I want, I can, I do
Zet'kil received the confirmation that Melai had indeed received the message she had sent.
TYPE: SX-F6A (Personal) -OF: Zet'kil-EX-Sket'la'naq'kna'te C:_TW-ER-682n24'778-6-ent-sty556'ttx8_CLXIV_224fgy-45v_Ven-2245ttg-Q2-W1

I am starting tracking now.

-End.

"The code doesn't have to be sent again every time." muttered Zet'kil to the ship, glancing at the screen which had the written form of the short one-sentence message sent on it- this time to both Melai and Shadow Claw, who too appeared to be waiting for her signal of some kind.
In some ways ships you had owned for a longer time were better, although the technology on those was doubtlessly older and not so good. At least those never got the owner's commands wrong or did things no-one had ordered them to do. But she knew well that those little oddities of new things will be gone after a month or so.
Thinking that she remembered how Raq'nakh controlled his own large ship, without even touching the control panel or saying any direct verbal orders. He had owned the thing for two years already, so that was no wonder.

She merely ran a hand over the controls again, before the already working engines flared to life and the small ship darted forward, almost momentarily reaching the required speed to leave the relatively weak gravity the asteroid had. This way was indeed faster than it would have been using the systems the ship used to levitate, although the second option was also possible. The systems were originally not meant for near-light speeds, and as the vertical placement had no effect on the inner conditions, it also didn't matter, at least not for the Xeians in general, including Zet'kil. Usually they preferred having as few important moving parts as possible when it came to the core parts of the ship like the hull, engines and main control systems. (But the rule clearly left out smaller things, such as inner walls or 'furniture'.) Xeian ships were rather hard, if not impossible to take apart because of that, so no stealing engines could have occurred in their case, even when not to mention that the ships wouldn't let themselves to be touched by anyone without permission anyway.

For a short time after that the SX moved in a constant speed near that of lights, far from the quickest possible as actually her ship had no problems with simply crossing the barrier the light had theoretically set on the way of all moving objects, at least as long as using the more powerful primary engines. But as speeds that high would have get on the functionality of the sensors she used for tracking, so she didn't rush with activating the rest of the engines- she was mostly following the weak trail the leaving ship had left behind, after all.

Zet'kil was well aware of the other alien standing close to her, and without turning her head from the numerous panels and also the things displayed directly on air, she suddenly spoke.
"Would there be any use of trying to contact your ship once we have found it? That is, is your ship able to recognize either you or a certain coding sent by you?
I should have the required information saved from the brief exchange of messages we had back on Gendon Delta 7. That information I could use as soon as I have at least the faintest knowledge where yous ship is since I trust you would have said if your ship sent out a some kind of constant signal.
If it would, then I would already know where it is... But I doubt it does as my ship didn't detect that kind of thing with the level of scanning it is set on..." She gave the Telkran a questioning glance.

Soon the ship slowed down even more, up to the level of coming almost complete stop. Like she had suspected the trail only lead to the thing some of them called a node head. With annoyed click she ordered the computer to try following the node line and try to find out whether this one was freshly made or was in an old node line, if such kind of thing was possible.

"Following node line successful. Coordinates of the end of the line received- 3A. Known nearby objects listed on screen 8B.Unable to comply the second order fully. The age of node lines can't be detected. Recent energy remains found do not suggest that the energy originally used was sufficient enough to create a new node line. Most probably the node line was made long ago and now opened up to allow pass. The results are not with an accuracy required to confirm." The ship replied neutrally. Zet'kil took a few seconds to investigate the mentioned screens. She asked to ship to translate the coordinates so she could send those with the next message. (Again directed to both other ships following her.)

Message-#Q3-W2

I have found the head of the node line the thief used to to travel. The other end of the node line is several light years from here. (I sent you the coordinates) There shouldn't be nothing but a nebula there- a little bit of hydrogen and some space dust. I suspect that the thief didn't stay there for long but found a new node line and used that to move on. The line here should be old, so I doubt he can open up new lines, of course only when he didn't use it only as a cover of some kind hoping to lose possible followers or something of a kind...
My ship is the only one here that can tunnel-jump, therefore needs no time to travel longer distances. I suggest that I go forward and find out whether he is still somewhere there or has he moved on. When using node lines to travel- especially pre-existing ones- there is a high chance that when we all move in that direction we are actually moving away from the thief's real location, in case he has moved in that time, so we would only lose time given the maximum speed your ship and will get no closer to catching him.

