Tryst had just finished setting the horses up for travel when he felt the familiar arms of his wife wrap around him. He was caught off guard and turned to look down at her when he felt that same ache again. He twisted himself around and wrapped his own arms around her. His arms wrapped around her torso and lifted her off her feet as he embraced her before kissing her softly on the lips. "Did you eat?" he asked softly, knowing that she might not have eaten properly for the last few days. Swiftly, he set her up on the horse and went to check that the inn was locked, and then climbed up behind her. His arms were still wrapped around her firmly as he pulled out her traveling cloak and placed it over her shoulders as he did with his own. If Seryel looked closely enough, she would have found his two blades strapped to the side of his hips. "Please have one of those vials I know you made... I want all the more time for you to be with me." With that, he kissed her softly next to her eyes as the horse moved forward. When he watched her drink it down, he pulled her close with one hand and then made the horse speed up into a run as the horse practically almost launched themselves out into their run as their cloaks billowed out behind them. He held her tight to him, so that she would not fall as the horse ran. Tryst had glanced back several times to check if Resee and Jegan were coming with. Whether or not she was going to feel the effects of the vial, he knew he would not see, for his gentle hold on Seryel was steady enough that she did not feel most of the rough bumps that a normal rider would feel. He knew that the were not going to stop for awhile until the horses would need some rest before they would continue on. -------------- Puzzlement appeared on her face when she noticed that they were not going through the plains but realized that the idea was a bad one anyway. They'd be sitting ducks out there if they were to go out there. She watched and followed as they went into an area that seems to have not been used in so many years as they ventured into an area of overgrown thickets and growing grass. She looked towards him when he took the reins from her hands and tied it to his saddle and then dismounted. “We’ll camp here for now. It’s too late to enter. It takes a day to pass through,” he told her, helping her down her horse. She watched as he walked over to her side and then spoke. As his hands went underneath her cloak to hold her sides as he helped her down, she reached over to hold his shoulders for support as she came down to the ground. "And you know this how?" she asked. She had removed her hood to look around her as they had come into the thickets, and prepared to push herself off slightly so that she could be placed on the ground. Her heart raced as her feet touched the ground. For that split moment, he held her in the air as if they were almost like waltzing. When she looked up to thank Shura for helping her down, her eyes locked with his golden ones and she flushed. Eve only viewed from a nearby tree and picked at her feathers as she watched. She knew that Sayuri was denying her feelings for her bodyguard. Deeply denying them. She could see the way that Sayuri sometimes looked at Shura, a longing and yearning sort of expression that she bet that Sayuri herself wasn't even aware of. However, the times she showed that expression was rare and it was only during the moments in the ride of when Shura would be focused on his own thoughts. Eve only wondered when and how Sayuri would realize her feelings for him. He will eventually leave me, they all do. Something in her heart cracked and she turned her gaze away as she pulled herself away. "I'll go get the firewood then," she murmured as she walked over to the edge of the somewhat clearing and began to pick them up. When the fire was roaring to keep them warm for the night, and they had finished their meal for the night, Sayuri stared blankly into the fire, immersed in her own thoughts. She sat curled up with her knees up to her chin, her arms wrapped around her legs. Her eyes appeared blank and distant. She was thinking about the castle back in Rania.... "Lovely of you to be here, Lady Sayuri," a woman of short stature said to her. Sayuri only had glanced at the woman once before turning away. She didn't notice the slight glare that the woman had towards Sayuri as she headed towards the garden. Then Sayuri stopped when she caught sight of two people in a corner, leaning against a fountain doing something. When she sneaked closer, she noticed that they were heavily kissing each other. Sayuri's face blushed vividly at the intensity and at how the male was kissing the female. She ran away when the kissing had gotten too intense for her to watch anymore. She had seen the ring on the female's finger and recognized the female. She knew that the two of them had only recently gotten engaged... When she snapped out of her reverie, she looked around herself as she realized she was back in Tenarin. Her reminiscing had been short and she found herself at a question back to that night of the Inmoret Festival. She wondered mildly what a kiss meant should mean if it were exchanged on that night. She turned her gaze towards Shura and pondered a moment on whether or not to ask him about it. Plucking up her courage as she took a deep breath, she asked in a soft and shy voice, "Shura, you never answered my question... on the night of the Inmoret Festival." Her face had turned cherry red as she remembered again their exchanges. |

