First and foremost, it is mandatory to know that the Black Dragon Knights are a self-contained, sovereign and politically neutral military organization that is focused on finding talented individuals -often in social disadvantage-, then training them to become worthy of pairing up with a pure-bred black dragon of the Order and earn the right to wield order magic and the order-enhanced weaponry unique to them. Indifferent of persona and background, the Order accepts anyone willing to join and subdue themselves to their intense, rigorous and secret training methods. In exchange, they offer a home, food and a family. Whatever the reasons, supplicants must leave their past lives behind and begin a new identity once they begin their training. Should they fail, they may never return to the grounds of their trial and never speak of the training methods -both under pain of death. As for the premises themselves, they are foretelling of the Order itself: the thick stone walls, carved pillars with mighty braziers blazing at their feet; the metal chains running across the length of the walls -sided by banners and standards- rattle, as the slow breeze flows across the tall, gothic hallways that arc upward like the interiors of cathedrals. All in the founding spirit of a bastion of might and discipline, it also relates to the spartan and simplistic nature of the philosophies underlying the Order's foundation and functions. These philosophies are contained in small proverbs and maxims that are frequently encountered in daily life. "Waste not, want not"; "Take with one hand, give with the other"; Without zeal, courage is worthless Without courage, discipline is worthless Without discipline, your life is worthless. Recruitment When a recruit arrives at the gates of the Black Fortress, they are sent to an inspection committe when they enter. Skills such as quick thinking, general lore and wisdom are tested through questioning. This is also a good opportunity for senior members to scout for apprentices should the recruit in question pass the Rites of Initiation. Once the committee has concluded the examination of all recruits, they are sent to their first test. The Gauntlet Recruits are sent into a sophisticated contraption armed with all manner of traps. They must navigate through this tunnel of death on their own -timing, good reflexes and awareness is key to surviving. The Pit Once passed The Gauntlet, recruits find themselves plunged into the middle of a circular, spiked wall arena. There, they will be given the traditional weaponry used by the Order, which they will employ to defeat the wild animals that will appear from trap doors below the Pit. Recruits are expected to recognize that on their own, they would perish, and quickly form an effective team to repel the beasts. The Pit tests one's skill to quickly organize, recuperate and coordinate a counter offensive. The Drag As the last beast is slain, one of The Pit's walls is lowered to reveal a long stairway that will lead recruits to a large cubical chamber deep within the bowels of the Fortress. This time, speed and endurance is of the essence, as they course through the 5 mile obstacle-ridden winding stairway. A heavy metal door will shut out the last five runners from the final chamber and the remainder of the training. These will be escorted from the grounds accordingly. The Wall The cubical chamber where the recruits arrive is the place of their next test. The chamber starts filling up with water, and the only way out is upward through the 100 feet that separate them from the next trial. Three of the four walls of the chamber are polished smooth, only one being able to be scaled. Recruits must keep their calm and use their strength wisely if they are to succeed. The Ascension Once the recruits climb out of the water chamber, they find themselves in the middle of a vast enclosed arena, where they are followed by the Arch Knight and the senior members of the Order. A gong is sounded as the last recruit emerges from the chamber. A door with thick metal bars slides into place and the water is quickly drained from the chamber below. The recruits' final test commences. They are given a choice: take a large sum of gold with them and leave the Fortress forever; or refuse to take the gold and stay to live a life of poverty within the Fortress. Those who chose the gold are escorted out of the Fortress accordingly, whereas the other are assembled before the Arch Knight. One by one, they step up and kneel before their future lord. The Initiation Once before the Arch Knight, the Words of Initiation are spoken. "You leave behind a world of greed, corruption and filth. A world of comfort, of plenty, a world you called 'home'. Do you leave your burden and body behind?" "- I leave my burden and body behind, in a world of greed, corruption, filth and comfort, plenty, my home." "You leave behind a world of prejudice, of fear and of madness. A world of affection, of trust, a world you called 'self'. Do you leave your shackles and mind behind?" "- I leave my shackles and mind behind, in a world of prejudice, fear, madness and affection, trust, my self." "You enter a world of poverty, pain and suffering. A world of honesty, of contentness, a world you will call 'home'. Do you take this discipline upon you?" "- I take discipline upon me, entering a world of poverty, pain, suffering and honesty, contentness, my home." "You enter a world of war, struggle and strife. A world of duty, of glory, a world you will call 'self' Do you take this honor within you?" "- I take honor within me, entering a world of war, sturggle, strufe and duty, glory, my self." "I now invite you to die and be reborn as one of us. If your words were true, fear will leave you, never to return. A dragon you will be bound with -to serve you, and you serve him- 'til Death do you part. Open your arms wide, and receive the blessing of our Order!" In turn, all recruits are impaled by the Arh Knight's sword through their chests, channeling his order magic into the victim and unleashing all of the seals that were once dormant within the body. As the last of them lies cold on the ground, the arena's massive ceiling opens to shower the chamber in the outside world as the bodies are stretched out at the very center of the ring. It is now that the massive black dragons descend from above, each landing next to their respective rider. And accompanying them are new drakes that have followed the recruits closely and have now chosen their riders. The largest and eldest of them, the great black dragon that is none other than the Arch Knight's companion begins reciting words in an ancient draconic tongue. The bodies then begin to levitate and form a circle around the center of the arena as arcane lines appear across the arena, the walls and the bodies themselves as well as the dragons that have yet to be bound. The Binding Each of the marked dragons takes up their place before the initiates and begin to chant in unison. A brightly glowing, dark red strand of energy forms at their chests that automatically seeks the chest of the chosen initiate. Once it touches the skin, it seeps into their very soul, yanking it back from the clutches of death. This is the only time the link between rider and dragon is visible. Now bound to a dragon of their own, they become Riders. In a blinding flash, the surroundnings are covered by a crimson light, fading as suddenly as it burst. Immediately, the two feel like they have known each other a life time -their thoughts, their experiences, their very beings shared instantly. It is a peerless moment for both rider and dragon. After basic training and the conclusion of the initiation- and binding ceremonies, Initiates are offered a choice between one of the three specializations within the Order. Classes Shatterer ![]() The Way of the Shatterer was the first to be established alongside the founding of the Order by the First Arch Knight. Shatterers specialize in delivering extremely potent blows to destroy resistance and kill with a single, powerful blow of their claymores. Wearing heavy armor to deflect enemy retaliation, Shatterers can sweep a battlefield clean of enemy formations, disrupting and pummeling entire platoons and war machines to dust. They are the relentless wrecking balls of the Order. Arbalest ![]() The Way of the Arbalest is a stark contrast to the original Shatterer. Favoring the heaviest armor available, they give up speed for mobility and raw, physical power. Employing their fearsome triple heavy crossbows, they have astonishing range and accuracy and are also capable of holding their own in close combat thanks to their hefty sized halberds and glaives. They are the feared marksmen of the Order. Warfrenzy ![]() The Way of the Warfrenzy is the most recent school to emerge. Driven by the need for a fast, mobile and versatile commando unit, the Wafrenzy was born. Wearing only minimal armor, Warfrenzies give up the brawn of their counterparts for exceptional speed and endurance. Employing both dual blades and wrist-mounted crossbows, they are prepared for anything thrown at them. Some say Warfrenzies are utterly untouchable when they begin deflecting incoming attacks. They are the unleashed fury of the Order. |
