Comes the Justiciar

Background: The year is 27BBY, five years after the death of Jedi master Qui-Gon Jinn and the Trade federation's failed assault on Naboo. The discovery of the 'chosen one' on Tatooine has brought about the beginning of a struggle servants of the light side. The Jedi have been moved into action by the revelation of the Sith returning to the galaxy. Naboo has returned to stability, and with the election of chancellor Palpatine the senate is running smoothly. The Republic is prospering, even above the dissention of groups like the Trade Federation and the Techno Union. However, the Jedi are not so peaceful. Radnor, a Mid-Rim sea world, has been struck by a plague and is in danger of being overrun by neighbouring species the Avoni. Many Jedi have been dispatched to preserve the peace. On top of this, The Outbound Flight project proposed by Jedi master C’Baoth has finally been set underway, and numerous Jedi knights and masters have volunteered for the adventure. The resulting absences in the ranks of the peacekeepers is taking its toll. A dispute over territory has led to several miniature wars on the Outer Rim of Republic space. What few Jedi remain have been spread thin and are trying to keep the conflict from escalating, while still keeping an eye out for the influence of the dark side. Amidst all this, a string of mysterious kidnappings on the Outer Rim world of KO-35 has drawn the government to make an impassioned plea to the Jedi for help. In response, two Jedi have been dispatched -all the council can spare in these troubled times- to solve the mystery and bring those responsible to justice. |

Time just seemed to move so slowly. Why? Why was her master taking so long? Sometimes she wondered if she was forced to wait on purpose. It wasn't like she was the most patient of jedi, in fact, she was pretty much as far from an ideal jedi as one could get. She had a temper, was a bit impatient, refused to follow pretty much any number of rules. In fact, the young woman was pretty much ruled by her emotions. How many times had Master Yoda told her not to focus on them? Too many times to count. Sighing, the padawan shook her head and ran a slendor hand through her short, ebony hair. She looked up and down the hall for what felt like the millionth time and, to be honest, she was becoming highly annoyed. It took everything she had to not start pacing, which usually resulted in a few light weight items floating up into the air. Instead, she leaned back against the wall, the light hitting her hair in such a way that it looked blue, revealing her Kerovian heritage. Her foot began tapping on the floor while she subconciously bit her lower lip, a bad habit she had developed as a youngling. She was twenty-three, no longer thirteen and, in her mind, was ready for the trials. If only her master could understand that. Of course, her being in a hurry to become a knight probably had to do with a little secret that she had been keeping. One concerning an older knight. Realizing where her thoughts were going, she quickly shook her head as if to dispell the thoughts. The last thing she needed was a distraction. The sounds of voices sounded and she whiped her head in the direction they were coming from. It was a couple of padawans, most likely two of the few being trained by members of the council or perhaps they had just returned from a mission. Judging by their appearance, she estimated them to be about four-teen, possibly fifteen. Seeing as they weren't who she was waiting for, she turned away and watched the other end of the hall. As the young padawans passed by, she heard what they were whispering about. Irritation rose in her, causing her hands to form tight fists. Any jedi, even a youngling, would be able to sense her anger and likely go somewhere to avoid it. Those padawans thought she was their age. That she was a child! It was true, her petite frame and short stature gave off the illusion that she was still in her teens. That she could handle. She had always been short. Her delicate facial features and large, sapphire eyes added to the youthful appearance, not really something she could help. It wasn't her fault she looked so young. If she had a choice, she would look her true age, twenty-three. As if the comments about how she looked age-wise wasn't enough, one of them said she looked like a living corpse. No doubt, that was directed to her snow white skin and the dark circles under her eyes. Of course, if she didn't insist on wearing dark colored robes she probably wouldn't look as pale. Catching the glare from the young woman, the two padawans scurried away. A small smile formed on her lips as she sensed the trail of fear that they left within their wake. |

