You were injured unnecessarily, he enunciated every word and paid special effort on a single one. If this continues, I’ll have to be far away from you. I don’t know if it is possible for you to find a way to stop it, but when we get back, Mirai will take a look at you. Sayuri looked up in alarm as she exclaimed, "N-No!" Then she covered her hand over her mouth for saying something so impulsive. "Forgive me, but I guess it had to be only that one moment because Adrienne had taken over… This is the first time that it's ever manifested like the way it had. I hadn't gotten hurt when you had those injuries from those…" her voice faltered on a single word, "assassins… Nor had I felt any sort of pain when I was awake. I had always gotten dreams regarding this sort of thing..." She blinked and looked down, hoping that would explain things a little bit more clearly to him. Mirai taking a look at her would probably only confuse her. Sayuri sighed at the idea, seeing as the Tenarins had no idea how those who are mages work. Although, Sayuri had to wonder; why had it been only that moment while Adrienne had taken possession over her body like that? Why had it been only that one time where she had actually gotten to the point where she received injuries like that? Why had Adrienne taken over in the first place? She felt the heat of his breath from his nostrils, closing her eyes momentarily at the surprise he had given her. She opened her eyes slowly when it stopped and looked up at Shura. She wondered if he liked… smelling her. It was true that a part of her scent was mixed in with the magical energies she had, not to mention, she was more "earthy" smelling in comparison to half the females of the Ranian court. They drowned themselves in so much perfume, that Sayuri always had to hold her breath when they walked by. However, some of the nicer girls had often complimented her for her more "natural" smell or scent or whatever. They had said it was always the smell of something subtle, like a flower. Sayuri paled slightly at the sight that Mirai appeared to them in. Her healer instincts urged her to heal her, to help her in some way. “It took a while for me to chance on the right direction to find you. I had been walking for a while,” she said a touch breathily. Her voice was quiet, just above a whisper and she appeared to be trying to speak in whispers. “The healer says my ears will heal, though whether or not I can still hear as clearly, I’ll have to hope and see. I can’t raise my voice... it hurts if I do, so pardon me.” "Would it be all right if I heal your ears instead of waiting for it naturally?" She felt sad that Mirai had to wait awhile to heal her ears, especially since she was in pain whenever she spoke loudly, or worst yet, in her normal voice. I am sorry to have you hurt again, in the process. Then he lightened his tone. But I swear it wasn’t my doing. I don’t scream like that. Sayuri only glanced at Shura for a moment before turning back to Mirai. She watched as Mirai tossed Shura his clothes, while she retorted that he ought to just get dressed. She blinked when Mirai turned her way, commenting about how she herself wasn't normal that morning. Sayuri looked almost dark for a moment as she considered the past events. Adrienne had spoken for her, in her defense; helping her almost, in spite of what kind of personality she had. She was evil, Sayuri admitted, and was a bit contradicting. Adrienne still and foremost had been the most… exasperating person she's met; after all, she's done things that made Sayuri have to put seals on her own body, thanks to the aid of the other Mages of the Rania court… but it wasn't pleasant either. "I guess I wasn't," she murmured. She looked at Mirai with a wary gaze. "Adrienne isn't me, so there was no way that I was myself this morning; she had taken possession of my body." She wondered if Mirai would believe her. Shura didn't seem like he believed her at all; in fact, he laughed, breaking what little left of her heart she had even left. "Shura doesn't believe me though, so… why should you? Are you willing to believe that someone else had taken possession of my body?" Her eyes appeared sad, almost heartbroken when she tried to smile at Mirai. But she told herself to cheer up, that it was inevitable anyway… for they were going to leave each other's side sooner or later. No one ever stays at my side… no one. For a moment, her eyes appeared hollow, dead, and broken. But her eyes brightened a little bit when she waited for Mirai's response. Her hand came up and grabbed her elbow, giving a sort of sense of vulnerability. She had nothing left but to try and live, not for anyone else, but for herself. But she knew it was impossible. With the rate of her health of stress and constant worry, not to mention the nightmares she kept receiving of the murders, and finally, her emotional state regarding Shura. Her heart was incredibly broken, and she knew that she'd cry herself to sleep for a long time: a broken heart, a horrific nightmare, her tattoo, her prophecy, and the knowing that she would always be alone. Everyone she had loved was no longer; her love for Shura was unrequited, leaving no one else that was human to love her back… well, at least the kind of love that she wanted from another. She wanted nothing to do right then and there, but to disappear forever. Shura didn't need her, nor did anyone else for that matter, especially after she had finished her duty. * * * “That should have been my question to you. Your wife appears upset- if I might be so bold; I hope it is nothing of consequence,” he said sincerely. Tryst said nothing, but only listened. His eyes were blank, his smile unfamiliar, "It is nothing that you may concern yourself with; don't worry." Then he smiled sincerely before he observed the expression that appeared on Jegan's face. The final expression made Tryst feel almost sympathetic toward him, but the question almost startled him. What was Jegan thinking about? “How do you know, Tryst...” he asked wonderingly, “that