Gather firewood? That was his job, but before he could stop her, she was already searching the ground and bending down to pick up dried branches. As long as she didn’t wander far, he didn’t mind. It was early evening. While she set the branches in a pile, he contented himself with unrolling their mats, arranging them close to each other, but with enough space so she wouldn’t think he was trying to take advantage of her. Though he would love to. Shura eyed the mat sullenly and swept his eyes over their surroundings. He couldn’t decide if he should hunt or just grab some beef jerky from their pack. Eventually they settled for dried bread and some jerky. The fishes tasted better, he noted, but it wasn’t too bad. When they had finished their food, he sat silently on his mat, staring at the flames, lost in his own thoughts. His lifted a hand absently and toyed with the chain on his neck, slipping his index finger occasionally into the ring. Twenty four years of lies. Of falsehood. He didn’t feel resentful but merely lost. He must have known that Rania would search for him. Rania was home. Tenarin wasn’t. Not really. So now here was his ticket- the Mage, a chance to go back home. But the slow recognition of his task made it impossible to accept. He had taken so many lives… so many innocents of this country that he felt indebted to Tenarin. He sighed mentally and lifted his gaze to observe the Mage. There was a pretty tint of red on her cheeks. He wanted to press his hands on either of her cheeks and feel the warmth of her blush. He was thinking too much like a human. Even his desires have changed, it seemed. He was not human. These impulses wouldn’t be good for the Mage or him. "Shura, you never answered my question... on the night of the Inmoret Festival." That surprised him. Shura wondered why she was to persistent. “It’s just an old legend, one of the Tenarin folklores. Don’t think too much about it,” he waved it off nonchalantly. “Most of the promises of the rose arch don’t come true anyway. Not unless the people themselves want it to work. Gods don’t plot romances or true love, you know. We have to make it work ourselves.” He shrugged. “I kissed you because I didn’t want that tramp to do it. And because I wanted to. Inmoret didn’t have much to do with it.” |

Inmoret didn’t have much to do with it.” Even if it was a folklore, it'd certainly be a nice folklore to believe in. She let her hair cover her face as she listened to his words. So, the first main reason that he kissed her was because he didn't want another to kiss her? And just because he wanted to? Did that mean she was just something for him to amuse himself with? That she was a toy that he could play around with? Sayuri's fingers curled around the hem of her dress at her feet until her knuckles went white. She felt as if her heart had been ripped out of her body and thrown in front of her to see as it was still beating. She was careful not to show her emotions on her face to him and made sure her voice was steady when she spoke again, and found it surprising that it was, "Then what am I to you? Just your charge?" Her voice, however, seemed to have an underlying hurt feeling underneath, try as she might to hide it. She got up and dusted herself, careful not to show him her face. She turned her back towards him and raised her arm to call for Eve, who seemed to have gone off for some hunting again. As Eve landed on her arm, Sayuri stroked Eve's feathers on her chest and the light breeze that Eve's wings brought her blew some of her hair out of her face. Why was she hurting so badly? Just by some of his words? Then she raised her arm and Eve flew off to somewhere and Sayuri crouched down, looking at the ground as if something interesting was there. As she crouched there, she appeared much smaller than usual as if she had curled herself up into a ball, but not quite. It wasn't as if she had withdrawn herself in like a turtle but more like a little girl who was poking at the ants on the ground with a stick and watching them crawl. Sayuri clenched at her chest, feeling her heart trying to hold itself together at his words. I'm being foolish, of course he doesn't feel... that way about me... she thought slowly as she realized that she really might be in love with him. But... why? Why was she in love with a man who was... who was such a jerk? But... the qualities that she had come to discover over time far outnumbered his bad qualities. Her fingers ran over a smooth pebble she found, her thumb rubbing over it as she let herself think for a bit. Slowly, she stood up and pulled out from the air water as it condensed into its liquid form. She began to concentrate her thoughts into the orb of water, as it began to show an eerie light form inside. It was blue, like the sun shining down on an ocean from underneath the surface. Sayuri was in love with... |

