Derth was glad when she chose to change to her human form again. This one did not trigger his instincts, and let him think more clearly. Free of their influence, her talk of the likes of ‘punishment’, ‘transgression’, and ‘willing to forgive’ grated against his pride. However, the thought of being able to still return home with a prize countered this. He clamped down on his urge to finish the hunt with this presumptuous being. Instead, he thought of this mission she spoke of. He knew little about it, but it promised him the opportunity for him to accumulate and technology to take back to his home. Plus the prospect of battle appealed to him. He fell silent as he considered his options. In the end, his desire to return home eventually and his desire to live won over his pride. “Give me the secrets of node creation, control, and manipulation, and the equipment needed to make such an engine for my ship,” Derth said, breaking his silence after his internal deliberation. “And I will return the prizes I took from this vessel and accompany you on your mission. On these terms, I will agree to abandon this hunt. Do you accept, or do we continue where we had left off?” (Sorry, it's short, but I'm not sure what else I can do while Derth and Lya are negotiating.) |

Once Melai had received the hatch-codes to Lya's ship, he started moving the Rey around the Profiteer again, this time very slowly, as he looked for a second hatch to enter through, since the Warg had already taken the main hatch. It was only with quite some careful maneveuring, and after the side of the Rey de los Muerte had grinded towards the side of Lya's Profiteer a couple of times, that Melai managed to bring the Rey up so that its much larger form stood sideways towards the back of the Profiteer, and more out of luck than anything else, Melai managed to connect the main docking bridge of the Rey to the Profiteer's cargo-hatch. "I think the connection is secure now," Melai told the others, standing up from his seat after having typed in a final command to the Rey that the autopilot should keep it immobile and maintain the angle and distance to the Profiteer, "Let's go, there's no time to waste! If we're just a moment too late, this entire system will be blown to Hell!" Storming out of the control room, still with the IR-rifle in hand, Melai quickly went through what was usually the crew's quarters before he passed through the small extendable docking bridge that was between his and Lya's ships, and thus entered the Profiteer, figuring that Theyr and Talon and his mercenaries would follow, as they had already been instructed to. Even though he did not look over his shoulder at any time to check whether they actually did, Melai rushed through the cargo bay, recognizing the now familiar appearance that Lya seemed to prefer to assume these days, and some kind of... monstrous creature of the likes Melai had never seen before! "Freeze!" Melai yelled as loud as he could, aiming with the IR-rifle at the probable thief's head, and only once he had said that did it occur to him how ironic it was that he would say that, which was traditionally something Imperial troops said... not to mention that the told the alien to freeze when he held a firearm that actually worked by generating enormous amounts of heat. |

“Give me the secrets of node creation, control, and manipulation, and the equipment needed to make such an engine for my ship, and I will return the prizes I took from this vessel and accompany you on your mission. On these terms, I will agree to abandon this hunt. Do you accept, or do we continue where we had left off?” He had not given his name, but perhaps he wanted to conclude the barter before revealing his identity. Never the less a feeling of relief passed through Lya's entire body. There would be no more disruptor fire coming her way. Giddy at the thought of another deal made with a new species in this quadrant, she took a step closer to the alien about to agree to his conditions when the welcome voice of Melai erupted behind her. "Freeze!" Lya whirled around a huge grin plastered across her face. She suddenly felt as though everything was right with the universe again. "Melai! You're just in time to meet the bold and daring thief that has agreed to join us on our mission. Provided he meets your approval." Her eyes searched for the tiny part of the Mind that was with Melai. "If it meets with Retzaan's approval as well." With a look of utter desperation, she closed the few steps distance between them and reached her hand to his head. She did not want the alien to hear the rest. It took but a second for her to find that peaceful place just outside of hearing Melai's thoughts. If not, please shoot the bastard before he hits me with another blast from his disruptor. I'd rather not go through that again, and I don't know how many hits I can take before I fail to function. Countdown to self destruct at eighteen minutes and counting. |

The captain of his guard waved the men down to follow Melai in, and Random followed suit charged stun gun at the ready, looking all the world like he actually belonged among the soldier, and managing the look through sheer force of will. As he walked behind his men he examined the protocol, each one went in at a certain time, and they went in, in a certain order. The captain set up position very close to Talon, dragging him behind cover and watching as each and every man put guns on the foe, sometimes multiple guns from each man. If the order was given to fire they were going to make a lot of holes in something. As he entered the scene things were already getting interesting, Lya was in the process of talking to Melai while within his brain and the foe was standing around looking confused. Whatever was going on things were about to get rather interesting, or at least so Random hoped. Watching from the sidelines he trusted it to his Captain to keep things under control, and if things went tits up, well he'd just have to run and hide. Hopefully behind someone who didn't want to kill him, which made his options look very, very slim. Looking over his options Talon had to come to the conclusion that everything would just be better if the shit stayed below the fan. Edited by Silvermourn, Mar 19 2009, 10:44 PM.