Striding quickly from the council chambers, Jedi master Vadril Rotcz'dyne swerved expertly around a fellow Jedi reading a datapad, not bothering to speak seeing as the knight was fully immersed in whatever it was he was reading. She was already late, having been caught up in briefings and the taxingly slow pace of the council. The Jedi master trying to keep up with her long legged-pace was not making her time-keeping any better. In fact she suspected even their travelling companion would be there already. Her fellow master's padawn if she wasn't mistaken. Unwanted, a sharp stab of sadness raced through the woman. She wished her own padawan was coming with her. But alas, he was a padawan no longer. In fact, he'd been knighted not two weeks ago. Now he was fully a member of the order, and a damn good one if she said so herself. He had come on in leaps and bounds, and she had been proud to be his master. Only now he had his own mission. Joruus C'Baoth's Outbound Flight project. Vadril frowned, blocking out the outside world and moving automatically as she mused. Long, grey-streaked black hair swung in a braid down her back as she again swerved, this time to dodge a pair of lively younglings scarpering to their next training session. She would've volunteered herself had this mission not cropped up. A mission to an Outer Rim world. KO-35 as it was known. Herself and two others. One padawan, one master. The only Jedi the council could afford to send in this tenuous state they found themselves in. Rumours of the Sith returning were rife within the Jedi temple, and the Force was rippling and fluctuating of late. Absently, Vadril drew her dark brown robes tighter about herself, as though warding off a phantom chill. Ah, she could see their third member now. "You padawan awaits, master." She inclined her head forward, watching as her travelling companion moved to greet the younger Jedi. Again the stab of longing returned, but she squashed it. She would have to get used to this, she reasoned. Either that or take on another apprentice. "Now that we're all here." She said softly, dark eyes fixing on the waiting, and distinctly annoyed looking padawan. "We should probably go, and try to make up lost time." Edited by Nihlus, Oct 31 2009, 05:15 PM.

Seeing the two older jedi approach, the young woman pushed herself from the wall. She had to force herself to calm down, which probably didn't look too successful. Well, at least she tried. A small smile formed on her face as a female Twilek approached. For a woman in her fifties, she was still quite spry and beautiful. "Sorry to have kept you waiting, Rina." The Twilek said as she approached. "It's alright, Master. I understand you had other things to attend to." The now named padawan said, bowing slightly. Of course, Rina knew that her master could see right through her. Jedi Master Twila Sonotous always knew when she was lying. The Twilek just chuckled, her pale blue skin standing out brightly against the tan colored robes she was wearing. She then turned to her companion. "Master Rotcz'dyne, allow me to introduce to you my padawan, Rina Dahok. Rina, this is Jedi Master Vadril Rotcz'dyne." Rina looked at the woman who had arrived with her master and bowed in greeting as well as respect. "It's an honor to meet you, Master Rotcz'dyne." She said. Well, at least no one could say that she wasn't polite to her elders. Her attention remained on the two older jedi as they spoke. "I agree." Twila stated. "It's going to be a long trip, after all. Rina kept silent as her master led the way down the hall. She hadn't been given any information in regards to the mission, but knew that it would come sooner or later. She just hoped it wouldn't be like the last mission, where she recieved all of her information last minute. |