Waiting reply.

-End.

Sitting quietly and watching his monitors as the Xeian ship zipped right past the Rey - or rather, it moved at speeds that were so incredible that Melai only just sensed slight movement out of the corner of his eye before it was gone, but he thought that it was probably Zet'kil - a few moments passed before the computer announced that it had received another message from Zet'kil, and as he quickly read through it, he winched in regret. Zet'kil had a ship capable of moving any distance instantly, or so it would seem, and could easily pursue and catch the thief that stole Lya's ship, but then Melai and the Rey de los Muerte was just supposed to keep floating in orbit around Terra Gamma, waiting for Zet'kil to report the actual location of the thief, and then the Rey could start moving, and perhaps be hours reaching the final destination of the thief while Zet'kil and Shadow Claw (although Melai seriously doubted that his ship could keep up with the Xeian technology, which seemed utterly ridiculous to him) had to deal with the thief alone? With Melai's luck, they would either have been defeated by the thief before the Rey got there, or, which was more likely, considering Xeian technology, they would have re-taken Lya's ship before he got there.

With a sigh, Melai's fingers started tapping over the keys again: "Message received, Zet'kil. Go ahead and see if you can find the crook, and report to the Rey if you manage to find Lya's ship so we can start following. We will wait here in the meantime." He then told the computer to send the message, and leant back, shooting a look at the many instuments that controlled the Rey, wondering what they all did. With another sigh, this one bordering to being a groan, he digged in beneath his seat and got the manual on the Rey back out and started reading, trying to figure out how to fly the Rey de los Muerte like an actual pilot...

---

A group of men, all dressed in uniforms in blue and black and all with chips on their shoulders and chests that identified them as captains, stood in a circle in a room that buzzed with the activity in the walls, all around them, as the power from the generator of the enormous ship they were on sent through the many cables and into the several powerful engines and advanced weaponry of the vessel. There were eight men in all - seven standing in the circle, and one sitting in a seat in the middle, although the one in the middle had a little detail that told him apart from the rest: the chips on his shoulders and chest claimed him an admiral. There were no guards, neither human nor drones, because the admiral was certain that the seven captains could not hurt him... they were only holograms at the moment, after all.
"So the plan has been determined?" one of the captains asked, looking curiously at the admiral, "Only the eight of us will assault Earth?"
"Do you intend to question the command of a direct representant of Emperor?" Admiral Reed asked the captain calmly, "Because I could always request that your unit was transferred to another part of the galaxy... I hear that Emperor need more men in the Regway Cluster, and that the Segai are trying to expand to the rest of the galaxy, despite our efforts to keep them there. If you prefer fighting Segai to fighting insectoids, I would gladly reassign you."
"No!" the captain gasped, his face twisted with fear, "Dear god, please, no! I-I meant no disrespect, Admiral Reed! If your Asteroth goes to Earth, my Aamon will certainly follow! I just meant... well, if this really is supposed to be a major attack on the bugs, shouldn't we bring in the most powerful battlecruiser we have?"
"The Asteroth is our greatest vessel," the admiral reminded him, "Which spacecraft do you suggest could challenge my mighty destroyer?"
"Our prototype - the Apollyon!" the captain said, and the other captains mumbled in agreement, "This would also be the perfect chance to test out its properties in combat, sir, as well as see what kind of leader Captain Emerson is."
"Hmm... very well, I shall try to contact him," Admiral Reed agreed, and finally the captain seemed to relax. "Athena?" Reed called, and almost instantly the holographic VI (Virtual Intellingence) of the ship appeared before the admiral and awaited his orders. "Athena, open a comm-link to the Apollyon... and make sure to mention that it is me who is the sender. I need to talk with Captain Emerson."
"Yes, admiral," Athena complied before she started staring with empty eyes into the thin air while she established the link...