"I mourn that which may have been but will never be." "Stupidity is a wound that bleeds forever; Intelligence is a blade that stays forever sharp" "An armed man will kill and unarmed man with monotonous regularity" "Nothing adds a little class to a sniper course like a babe in a Ghillie suit." "You have the rest of your life to solve your problems. How long you live depends on how well you do it." "Make your attacker advance through a wall of bullets. I may get killed with my own gun, but he's gonna have to beat me to death with it, 'cause it's going to be empty." | |

Rarely had something surprised Melai as much as what Lya said once she turned to him. She wanted the thief that had brought her to the brink of insanity, who had driven so far into her desperation that she had activated the self-destruct mechanism of her ship? And the surprise was even the greater when she touched him, and although the fact that she did not sound too fond of the alien creature after all calmed him a little, he also learned that the thief had shot her - and still she wanted him to join in their mission? This was definitely beyond Melai's understanding... he had himself ready to shoot and kill people without hesitation, and now Lya said she had instead aquired a new ally for the group? Secretly, Melai thought that he guessed that is what you get for sending a merchant to do a pirate's job. Before Melai could respond, though, he heard a quiet buzz from his shoulder as the little winged ant took off, only to land exactly on Melai's left temple, having it start to itch so insanely much that he thought it would drive him insane. "The creature appears able and strong, Melai," Retzaan's voice suddenly filled Melai's head, "And his ship has some powerful weaponry. He could be useful. If nothing else, you can just leave him once you are done on Earth, correct?" "How can you speak through a single ant?" Melai asked out loud, amazed at the power of the Mind, "I thought you Minds worked the best when you are many ants at once..." "We do," Retzaan confirmed, "And I am merely a representation of Retzaan, just one of his body. With distance, my connection to the main body was severed. I retain the personality and memories of Retzaan, but now we are two different creatures. Also, as a single ant, my powers are... useless, to put it bluntly. You can only hear me because I am practically sitting on your brain, and I cannot read minds nor manipulate them. I am, quite simply, just a guide." Melai shrugged as he raised his left hand to remove the ant from his temple, having the winged bug return to his shoulder where it once again became inactive. "Well, he has Retzaan's approval," Melai nodded towards the alien thief, lowering the IR-rifle, "And I don't really mind much either way. Pirates can't be picky about their allies, you know. So... welcome aboard, I guess." He nodded and smiled at the alien, but kept the IR-rifle in hand, just in case he would need it anyways - one never knew. "Melai Ketrom, captain of the good vessel Rey de los Muerte." |

As soon as the ship had docked and Melai had given the signal to attack, Theyr had started to look for the Silencer whom she actually had expected to be landed even before them. For a moment she thought about his ability to camouflage, but then dismissed that idea. It was Lya who was in the greatest danger at the moment, after all. And she experienced his rage with anything concerning his master – master! How could a true insectoid call anyone looking like humans his master!? – already a few hours ago, back at the port of Terra Gamma. If she had rated him correctly, Shadow Claw would start attacking the minute he had set foot on the ship She gritted her teeth with anger and started to curse the Silencer’s tardiness in her thoughts. Tactics just wasn’t something she was used to… She contented herself with following Melai through the ship and making sure that no unpleasant surprise would harm then. They finally reached Lya and the00 creature who seemed to be the thief, but to her surprise the expected fight didn’t occur – at least not yet. She placed herself to Melai’s right, not too sure how to act. After a moment she decided to shut up and to listen, perhaps for the first time in approximately three years. |