she is the one? Have you ever thought you couldn’t decide between two?” Tryst looked thoughtful before answering, "When you only want to spend the rest of your life with her." However, this made Tryst curious. Was he really thinking about two different women? Jegan? The guy who seemed only dedicated to one girl? And who only seemed to fancy one girl? Amused and glad for a change of topic that was not on himself, Tryst asked, "Who are the women you're thinking about? I didn't expect someone like you to fancy two women." He's lucky though, he thought blankly. He may be a Rune Knight that is a type of soldier for the king, but he wasn't the like the kind I was… He'd probably make a better husband that I'd ever am… Seryel… why? You must know that my viewpoints are practically engraved… After all, you found me the way I was before… so you know just how terrible I used to be… especially with how I viewed the world. |

He was taken aback by her reaction to his insistence. Her flustered attempts sounded more like pleadings for him to forgive a mistake. The assurances he was ready to give were halted at the tip of his tongue when Mirai arrived. Was she hiding something, or was it fear? He couldn’t tell, but he’d grudgingly conceded to the nudge of his conscience, that she shouldn’t have to spill all her innards for him to see. He was simply tired of suspicion, tired of resisting, weary and stricken whenever his charge suffered under his guard. No matter what he did to shield her, there was always something what would slip him by. Heaving a sigh of resignation, Shura stood rigidly against the rough tide of transformation. When bones had snapped into place, feathers and fur receded into skin, he was left shuddering from the remaining spasms of pain. Resistance had always been more painful. Surrender would have made the change swifter, fluid, but in exchange for a less graceful show. Slowly uncurling his spine from his crouch, he took the clothes and wrung them out before putting them on. Mirai had been meticulous- she had brought his small clothes. Mirai nearly beamed at the ambassador when she offered to heal her ears. She had not expected it, having assumed that healing magic was very different compared to purely mana driven ones. It was all speculation; there were no mages for her to affirm her guesses. Or perhaps one mage could wield both spirit and mana. Maybe spirit wasn’t needed at all, unlike runic magic. That would be formidable- extremely formidable. “I would appreciate that more than you know.” She sobered watched the ambassador in a new light when the girl put so much emotion in her voice, her face and wore anguish like a cape over her shoulders. Well. From what she had seen and heard from Shura, the girl was possibly smitten with him. But this... she didn’t know how to put it. Mirai could sense the loss that resulted from rejection and sadness... and immense amount of it. Heartbroken? Quite positively so. She had the desire to reach out and comfort the poor soul. But truthfully, Mirai didn’t know how to receive such a confirmation. Could she entrust this girl with Shura’s happiness? Mirai was quiet for a while. Her gaze was angled downward, fixed on nothing as she contemplated. Even if she could, how could they be together at all? His Highness wouldn’t simply let Shura go. Neither would he allow a Ranian mage to remain unchecked. Tenarin was no safe place for any mage. How would it work? And what of the mage’s condition? Two souls in one body? Mirai couldn’t see any good to come out of their relationship. But she was probably casting an unfair judgement. She cared more for Shura, than a stranger. She wanted him happy. Mirai was looking at things in one angle, she knew, and it was inaccurate most of the time. “Contrary to what you think, my lady, he does believe you. He knows. He couldn’t be sure what was happening to you until I confirmed it,” Mirai spoke and a small wry smile curved her lips, “We are not completely ignorant." With a sigh, she decided the girl deserved at least some sympathy. “He likes you enough to care, and broke two of my doors to get to you because you had fainting spells.” She shook her head in amusement. “I can’t say he knows how to treat any soul with a gentle hand. But he tries. And sometimes... one desire and another drive cannot run the same course.” Mirai bit her lip and nearly cursed when she saw Shura approach them slowly behind the ambassador. She hoped he hadn’t heard all that. Shura’s expression was passive. He approached her, nearly brushing shoulders with the ambassador and dropped a fistful of black feathers in her hand. “I had to put the creature down. It’s buried under a severed tree. You should probably take a look at it. It’s not natural. Someone’s behind this creature’s birth,” he said simply. “That can wait, though. You need rest.” -------------------------------------------------- Jegan shook his head and chuckled wryly. “Someone like me? I am not as innocent as I look.” But then he sighed, leaning forward to rest his elbows on his knees. He had expected some sort of a similar answer Tryst had given. And as he had expected, it was of little help and barely of any comfort at all. “I am afraid disclosing their identity will put me at a disadvantage. I can’t tell you that. Besides, who they are, is none of your concern. I am asking for your advice... because I believe you have much more experience in this than I do.” Jegan had wished it was that simple- to like one and no other. But his heart had chosen to be fickle. There was no way he could school his feelings. They would be false otherwise. “What if... you can see yourself spending your life with either of them? How do you decide? Have you ever experienced what I am before? I don’t know if I am asking the right person for advice.” He was stuck in a predicament, after all. Who better to answer it than someone who had been in it. No point trying to wrench an answer out of the inn keeper if he didn’t have an answer at all. Edited by Seiss, Mar 20 2010, 09:00 AM.