"Would there be any use of trying to contact your ship once we have found it? That is, is your ship able to recognize either you or a certain coding sent by you?
"Actually yes, once we are within a parsec of the vessel my voice alone, over the intercom, should suffice to stop anything the thief might be doing. The ship is intelligent enough to obey any of my commands and over ride what controls have been altered. Just let me know when you have found it. I want to personally take care of the thief. Though I am tempted to vent the ship, I will do my best to control my temper. It was a rather bold move to steal a whole ship. I would like to meet this creature before I dismember him."

That was assuming they weren't capable of shorting out her electromagnetic field, or had some superior strength she knew nothing about. What if she couldn't best the thief? What if she couldn't get her ship back? She had never doubted her abilities before. Was this also some strange human emotion? Doubt? Maybe Theyr was partially correct. There was a lot of change going on in her. The sooner she could get back to normal the better. But she was fairly certain that was going to be impossible. She had already tried to reorganise the thought process and cell structure she had received from Melai with no success. It had become part of her basic structure in this human manifestation. In fact some of it had even crossed over to her natural state. The fear she had experienced earlier when she had found her ship missing. Telkrans did not know fear, only the pleasure sensations of a good chase, the stirring of emotions. Consequences were something she had never even contemplated before. Now they seemed to interfere with her every action. Whatever she did, something within her jumped to the fore telling her what might be the eventual outcome of an event. Worry, that's what it was, she was worrying about everything. How did one stop? It was not at all pleasurable. How did humans make any decisions with worry looming before them?

"Do you have any type of tractor beam to hold the culprit in stasis? I do not want them to escape." Zet'kil had sent another message back to Melai telling him to wait. As the light years separated them she was somewhat surprised that the thoughts and worries stayed just the same. Her mind played out visions of a maniacal Theyr ripping the two humans to shreds before she could return, and suddenly in that light her ship seemed relatively insignificant. Sooner or later Lya was going to have to let Theyr know she was the weaker creature.

"Good. I'll surely let you know when I spot your ship." Zet'kil replied, trying not to imagine raged golden cloud of sparkly dust, which Lya looked like in her free form, viciously ripping the thief apart, particle by particle. Not the nicest kind of thing to imagine... Annoyed, she threw the images away from her head and looked at the screen that now had a message from Melai on it. -She didn't even know what the thief looked like, after all.

Message received, Zet'kil. Go ahead and see if you can find the crook, and report to the Rey if you manage to find Lya's ship so we can start following. We will wait here in the meantime.

Message-#Q4-W3

Clear. Proceeding with the tunnel-jump within moments.

-End.

"Do you have any type of tractor beam to hold the culprit in stasis? I do not want them to escape."

"Tractor beam?" Zet'kil asked, thinking for a moment. "Not exactly... But i think that my ship should be powerful enough to create a field that would prevent him from leaving for a time long enough. For how long exactly I can't say before I know the size and the power of the other ship but it should still be a lot more than the least you need to not let them to escape without getting to know what stealing a ship really means."
Saying that she waved away one of the things floating in air and focused on the controls again.

The ship once again moved from the spot, accelerating incredibly quickly with all the three sets of engines it had- (not including the levitation system) in less than two minutes it met the requirements that were needed to make the tunnel-jump without using up the additional energy resources. For a less than a hundredth of a second the ship then seemed to be still in the emptiness, despite of moving on the speed of light the very moment before, and then it was gone.
'It simply wasn't there anymore if one was to track the ship.

The ship was now several light years away, in the same nebula the two larger ships had been for a short time earlier. It hadn't traveled with speeds beyond all imagination. Theoretically one could even say that the ship hadn't moved at all. Technically it had ceased to exist in one place to be in another on the exact same moment, something that thousands of years ago was nothing but a crazy theory based on a few evidences of unexplainable behavior on some small particles. But now it was something Xeians did constantly, barely stopping to think that the very phenomena the tunnel-jumping was based on went against almost all common sense.

