him.

"Kieran?"

He took a step back, a look of pleased shock slipping over his face before he picked her up in his arms, spinning her around a few times before setting her carefully back on her feet. "By all the gods, it's good to see you again. But sweet merciful Fates, you sprouted while I've been gone! How'd you get so big?" he said, grinning in his characteristic lopsided grin.

"And... I'm sorry about what I said. I didn't realize it was you. I didn't recognize you until you mentioned your... your father, and then I got a better look at you. It IS good to see you again, I mean that."

Cadence looked at him in disbelief, "why'd you come back?"

She was hurt but at the same time she was excited. He'd been gone for years and she didn't think she'd see him again. It was a shock to see him, not an unpleasant one in the slightest. She just didn't know how to react, partly because she didn't know what she felt.

He shrugged. "I left because I had to. I was going through some issues that I had to go to my father's pack to learn about," he said quietly, kissing her on the forehead like he used to do when they were little. "And ONLY they could have explained it. None of them here could have. At least, back at the camp," he said softly.

He smiled. "But does that really matter? I'm back, and it is GOOD to be back home," he said softly. "My father's dead, by the way. Some form of freak disease that wasn't contagious."

Cadence looked up to him, "you could have at least told me bye before leaving for five years."

Her tone was quite like his, but more bitter, "things have changed Kieran, things have changed a lot. I can barely show my face around the gypsy camp, everyone is calling me out on my half blood. Kieran, do you even realize what happened when you left? Everything got much worse. I just can't.. never mind."

Cadence leaned into him, finding slight comfort in his smell and warmth. She wanted so badly to be angry with him, to try and make him feel like she felt when he left, but couldn't bring herself to do it. Part of it was how she felt about him, and another part was her father. She'd promised to never make someone hurt just for her own personal revenge. A few stray tears stung her eyes from behind her lids. She tried her best to keep them back as she sniffed roughly to keep from crying.

He shook his head. "Cade, please. I know, okay? I've already poked in and around the camp. I know they're being anal to you about your blood. You think they won't be about mine? There isn't a single one of them that doesn't know that my father was a werewolf and not a Gypsy. I guarantee you I won't be treated any differently....

"At least, if I went in like this," he said, his voice dropping several octaves and in volume as well. His eyes darted from side to side, and he sniffed several times. "That's... not supposed to be here," he growled under his breath. "And it had better not come any closer."

As he said this, a pulse of supernatural energy rippled slightly, and even Cadence could feel it.

Cadence stiffened slightly, she knew what that was. Her head was screaming at her to run. That's what gypsies do when vampires are near. The only problem with that is that the vampires are faster than the gypsies.

"What do I do?" Cadence didn't know whether to run and let Kieran take care of it or stay and let Kieran take care of it.

She buried her face into his chest and inhaled deeply, trying to relax a little bit.

"Stay put," he hissed, and slowly dropped down to nearly crawling on hands and knees, slinking off into the shadows. It didn't take him long to vanish into them, save for the sudden flash of glowing green eyes. But this could have been a trick of the light, as this vanished as well, shortly thereafter.

Within moments of his departure, something large and heavy dropped on top of her, and claws scored at her arms. But the weight suddenly vanished, the lifting accompanied by a low rumbling growl.

Dangling in mid-air was a vampire, fangs bared, eyes glinting, arms waving furiously as it both tried to latch on to her and get at what was holding it up.

What was holding it up looked like some strange combination of man and wolf. The human body, slightly elongated, relatively speaking, with a familiar blaze behind the eyes, that rested in a wolf-like head, fangs bared. A simple jerk of the arm, and a snap was heard. The vampire went limp, and was tossed aside carelessly.

The werewolf -- for that was indeed what is was -- bent down, eyes locking to hers for a moment. Then he began to shrink, the tattered remnants of clothing sliding away as Kieran slowly reappeared from beneath the fur and fury. "You okay, Cadence?" he asked, not even realizing his current state of dress at the moment.

Cadence smiled after a few seconds, the shock wearing off. She touched the tip of his nose softly, giggling and pulling her hand back. She gently touched his shoulders, rubbing his skin and massaging the muscles. Her right hand moved up from his shoulders and chest to his neck and jaw.

"Thank you," it was said an almost absent-minded reverie.

She laughed and used her right hand to pull his head down to her level, giving him the same kiss on the forehead he'd given her moments earlier.

He held up a hand, one finger extended, mouth open like he was going to say something. But then he stopped when she pulled him down and kissed him on the forehead. The hand fell to his side, and his mouth closed. His lips compressed into a thin line, and he raised an eyebrow at her.

"What the hell was that all about?" he asked curiously. "You just got attacked by a vampire, and here you are acting as if it never happened. You STILL haven't managed to get rid of the carefree nature, have you?"

"If I get rid of the carefree nature, I won't be me, now will I?" Cadence laughed and tapped the tip of his nose before turning around and walking away, her hips swaying in a slightly exaggerated motion.

She looked back over her shoulder and laughed, turning back around, "you may wish to come back to camp with me, you're kind of, you know, naked."

She laughed again and began to run back through the forest.

He grinned, and tilted his head back, letting out a loud howl. When he was done shifting, he was in full wolf form, standing roughly four feet at the shoulder, still with that lopsided grin as he loped off after her. Before she got far, she was running ALONGSIDE a wolf, rather than ahead of it.

Even in wolf form, he gave the impression of laughter.