For a moment, Sayuri wondered if she should have spoken out like she had. Or even at all. It felt like Shura was at a loss now as to what to do when it came to her. Perhaps she really ought to quiet herself in concerns… but she remembered the words he said awhile ago: "Tell me everything, let me help." It's useless anyway; you just don't know what to do when I'm… hurt… she thought. It would explain a lot of things, in her opinion, about Shura. Because she was so delicate, so fragile, was the reason why he wasn't sure how to treat her. Maybe, she ought to finish this mission as quickly as she can so that she can leave him in peace. It only seemed like she was an annoyance to him, as much as that pains her to even think it. Perhaps she ought to rethink her ways of going to sleep as to not wake up with nightmares from that man. “I would appreciate that more than you know.” "Shall I heal them now or when we're back at your home?" she asked with her hands now behind her back as she looked curiously around now, her emotions reined in. She listened to the rest of her words about him and only sighed. She didn't reply to Mirai's statement as Shura appeared almost right after she had finished. She was doubtful, however, that Shura would want to release her from the haunting of Adrienne. It was sort of the same with the griffin of Shura, but, if the griffin and he are one and the same, then, is it really a curse? To her, she thinks it's a blessing because he would have the power to protect his loved ones and even more if he tried. The power is immense, almost as strong as her own, but she knew her own came at a price. Sayuri watched as Shura dropped a handful of black feathers into her hand. She watched warily, for any sign in his expression to show that he heard what Mirai had said. Something bothered her again about the sort of relationship they had with each other, but it wasn't strong as before. Well, it was still considerably strong, but… somewhere inside of her, she knew that she had already given up. * * * “Someone like me? I am not as innocent as I look.” Tryst only raised an eyebrow as he continued to listen. Unable to tell him who the females were? Then they must be someone he knew, otherwise, he would have told him. Surprising. Then again, Tryst rarely knew people that were in the same circle as Jegan. So this left a few possibilities that he thought about. Tryst almost laughed humorlessly when Jegan had said that he appeared to have more experience in love than Jegan did. He did anyway, albeit softly. The next few words caught him a little off guard. “What if... you can see yourself spending your life with either of them? How do you decide? Have you ever experienced what I am before? I don’t know if I am asking the right person for advice.” Tryst looked at Jegan for a moment before thinking. "Liking or even having affections for two people is what proves that the heart is fickle. As my one neighbor had once said, 'If they were both hanging from a cliff, who would you save?' Of course, that's not very reasonable, in my opinion. However, I suppose you could always weigh the pros and cons of those of your affection… if could." Tryst shrugged. He ignored answering the question in regards to if he had ever been in that situation. Tryst was reminiscent of his past, before he became a soldier. It had been a short time, however, before he did become a soldier… However, he pulled himself out of it quickly enough to not show a moment of emotion that Jegan didn't need to worry about. |

Her hand closed on the feathers and slipped them into her pocket. She couldn’t quite catch everything the ambassador said, but caught muted snatches of ‘heal’ and ‘back home’. So Mirai dipped her head in apology and said, “When we are at home, then.” She turned to Shura, then, all pleasantries flung carelessly aside to fix him a stern glare. “Yes, I need rest. But that can wait. You have all your priorities backwards when it comes to women, don’t you? This can’t wait. Some animal could have eaten the corpse if I wait.” Mirai managed to suppress a wince. Her voice had risen in volume to express her irritation. The thrum was piercing. “Lead the way, Shura. I’ll take a look at it now.” He stared at her with pursed lips and slightly furrowed brows, then sighed and shook his head. “As you command, my lady,” he said mockingly, with an amused smile at the corner of his lips. Shura’s gaze drifted towards the mage and realized she was watching, red eyes warm liquid and... timid? He didn’t want her to see the fledgling’s body. She felt too deeply for creatures like him. Leaving her alone, however, was not an option. He knew, that the moment he turned his back, she would be in trouble. Fate or misfortune, whatever it was the universe had, would snatch her up given the chance. Heaving a sigh, he nodded at her and gestured for her to follow. Mirai followed him as he led the way, gathering her skirts in one hand to the side so the twisted roots and fallen branches wouldn’t snag the hem. The pace Shura set was considerate. She didn’t have to hurry to catch up. It didn’t take long for them to reach a hunched and heavily weathered tree. The mound of freshly dug dirt was just barely above ground level, as if it had been deliberately