Zet'kil waited for the ship to finish calibration. New location and everything was somewhere else in comparison to the ship now. Strangely-or not so strangely- it always took the same few seconds, no matter how large or small the sudden change of location was. It was always everything that was differently positioned no matter whether the tunnel-jump moved the ship by three light years or thousands of light years.

Like she had suspected, there was no sign of the thief over there, only again the faint trace, some of which was a lot newer than the one. It appeared that he had stopped for a while, before moving on using another node line.

Message-#Q5

I am at the other end of the node line I mentioned before. The thief has moved on using another node line after staying here for a time, maybe to try to investigate Lya's ship. Starting to trace node line now.

-End.

((Sorry for the stupid mistake that I had made. Here's the new post.))

Shadow Claw had received the message that Zet'kil had sent. Once he had acknowledge the message, he saw the small ship dart out of its motionless state, and turned the thrusters on at full speed. Despite the Cosmic Hunter being very old, and the thrusters would not be as advanced as the Xeian's ship, it just managed to keep up with the Xeian ship. However, once the thruster had hit their maximum speed, the small ship started to go further and further away. The Silencer didn't mind the small flaw that his ship had though, since he could activate his hyper drive when he started to get really far behind. When Zet'kil's ship had come to a complete standstill, the insectoid maneuvered his ship, and slowed his down. If he thought that the speed that the small ship was going was its maximum speed, then he was dead wrong.

After a few minutes, it surged forward, accelerating at speeds that he wanted his ship to go. He followed, though his acceleration wasn't quick enough for him to keep up with the speeding ship. He had no choice, but to activate his hyper drive. Just as the message had said, he plotted the co-ordinates into the computer, and activated the hyper drive. The familiar portal that the Cosmic Hunter had been through reappeared again, and his ship darted through it. Unlike the tunnel-jumper that Zet'kil's ship had, the hyper drive that he had taken much longer than he had anticipated. Four and a half minutes later, he had arrived at where the Xeian ship was, and slowed his ship to a complete standstill. He remained silent, and waited.

(Am I supposed to wait with posting until you have finished editing that post, Merc, or have you forgotten what you were doing?
Also, Shien, I'm not sure what Melai is supposed to do, just floating around randomly in space waiting for you and Oracle to find the ship, other than send brief replies on Zet'kil's messages, and such short posts just aren't my style...)

((I didn't want to approach the thief in the last post too quickly as I knew Fortis would be away until Tuesday and I myself was about to leave the country for two days- now back- so I decided I'll leave the ship into some place that wouldn't be directly in the middle of everything, now I am just waiting for Mercinus to finish his post, otherwise I would have posted Sunday evening/Monday. Now to the post...))

"Just the same as with the last node line on the trail..." Zet'kil muttered at the ship, waiting anxiously- Partially because she expected this, or at least the next node bring them to the thief, but the second part of her thoughts were occupied with the simple fact whether the ship would understand a command phrased like that.
For several moments the ship was quiet, making Zet'kil to wonder whether the ship had indeed understood what she had said or was it just waiting as if she had never said anything t it.
Soon she already opened her yaws to say something not very pleased when the ship suddenly replied, monotonous and plain as ever:

"Following node line successful. Coordinates of the end of the line received- 7G. Known nearby objects listed on screen 2B.
Unable to comply the second order fully for reasons mentioned earlier. The age of node lines can't be detected. Recent energy remains found do suggest that the energy originally used was sufficient enough to create a new node line. Most probably the node line was made short time ago not only opened up to allow pass. The results are not with an accuracy required to confirm."

Zet'kil fingered one of her insect-antennas again, thinking over the words the ship had used to reply. The reply was very similar to the one the ship had given her on the first time, but yet some words on it were drastically different. So the ship did understand... And this was a new node line, not an old one anymore. Which meant... Had the thief got an use over the Telkran's ship and was now using its node-creator device or was his own ship really as advanced as needed for that and the old node was just a bare cover... Both were possible. It was just a little thing to consider while approaching.