Something was off. He looked at her, gauging her reactions and attempting to read them. Part of the conscience he had been denying was whispering to him that no lady, with no slightest interest in him would let him get away with what he did during the festival of Inmoret. They would have been indignant, insulted and would most probably accuse him of assult. But the Mage did nothing of the sort. She had accepted it as if… as if she hadn’t minded at all. She asked him questions about what it head meant instead. Were women in Rania this submissive? It had been nearly two and a half decades, but his memory couldn’t have been wrong. They weren’t this submissive. He watched her deliberately divert her face from him and noticed the slight clenching of her hands. ”Then what am I to you? Just your charge?” It was not quite the reaction he had been expecting. Shura had thought she would have a late reaction in lashing out at him for his misconduct. The tone in her voice… it sounded hurt, not quite angry, as if he had harmed her. Her feelings were hurt, apparently. The realization made him stare dumbly at her. Shura didn’t deny that he liked her a lot. Too much for his own good. What he never expected was to have her reciprocate his affections. He was sure he was far from gentlemanly, he was always arguing with her, or he’d somehow always made her cry. He even insulted her! How could she even like him? The idea was bizarre. Bizarre… but then, it wasn’t impossible. Just unbelievable. Oh lord… what have I done? One way he could solve this problem was to push her away, but he couldn’t… wouldn’t hurt her. He was surprised hoe repulsed he was towards the idea. But if he didn’t… wouldn’t he be hurting her further? Damn it all. When she turned away and crouched on the ground, with her back facing him, something twisted in his chest. You stupid. You’ve already hurt her. Many times. He fought an impulse to claw at himself, running his hands over his face instead. “You’ve your body to blame,” he muttered irritably. “If it isn’t any more obvious, my Lady, I’d just shown you my interest towards you, which I should be ashamed to admit, but I am not. You are my charge… I should apologize for my misconduct, but I’m not sorry. What I can promise you… though, is I will ensure that it won’t happen again,” he said, not quite thinking. Oh hell who was he kidding? He still wanted her and he doubted it would ever change until she leaves. He would probably earn a slap for what he had just said to her. |

Sayuri turned sharply to face him. The first emotion was displayed as shock, then happiness, then something else at the end. Such a flurry of emotions that showed up on her face that she couldn't tell if she should be hurt further or cry. Just out right cry. Her legs told her to run, to run away from this man who was inflicting wounds on her she didn't know was possible. But her voice was steely hard, "So does that mean you only want me in your bed? Is that it? That I'm nothing more to you than just a woman who is attractive to you that you want me there?" She clenched her fists at her side. To say it like that hurt her more than she had expected. She couldn't... deny the feelings of wanting to be touched by him, to embrace him. But his words had inflicted... so many emotions out of her that she didn't know what she was feeling. Then slowly as she stared down at the ground, she whispered, "As long it had been you, it would have been fine, but if I'm just someone you think you can take to bed without consequences, then you're sorely mistaken." That was why she had asked about his kiss, to know what it meant on the night of the festival. To know that she meant to more to him than just his charge, than just someone he could take to bed with. To be at least a little bit "special" to him. She had already sat back down on her portion of their sleeping mat and had decided to sit as far as she could. It hurt and she wanted to cry. She wasn't special, who was she kidding and she was never going to be. Without waiting for his reply to her statement, she murmured without looking at him once since her sudden sharp turn that caused her to drop the water, "I'm going to sleep. Good night." It was rather monotone and hard, without any of the softness she usually had. It even lacked that musical quality that her voice had as she pulled the blankets up around herself. She curled up on the mat with her back facing him. |