levelled. Dropping onto a crouch, Shura brushed away the dead leaves picked up a fallen branch. “I suppose you need me to dig it up?” Nodding slowly, Mirai affirmed, “Yes, please.” He huffed in exasperation but promptly stuck the branch into the earth to make a small groove. Griffin claws would have made the job much easier. Human hands were just too small and too slow. Still, Shura dug and shovelled the earth away. He had buried it deep to conceal the actual size of it. When he almost uncovered the body, however, the layer of earth suddenly sank and crumbled a few good inches down. He frowned. The body couldn’t have decomposed that fast. Cautiously, he brushed the remaining earth away. “Oh god...” Mirai gasped, her wide eyed stare was filled with horror. The fledgling’s body was not there. Instead, a scrawny, naked corpse of an emaciated boy lay curled on its side, neck broken. His hands fisted, not caring if he held only dirt. “It was the griffin fledgling when I killed it.” --------------------------------------------------- Jegan sighed. “Women... all bring trouble to a man’s heart,” he muttered. If the two did jump down cliffs, he’d try to save one and jump after the other. How was that supposed to help? The timid footfalls alerted them of Seryel’s return. She appeared cold and troubled. Jegan didn’t believe everything was fine with the couple. Tryst could hide it, but Seryel couldn’t. He doubted she could even if she tried. Rubbing her arms to gain some warmth, she marched determinedly to the saddlebags Tryst shared with her and pulled out all the supplies of herbs they’d packed. Some other plants could be used as substitutes with the right amount and mixture. She would not think of Tryst now. Not now. After this, she would apologize to him- after she secured Resee’s life. |

"Understood," Sayuri nodded. She then watched the exchange between Mirai and Shura, noting quietly the change in attitude that Mirai showed. She couldn't help but see that Mirai had winced when her voice raised in volume to show her annoyance. She smiled softly when she saw the amusement in his eyes, but her smile disappeared when he looked her way. She didn't know what to think of his gaze and looked away when she felt the sharp stab of pain in her chest. She couldn't look at Shura's golden eyes without feeling that painful pang. Quietly, she clutched at the clothes around her chest, as if trying to ease the pain. She heard the sigh from Shura and looked up in time to see him nod to follow them. She realized that she had been spacing out and had not exactly heard their conversation, thus, she realized as they were walking that they were heading toward the place that Shura had buried the fledgling. Following him wasn't as bad as before, where Shura usually was more brisk in his walking, but this time, it was as if it was in consideration for Mirai. It wasn't long until they came to what looked like disturbed soil, but it was barely off the ground, and it was leveled off. She watched as he dug with his hands to get to the corpse. She mildly thought of how much faster it would have been if he had used his griffin claws instead. Sayuri heard a sound that was a cross between a scream of horror and a cry, only to realize that it was herself who made that sound as the body was uncovered. She covered her mouth to turn away as she walked over to the tree to puke. She felt like her insides had been thrown outside of her and when she felt like she could breathe again without throwing up, she walked back over just enough to hear Shura speak. “It was the griffin fledgling when I killed it.” She couldn't speak or even utter another sound. She looked to Mirai to see what she would say about this before she looked toward Shura to whisper almost softly as realization dawned across her face as she looked more closely at the body. "That's the boy I saw back in the library..." She paled significantly as the truth of those words made her want to hurl her insides out again. Her hand covering her mouth, she took a step back and then another until she tripped over a rock, remembering the image of the boy being taken away who had acted like a drunk. She remembered the feeling and similarity of the presence of the body, of the boy she had seen at the library, despite the distance that she couldn't really see the face. * * * Tryst only nodded his in agreement, but couldn't help but wonder. If he hadn't met Seryel, he wondered what kind of person he would have became. He heard her footsteps before he saw her and looked up to find her rubbing to give herself some warmth. He resisted the urge to walk over to her and give her an embrace. He noted that she had pulled out her supplies of herbs that she had collected. She had come back bare handed, giving him the impression that the herb she was looking for was not to be found. Maybe he should have told her about Resee's condition... but... it was not his business and she looked like she tried her best to hide that condition, just like Seryel tried to hide the pain of the "antidotes" for her poisoned body. He flinched, realizing that they were loitering and wasting time, but they ought to rest... The only thing he wanted to do was save Seryel, even if it meant costing him his life... |