Briefly touching one of the panels she opened up another message slot and glanced at the coordinates at the same time. It was a place on the edge of the galaxy, again several LY-s away from where the others were, but she herself was even further away at that, like she had suspected. At least the distances didn't really matter for her. The continued to send the message, dictating it to the ship, which instantly had the written form of it on the message slot, in the same black letters it usually used when dealing with written text, only this time the text was in a human language, not in the sometimes almost runic-looking Xeianic language. The message was directed to both other ships waiting for her somewhere. One of which had surprisingly decided to follow her here, she noticed.

Message-#Q6-W4

I have received the coordinates I suspect the thief is at at the moment.

63.9x-08.8y-54.7z

That is the ending of the node line which is newly created and therefore I assume goes straight into the destination, or at least to a place that he is about to stay in for a while.

I am proceeding with the tunnel-jump within moments, waiting for you to start heading towards the given coordinates in case you wish to be there.

-End.

Zet'kil ran her hands over the panel one more and the small SX-type ship darted forward, again accelerating with speeds which might have seemed near-impossible for those who had only traveled in the space for a ltime as short as a queen's lifespan or two.
And it vanished. Again, leaving behind no trail to follow, the particles of the ship and its contents neatly lifted from one place to another, without the use of the subspace, nodes, or even incredible speeds.

The ship came to a halt as soon as it reappeared the very same moment it disappeared in the other place it had been.
A few seconds it took for calibration and the scanners to detect the nearby objects and conditions...
The very next moment the scan had completed the computer announced what it had found- or rather, what two things it had found. One of which was definitely Lya's ship, if one was to judge over the presence of Palladium IV.

Message-#Q7-W5

Ships spotted. Location differs by less than 30 light minutes. Coordinates given. Waiting and proceeding.

-End.

"I have found the ship, now, it is in the reach of my ship's scanners." She commented to Lya, as she was quickly moving, opening, closing and altering many of the controls and panels in front of her, using all her four hands at once. Faintly the humming familiar to Zet'kil reached her ears. The beam shooters on the both sides of the ship were powering up to be ready to shoot at the very moment it was needed, along with the field-generators being set on the highest state of being ready to generate whatever field or effect was needed in or around the ship. "I think I could activate the field as soon as the thief makes the first attempt to escape and hold the ship up to as long as the field-generator power runs down to 50 percent, as this is the lowest I can let it go while being absolutely sure nothing could damage the ship of mine instantly- the field generators are also responsible for the performance of the main shielding- if that is gone there is only the reflectance and the hull to rely on. The level at which your own ship could damage mine was at 40 percent or so... Just to give you some idea. The generators eat energy like nothing else, so it usually goes rather quick... But I can ensure I can provide you with at least the time humans call twenty minutes, likely a lot more, in that case. The field generators actually have an energy source of their own, so it wouldn't power down the whole ship, but I wouldn't trust to leave my ship without the shielding when so close to the enemy. The computer has it's own energy system, the ship in general has its own energy resource, the weaponry has the fourth energy source... and that is about it. Here are also generators to create additional energy to be reserved in the all four sources... Generators use fuel but that I have plenty of each kind the ship constantly uses. The only matter with that is actually time. Just time, nothing more."

Maybe the time 'humans called fifteen minutes' had passed since the tunnel-jump, maybe twenty or a little less since sending the message, before Zet'kil was finishing with the final moves. The ship then took the simplest hiding even humans had used centuries ago, even when they used not so advanced technology nor was the technology even faintly similar. But yet, the very principle remained the same. The ship didn't no longer reflect signals, of accept them, it just swallowed those as those hit the surface, as if the signals had really met nothing more but nothingness.

The Xeian had the information from the last message exchange to the Telkran ship opened up, to use it as soon as they get as close as needed. the ship started slowly moving, in order to remain unnoticed as long as possible.
"Now... I should be close enough... Should I try to to form a contact your ship?" The Xeian asked from the Telkran who was starting to slip away to somewhere.