Having made a practically full circle around the three now-connected ships, but there appeared to be no more possibilities to dock to either of the allied spaceships. Running her hand over he panel then situated left from her she switched off the main engine systems- she didn't need those for accurate maneuvering and lower speeds, that what the L-systems were meant for. It was unlikely that they were going to move to somewhere in next few minutes, even in case the full thing won't attempt to blow up because they were taking too much time for discussion. Zet'kil still viewed the timed self-destruction as pointless move, which could only prove to be dangerous for them themselves making nothing better at the same time. She could have tracked down the ships once again when need be, and besides that, she could easily prevent them from leaving for some time- or one of them, as Lya's ship was now perfectly under her control. Which made her move even less understandable at that... For a few seconds- time was running- Zet'kil let the ship float freely in the emptiness of the space, as she attempted to think. With something that equaled a sigh she gave up. But still... Wasn't the possibility to emerge from the cargo while in open space mentioned earlier? There was a faint possibility that she got that part wrong but when she was right, the opposite should too be possible... In case she can open the cargo hatch on her own, as doubtlessly Melai and the others had already moved on. with a few quick words she made another 'keyboard' to appear on the panel on which she inserted some kind of codes which allowed her to make her ship to recognize the electronical systems on the Rey. Giving the SX an additional order she waited for a short time before the hatch slowly opened. So this worked just fine after all. With a measured move she lowered her ship to the same level with he opening, turning it so it had it was parallel to the Rey, before it carefully maneuvered in, moving sideways. For a moment it floated there, before the 'legs' it usually stood on when in one place for longer periods of time emerged from the usually smooth undersurface and locked the ship firmly into one place leaving it no chance that it could move away before the Xeian would command it to do so. Making sure the ship had perfectly landed on the floor, Zet'kil ordered it to close the hatch, quite in the same way it had opened that, only now there only was no need to make the two entirely different pieces of technology to understand each other, having already done that earlier. To the both sides she could hear the faint humming sound quieted, as the beam-shooters on both sides automattically powered down. She moved away from the panel, the controls on it retreating and leaving only empty, smooth black surface behind, as well as lights dimming down and finally disappearing behind her she walked to the lower level, reaching the tiny room which served as an air lock. It let her pass by, so there was nothing which could harm her in the remains of atmosphere in the cargo. Without a second thought she hurried on through the now rather still ship-everyone one inside had moved to somewhere on- until she reached the docking bridge that connected the Rey and Lya's Profiteer. Soon enough she was able to see the rest of them, most backs turned to her. Only Lya, and the one who was possibly the thief they had been hunting. There seemed to be no immediate conflict so she lowered her arms a bit as she moved to stand near Melai, giving a closer look to the thief who had caused all this in the beginning... If not to blame Telkrans who built ships so perfect for stealing. No connection to owner, no automatic locking, letting others to walk in and fly freely... A race with highly evolved technology indeed. The thief was strangely close to some lifeforms- including humans- on Earth, except for maybe additional pair of hands, so in that way he reminded her, but that was abut all, besides the standing-up position. Consistence, if to believe what seemed, was closer to that of Earth beings, than to Xeians, who were very far from any being ever seen on Earth from that part. For now she stood and waited to get a clear understanding of the situation, until she was interrupted by the voice that announced the time which was left before the explosion. She turned her head for a bit, looking directly at the Telkran, despite that she could see her anyway, having eyes that let her see almost the full circle around her even when not moving her head a bit. Won't she stop that soon? She was not going to wait in a thing that is going to explode in a time humans called fifteen minutes... Edited by Shienvien, Mar 20 2009, 02:52 PM.

As Lya conferred with one of the aliens that had boarded the ship, he observed the congregation of beings that had appeared to aid the mist being. There was one human who boldly confronted him with some weapon, who Lya addressed and touched. He wasn’t a mist being though, his scent confirmed that. There were other humans, more professionally equipped and trained, plus one that smelled of fear but came anyway. There were also two insect resembling species, though they weren’t of the same species. Overall, Derth was surprised by the comradely shown by these supposed pirates and criminals, they came to the defense of one of their number, rather than abandoning her. He turned his attention back to Melai as the human addressed him. “Very well. I join your mission. I look forward to seeing this remarkable ship in action. You can tell it that it no longer needs to destroy itself,” Derth said, holstering his disruptor and drawing a vicious looking knife instead. It was about a foot long, and had a blade of a dull grey metal that was much more durable than it appeared. The blade was smooth and sharp on one side, and had a series of backswept spines of various sizes. The shorter spines began toward tip, while the longer ones were closer to the handle. Its handle was made from finely carved bone treated to increase its durability. Derth flipped it over to hold it by the blade. He stepped toward Lya and held it out to her, hilt first. “This is a Grerrthiv blade, a symbol given to the hunter when he begins his trade. It also serves as a symbol of the hunter’s allegiance.” “But it is not good to hunt beside the nameless,” Derth added, “I am Derthadgan, solitary hunter of Carnith, and owner of the Howling Warg. You may call me Derth if you insist on truncating names like the humans do. Tell me, to whom do I give my Grerrthiv to, and who will I hunt beside?” |