He watched her expressions flash with a cold wind in his chest. This was the gaze of a woman with an injured heart. He had hurt her again. The little suspicion niggling inside his head was confirmed when she spoke. "So does that mean you only want me in your bed? Is that it? That I'm nothing more to you than just a woman who is attractive to you that you want me there?" It didn’t take a genius for him to get the hint that she actually wanted something more out of him. He could only stare at her, struck dumb by the reality of it all. He couldn’t understand how she could like him. His mind drew blank. The big question was all that filled his head. And what the hell was she accusing him of? Sure he wanted her there. He wasn’t going to deny that, but that didn’t mean he would do anything humiliating to her. He cared that was one bloody reason why he hadn’t ripped her clothes off yet. Shura would never stoop so low. He wouldn’t force a woman to succumb to him that way. Even if she had given him permission, he couldn’t possibly do that to her. He wasn’t human. He couldn’t destroy the life of another just for a moment’s pleasure. His mid reeled and he couldn’t pull up a proper response to her. His wide golden eyes never left her when she laid down and turned her back on him. The whisper of her words brought a blade through his chest. What the hell? That was the most… blatant confession of… what? Love? The single word brought a chill to his bones. He wasn’t afraid of falling in love. He was only afraid that it would be reciprocated. The rule of his game was to love and not be loved. This was not a game. Shura blinked when realization hit him. He hadn’t had the intention to play. It was… it was his own desires. “Why… in hell are you talking like that?” he breathed, torn and lost with what he had made. “You are a woman. Have some dignity for yourself. Why are you giving yourself up so easily?” To me? To someone who’ve not treated you properly? Then his voice turned dull, “If I had wanted you for the sake of your flesh, I would have. I haven’t.” No, no no no no no. He couldn’t turn soft now… not even when she was hurting. He cursed and fell back on his own mat, turning to face her back with a frustrated frown. Heaving a soft sigh, he wiped a hand down his face. Stupid. “I’ll be here if you need me… my Lady. Good night.” Edited by Seiss, Sep 25 2009, 06:07 AM.

“Why… in hell are you talking like that?” he breathed, torn and lost with what he had made. “You are a woman. Have some dignity for yourself. Why are you giving yourself up so easily?” Then his voice turned dull, “If I had wanted you for the sake of your flesh, I would have. I haven’t." She didn't answer his question but her heart stopped at his dull statement. Slight movement rippled the blankets as she pulled herself tighter into a ball. As if... to try and hold herself together. “I’ll be here if you need me… my Lady. Good night.” When she heard the evenness of his breathing that told her he was asleep, she let her tears run free. She buried her head underneath the blankets to let herself cry. He only cared for her enough because he held respect for her or maybe of some other reason that she might not be able to think of. But had that kiss on that night only been on a whim? She clenched at her shirt where her heart rested. It must have been... Otherwise, he wouldn't let her continue to suffer like this. Her heart tore and ravaged on itself as she tried to curl up tighter. It hurt... She eventually fell asleep, silently crying herself out. But when she did, all she saw were vivid images of that horrible memory that she found herself waking up in cold sweat. And when she tried, she was always afraid it'd be a nightmare. And her nightmares have been getting worse. Shortly before sunrise, Sayuri dreamed of that girl again. She only smiled at Sayuri, but it left her confused. Who was she? When it was time to get moving again, Sayuri discovered that she was still exhausted. Mentally and physically. She staggered as she got up from her mat, and seemed to wobble when she walked to her horse. When she mounted, she covered herself again with the cloak. "Ready when you are," she said softly. She was tired and wanted to sleep, but found that those images would not leave her alone. Eve could only watch over her... |

It took a while before he could fall into slumber. The warring of his conscience against what he had done wouldn’t leave him alone. He knew he should explain to her why he would distance himself from her, but Shura knew he mustn’t. Not yet at least. The right time to tell her was still far away. If he told her, he didn’t doubt that she would fall for him faster. Sayuri didn’t seem like the kind of girl who would have minded if he was disfigured or a demon. She had already seen what he was- seen him in his blind rage. It didn’t repel her. Just as he managed to fall asleep, he was roused again by soft sniffles and muffled sobs. His eyes opened, only to meet Sayuri’s back. She was covered completely in her blankets, curled in such a small ball. She was shaking. There was no hope for his sleep now, he thought glumly. There was a soreness in his chest that made him want to claw at it, or just… pull her to him. But he resisted, folding his arms to his chest and fisting his hands under the blankets. He watched her as her body calmed and sleep took over. He was staring at her back still when she shifted in her sleep. Her brows were creased and he could see the glimmer of tears when she turned. Eventually, when he could take no more, he hunched and squeezed his eyes shut, falling into a fitful sleep moments later. Shura woke much earlier than she did. His mood was foul from the lack of sleep and barely managed to content himself with glaring at the horses. They shifted in their places, cautious and frightened of him as if they could sense the violent energy that shrouded him. He packed his own belongings in a gloomy silence. When she woke, guilt and pity instantly stole their way into his heart. She appeared exhausted, tired of everything. Her movements weren’t steady. He had to stop himself from rushing over impulsively to make sure she doesn’t topple off a horse. He didn’t heed her words. Instead, he stared at her, contemplative. “We’ll rest for another day,” he said finally and settled before the burnt cluster of ashes. |