Lya caught sight of her ship and could wait no longer. The imperative to reach it was more compelling than she was able to withstand. Without a word, or staying to watch the Xeian's approach to the Profiteer, Lya left the control room. Reverting to her natural form she headed to an air lock she had seen the first time she was on Zet'kil's ship. On a planet Lya was bound by its gravity but here in space was freedom. As soon as the lock whooshed she expanded into the vacuum of space. The absolute zero energized her golden cloud, lighting it up like a miniature universe. Ions coursed through her. On whispers of stardust she traveled the light to her own ship. It wasn't a fast process, but at least she was ever closer to her only sanctuary.

The other vessel didn't appear very advanced. She was amazed at the temerity of whatever species it was deciding to abscond with her pride and joy. Did they really think there would be no retribution? Her thoughts during the travel across the frozen expanse had her worked to a fevered pitch. They other ship still appeared docked with her vessel, she would have to use the auxiliary hatch for the main cargo. If he was in the hold of her ship he would hear her coming. Her particles made contact with the control panel. For the brief instant when her thoughts melded with the ship she was at peace.

Ship, continue to function as if I have not arrived. All aliens aboard the ship are intruders, give me a count of how many have invaded us, their species, and their positions?

There is only one. The fur covered mammalian of unknown origin is presently on his own ship. Lya, the Planet Buster has been removed from us.

Ship open this airlock. Do not allow him to undock, as soon as I am aboard initiate tractor drives with the alien vessel. I want to deal with this dra'dock personally. Moments later she was firmly standing again in her own vessel. All appeared well until the ship lurched sideways.

Derth started as the ships suddenly lurched. The drive he was repairing was forgotten in an instant. The laser welder was cast from his hands as he ran dashed to the cockpit. “Report!” He barked, slamming a button to bring up the status screen.

“The prize ship has begun moving on it’s own accord,” The computer responded in a monotone voice. “Additionally, an anomaly was detected earlier. Analysis is not yet complete.”

“Show me!” Derth growled. Obediently, one of the screens popped on, showing the glowing golden mist flying into the captured ship. After looking at it quizzically for a moment, Derth realized something. It was using the control panel on the other ship! He began chuckling to himself, a deep short growling noise. “So, the hunt isn’t over yet. Good. It had been far too easy anyway,” Derth said, grinning. “Seal off the ship, deploy the armor, and power the weapons.” Derth paused a moment, and fell silent as he thought. “Then again, leave the airlock unlocked. Seal off the air vents to that corridor. I want to meet this mist thing in person.” Derth added, leaving the cockpit.

He walked through the corridors of his ship to the one connected to the airlock. Unlike his prize, his ship was neither graceful or refined. The corridors were crude, plain grey metal, with lights, vents, and controls spaced periodically. Several panels were missing from the corridor, exposing the wires, conduits, and mechanisms in the walls. Occasionally, sparks flew from one damaged section or another. Derth stepped into the corridor connecting to the airlock and prepared to meet the gold mist.

Meanwhile, outside of the Warg, the ship’s guns powered up and moved into their ready position, and power began coursing though their conduits. Numerous areas opened up on the hull, and crystalline panels began to slide out, covering the ship in a jagged, irregular layer. It was a technology Derth’s kind had stolen from another race, and had made good use of. The armor plates were made from a crystalline layer of carbon spheres, each containing a few molecules of exotic matter. When charged with different types of energy, the armor can assume different physical properties. However, though ready for combat, the Warg made no effort to move away or target Lya’s ship.

Emerson slowly opened his eyes inside the control seat in the middle of the bridge.

"Jump successful. No systems damaged, hull integrity nominal, crew vitals at 100%. Welcome to Sol, Captain."
The sound of the shipboard AI came from the walls. Apparently, it still took some time to re-establish the interfaces that were shut down during the critical moments of the star jump.

Emerson stirred in his seat, his limbs heavy, his head drowsy as if he had recently awoken from sleep. Although everyone at the Fleet received training on star jump physical management and its effects on the body, the damn thing still took out a decent load on a man each time. The drowsiness and sense of nausea was something one needed to get used to to serve in the Fleet.
But that was the least of Emerson's worries at the moment.

"Very well, Nemesis. Perform a scan, and contact any Imperial ships in the vicinity. We need to know where we stand."
"Aye-aye, Cap'."