Vadril winced inwardly as both Master Sonotous and the young woman stumbled over her surname. It was not an entirely elegant name, and the stop in the middle was difficult to get out properly. For her own race it was easy of course, the inner workings of the Frey'ai being slightly different to humans or Twi'leks. She let it go good naturedly, returning the padawan -Rina's- welcome with an understanding: "Please, Master Vadril will do fine. It's nice to meet you Rina." Rina was right, of course. they needed to get moving if they were to keep their deadline. Casting one last look around the academy, Vadril said a silent farewell then followed Twila and Rina down the hall to the hangar. --------------- The 'Reliant' was a freighter ship, large and unwieldy. A somewhat clunky ship for a Jedi she thought. Yet the ship was not their only transport. Several shuttles on board would be what would actually take them to KO-35. The freighter was on its way with several other knights to settle a dispute on the fringes of Republic space. Vadril and her two companions were just hitching a ride to conserve fuel. Since the freighter was passing by anyway it made a good deal of sense, especially considering how little storage capacity shuttles had. As for their way back, well they'd figure that out when it was time to leave. Returning on the same freighter was out of the question, since neither mission held a definite date of completion. Sitting in the guest quarters set up for travelling Jedi, Vadril held two datapads. One she had already finished with. The details of the planet they were visiting courtesy of the ship's navicomputer. The other was more personal. A message from her old padawan. Reading his comments, she allowed a small smile to soften her features. Apparently his own mission was to be underway soon. He sent her his best wishes, and the promise that upon his return they would meet and share stories. After the note he added a small footnote reminding her to stay away from cannoks. Chuckling at the in-joke, she stowed away both pads and her equipment, though she kept her lightsaber with her as always. She would not be caught without it. Allowing her curiosity to get the better of her, she stepped into the hallway with the intention of exploring the ship. She wondered if Twila and Rina were doing the same as she headed to the lower decks and engineering. |

After Twila had explained the mission to her padawan, Rina decided to go explore the ship. Unlike her master, the girl was always curious about things. She couldn't count the number of times she had been warned about it. However, it was like her temper and patience, uncontrolable. It had become a bit of a joke between her and those who knew her that her nose would likely end up cut off from sticking it where it shouldn't be. As she traveled down the hall, she thought about the prospect of going to KO-35. She knew it had been her home planet before being taken in by the jedi. She had only been about three years old at that time, so didn't really have any real memories from it. That didn't mean that there weren't some memories, though. The young woman pulled herself from her thoughts when she saw Master Vadril coming towards her. She felt embarressed that she had failed so badly at pronouncing the older woman's name, but was thankful that she hadn't been scolded about it. There had been a few other masters who had had difficult names and she had been heavily scolded for not showing the proper respect. As though it was her fault. Seven year olds aren't very good with pronounciations, after all. "Master Vandril, have you settled in alright?" She inquired when she was close enough. |

"Yes Rina, thank you." The older Jedi smiled warmly. Apparently this young woman was as curious as Vadril herself was. "I trust you have also settled in well?" Yet there was something else. Perhaps...the destination? She was picking up a sort of fluctuation in Rina's feelings. "You are not at peace padawan." The Frey'ai pointed out, brows furrowing but not sounding stern or reprimanding. "Even if you are a padawan, you must still strive to maintain control of your emotions. Through you the Force flows and embraces your surroundings. If you are uncertain or troubled, it spreads through the Force." She felt like she was teaching again, a thought that reminded her this was not her pupil and that she was technically meddling. Still, she gave what guidance she could, as was her duty as an older more experienced member of the order. "I was heading down to take a look at the lower levels." She said, abruptly changing tactics. Perhaps if the two of them walked she would learn more about her companion. "Perhaps you would care to join me? I am actually quite curious about the planet we're visiting. Master Sonotous informs me this KO-35 is your birth planet." Which explained why not many of Rina's species were found in the Republic core worlds. Something Vadril herself could relate to quite well. Her own species being one that actually made their home in the Unknown Regions. Her parents had merely travelled more extensively than her fellows and arrived on Coruscant, where they were discovered to have latent Force sensitivity. Their child, naturally, inherited it. |

Rina gave a small nod, indicating she had already settled in. "My master decided to rest a bit before we had to use the shuttles." She explained. The padawan hadn't even noticed she was at unease, although she normally was to begin with. She didn't mind that it was noticed, especially since it was on her mind to begin with. She did, however, bite her lower lip. The idea of returning to the place of her birth was un-nerving and she didn't have any idea on how to calm herself. "I am aware, Master Vadril." She said in a soft voice. "I'll do my best to calm down." Although the tone used had not been a scolding one, unlike how Master Sonotous had often scolded her for not keeping her emotions in check. Because of that, her tone was that of a child who had been scolded, even if she didn't intend for it to come out as such. She was grateful for the change of subject and agreed to go with the older jedi, seeing as she was curious about the lower levels as well. "To be honest.....I don't remember much about KO-35." She admitted. "I was so young that the few memories I have are of my mother." Though she was technically a human, like most of the jedi she knew, she was still seen as a seperate race. It made since, seeing as her entire race was force sensitive. The main reason that so few were within the order wasn't because of the fact they were in the outer rim, but because Kerovians had little trust in the jedi and prefered to have nothing to do with them. Why, she didn't know for certain. However, she had seen some of the tactics used to talk a family into giving up a force sensitive child and she could understand why anyone wouldn't trust them right away. |