"Well, he has Retzaan's approval, and I don't really mind much either way. Pirates can't be picky about their allies, you know. So... welcome aboard, I guess." The others had all arrived on the heels of Melai. Even Talon had braved coming aboard in her defense, which frankly astonished her. She felt a strange sense of belonging that she had never experienced before. Which was all the more surprising considering she could no longer call Telkran home. She turned back to the new member of their party as Melai introduced and welcomed him. “Very well. I join your mission. I look forward to seeing this remarkable ship in action. You can tell it that it no longer needs to destroy itself.” Her stance relaxed visibly when he holstered his disruptor. It was a little known fact that disruptors actually destroyed a part of a shape shifter that could never grow back. A few more blasts would render her without enough matter to reproduce, not that that was likely to happen now anyway. A new shifter was created by the merging and splitting off of a male and female. It was 'born' complete, with all the knowledge of it's two parents. It began small and grew to adulthood, after which there was no further expanding of mass. A few more blasts beyond the point of being able to reproduce, and there would not be enough matter for Lya to retain her form. “This is a Grerrthiv blade, a symbol given to the hunter when he begins his trade. It also serves as a symbol of the hunter’s allegiance. But it is not good to hunt beside the nameless, I am Derthadgan, solitary hunter of Carnith, and owner of the Howling Warg. You may call me Derth if you insist on truncating names like the humans do. Tell me, to whom do I give my Grerrthiv to, and who will I hunt beside?” Lya noticed Zet'kil arriving just as the ship spoke again, Countdown to self destruct at fifteen minutes and counting. She had plenty of time. "I am Lya D'Vahl, shapshifter and profiteer. I accept your bargain Derthadgan of Carnith." She reached to accept the strange blade. "Though my people prefer peace to the hunt, be assured I will not idly let harm come to one who fights with me. If I might?" She shifted back to the form of a Carnith female. With hand extended as she had just done with Melai, her palm brushed Derthagdan's temple. Lya opened enough of her mind to allow him to know the truth of her words. There was no deception, he would have the technology he requested. Amenities completed, she spoke to the ship. "Ship, abort countdown." Then happy as one could be under such circumstances she morphed to human and turned back to Melai. Her expression soon turned to one of utter disbelief at the ships next words. I cannot comply Lya. The Planet Buster has not been returned to the vessel and I am detecting a short circuit in the cargo hold to the engine replacement parts for the vessel. Until these conditions are rectified, countdown continuing. Self destruct in fourteen minutes. |

“This is a Grerrthiv blade, a symbol given to the hunter when he begins his trade. It also serves as a symbol of the hunter’s allegiance. Tell me, to whom do I give my Grerrthiv to, and who will I hunt beside?” Carnithi? Here, in this galaxy? That was really a surprising find in an area like this was. They mostly had technology they had taken from other races, and therefore were not favored by too many. The Union was cautious, even when the race possessed neither force or numbers, at the moment at least, that could threaten them. No closer contacts with the race had been formed, the presence of Xeians in their galaxy being still only a few. She watched with mild curiosity, how the Carnith offered the Telkran an odd blade, without any question a traditional thing. The Xeians had only a few traditions, most of them erased from existence as the technology developed and took the part of their lives to itself. Zet'kil herself didn't regret the exchange not even a bit. Though when it came to shortening names, then she, Zet'kil-EX-Sket'la'naq'kna'te, had her name quite clearly split in parts, and she preferred herself to be called with the full first name, Zet'kil, in case not in too official conversation. Shortening that to Zet would be... Well, there was usually only a certain circle of other Xeians that could shorten other Xeian's first name like that. Which was enough of an explanation. The metallic-looking being, also carrying a lot of technology with her this time, crossed her arms, setting each of her four hands onto opposite shoulders as she watched the Telkran to accept the dagger. So she has too to accept this strange being in their group. Not that she had anything against it, at the moment she only viewed it as a good chance to get to know more of Carnithi, the race her own race was only observing, but still not contacting. Well, as long as he doesn't try to touch her things, she was fine with him. She was suddenly very alerted the next moment, hearing what the ship they had spent so much time to get to spoke again. "I cannot comply Lya. The Planet Buster has not been returned to the vessel and I am detecting a short circuit in the cargo hold to the engine replacement parts for the vessel. Until these conditions are rectified, countdown continuing. Self destruct in fourteen minutes." Oh, great. Now, besides technology that let itself be stolen they also had technology that malfunctioned. Because that was what not following clear orders was. One thing missing from aboard is no reason to continue blowing everything up, now was it... Good that she still has the few last things to try when they would run out of time. "Then lets return this thing to the ship and fix this short circuit... Preferably in the time we have left..." Zet'kil suggested, not too happy abut the situation, and with every passing second that feeling deepened. |