“We’ll rest for another day,” he said finally and settled before the burnt cluster of ashes. "No." Her voice was firm. "We mustn't delay ourselves any longer than we need to. We already did that when I had to recover those days where my legs were broken." And a soft smile touched upon her face as she looked at him. "And besides, I want to keep moving... I'll be fine." He probably knew she was lying. But she didn't care. Not anymore. Her heart already felt raw from the pain last night, and all she wanted to do now, was to quickly escape from the man who was inflicting so much pain on her that she had not expected to feel in so long. She still didn't want to admit that she loved him, but grudgingly, she came to realize she might hold something for him, but will not admit that it was anything similar to those feelings. After all, they're so fleeting and come just as quickly as it leaves. She was restless. She didn't want to stay around to rest for another day, she wanted to move on. She never wanted to stay around than they needed to, still remembering that day when all those assassins came. She had fallen so close to death that day and without herself realizing that she was. "Please, may we continue on?" she pleaded softly. Sayuri really didn't like the idea of a rest when she knew herself that even if they did, she wasn't going to rest well. Mainly because her nightmares. The other reason because of Shura. Eve said nothing and only watched. She gave up trying to talk to Shura and decided that she would only talk to him when he talks to her. Eve remembered the day before she left. The Oracle had come to her personally to tell her of a vision she had seen about the Mage. "Eve," the Oracle rasped. Her voice had always had that rustic and ancient sound to it. But with it, came the sound that Eve knew sounded of powerful and strong wisdom. "Yes?" Eve had perked, her eyes flashing towards the female's direction. "Another Prophecy has come to me." Eve only looked questioningly at the female. "In all, it's possible that she can live past her thirtieth winter, but the way to do so is..." "Is what?" Eve asked when the Oracle paused. "I am unable to say it. It is said that she herself must discover the way to break her chains to destiny." Eve felt infuriated. Then why bother tell her? This had been so pointless. Just as Eve was about to lift her wings for take off, the Oracle spoke again. "She will suffer in a way that questions her very being, and if that person is not there to save her, she will die before her thirtieth winter. Maybe sooner." "Who?" But Eve knew the answer. The Oracle can only say so much. Clicking her beak and with a slight bow, Eve took off. Now, Lady Sayuri is twenty. She's to turn twenty-one in the winter. And it is only fall. Nine years of life she has left as each day ticks by... |

He shrugged. Having already made up his mind, he reclined back against his arms and stared at the charred leftovers of their fire. “The passage through the tunnel will take a day and a half. I don’t think I’ve rested enough to go through it. It’s dark and we’d most likely get lost for a few times. I want to have enough energy to go through the tunnel without camping inside.” He had only glimpsed that false smile she gave him and ignored it. The earth was damp from the morning dew against his palms. He would have lain down if it were dry. Shura was still craving sleep. He barely had any. The Mage didn’t appear to be well rested either. How could she when she had been crying and waking up from nightmares? When she pleaded, he remained resolute and unmoved. “I’m sorry, my Lady,” he said quietly. “I’m still tired. I will not take you through the tunnel unless I can ensure you your safety.” Perhaps it was cruel of him to make her spend time doing nothing at all when she was obviously suffering emotionally. But moving on wouldn’t make a difference. Physical and mental exhaustion would bring more harm to the body. Shura shifted back and rested against a tree, his arms were folded across his chest and his eyes drifted close. |