Vadril sighed wistfully as they picked their way down the levels and wove through the milling crewmembers. Most of them parted without prompt. Being a Jedi gave you the aura of authority needed to divide waves of people by mere presence alone. It was only the ones too engrossed in their work that failed to move aside, but Vadril wasn't so self-centered as some Jedi. She did not push them aside, instead choosing to go out of her way around them. "I do sometimes envy those who know what their home planet looks like." She admitted. And it was a dangerous one, admitting envy. Jealousy. It led to hate. Which in turn led to suffering and the Dark Side. Yet even Jedi were mortal and felt things. It was merely the fact that they controlled their feelings. For the most part. Some small echoes sometimes slipped through, like now. "I often find myself wondering what the home planet of my species is like. You should count yourself lucky Rina. You will be able to see it again. With the eyes of a Jedi. Eyes that are truly open to the wonders of the galaxy." Down in the lower levels it was stuffier than the rest of the ship. The mass of work crews and sheer heat of machinery creating an almost uncomfortable warmth. Letting out a quiet 'phew' Vadril cast off her outer robe and folded it over one arm. Yet as she did so a small crystal tumbled out of one of the pockets inside the robe and clattered to the floor. Frowning, the Jedi master bent to retrieve it, casting a quick look around to make sure no-one had seen. It was a smooth crystal, yellowish white in colour. For all intents and purposes a normal gemstone. Yet Vadril treated it with care and almost reverence. Heading out of the crowd, and motioning for Rina to follow, she ducked into a solitary space not populated by crewmembers. Once she was sure no-one but Rina was nearby, she picked out the crystal and inspected it closely, keeping an eye out for any scratches or malformations. At last, satisfied that it had not been damaged, she held the crystal aloft for ina to inspect. "A lightsaber crystal." She informed the padawan. "Like the one that powers your own blade." |

Rina didn't seem to notice the people as they made way for her and Master Vadril. Then again, she was the kind of girl who would rather not be noticed to that extent. Even as a jedi, she was the kind of person who prefered things to be simple. Though her clothing was black and fit her body more closely than what most jedi wore, it was still quite plain. A few people didn't move aside, but she just walk right around them. Not like she minded. She looked over as the older jedi spoke to her. She had never about the terms such as jealousy or envy. In truth, she often had those feelings as well. The only reason she didn't get angry about it was because she never had any reason. Yes, she felt a little depressed to not have a clear memory of her own world, but that was no fault to anyone else. In a way, she was lucky because she didn't remember it and was less likely to feel homesick. "Perhaps." She said in a soft voice. Master Vadril might be right about seeing her home world, but that didn't mean it would be easy for her. Especially if she happen to meet with her mother. The heat of the lower levels made it a little difficult to breath, which seemed to always happen in heavy heat for her. Carefully, she shrugged off her own robe and casually crumpled it up in her arms to carry. She blinked when she heard something hit the floor and looked over, a curious expression on her face. The girl wondered why the jedi master was being so careful with it, but then she couldn't see it too clearly right yet. She followed Vadril to an empty spot and took a closer look at the gemstone. Though she wasn't keen on the color, she did find it to be pretty. Her expression was one of confusion. Though she had constructed her own lightsaber from scratch, something had had been quite difficult for her, she never once saw a crystal that wasn't inside one of the graceful weapons. "Where did you find it?" She asked, not thinking it might be rude or inappropriate to ask. In her mind, one didn't learn without asking questions. |
