Willow's eyes went wide, Alden actually apologized. It took a moment to sink in, and she almost missed out on the rest of the conversation. She wasn't used to being caught off guard like that. His excuse was flimsy, she laughed to herself, but was probably true. "I didn't know you were in the creative arts Alden. What do you do? I just write, constantly. In fact I was concentrating on a story when you barrelled past me." She quirked her lips at the corners to let him know the remark wasn't meant to be hurtful. "I'm with you Roland, I couldn't draw a decent stick figure with a stencil. How did you get away with missing so many classes? I'd be terrified to skip one." She had been enjoying listening to their easy banter, and forgot about class. The buzzer went off, and a look of panic crossed her face. "Oh great! The first time I am ever late, and it has to be Mercer." Her stride increased, as her heart began to race. Then the irony caught up with her and she burst out laughing, but reined in her nervous giggles before entering the room. Edited by Oracle, Jan 23 2009, 01:36 AM.

((War Room Thread updated with important terms)) The woman in black in the center of the room looked up to see them enter the door. An intense smirk immediately grew darker as she took in the late students, "Three stragglers. Alden, I thought, had learned better... Willow- I suppose there is a first time... and who is this spiked stranger? Might he be the legendary Roland? The Boy Who Skipped? Well, you're an ignorant fool from all I've heard. And arrogant. Take your seats. I shall deal with your tardiness after class." Alden swallowed, his throat and lips suddenly dry, "Are you going to send us to Solitary?" Mercer chuckled coldly, "Mr. Roshan, if I had been going to merely Isolate you, then you would all three be on your ways. No. It appears I shall have to use stronger methods to teach you. Now, take your seats and plug in. There are three free here in front of me. Remember to stay awake this time." Alden immediately nodded and rushed down to one of the seats. Taking the laptop out with one hand, he plugged in his connector with the other. The connector plugged in to the right of the spine, near the base of the neck. This, while amplifying sound and allowing students to download needed information like media, monitored their body functions. Not only could teachers then realize the stimuli their lessons created, but they could also determine which students were sleeping without having to turn around or be close to the student- or even look up from their screen. Mercer, of course, was one of the oldest teachers and didn't fully trust the system and so kept a hawk's eye on her students during the entire 4 hour lecture. Many said she should retire- that it wasn't natural for her to remain on staff... but she stayed never the less. The students were allowed to pass "notes" via their laptops during the lessons, keeping in mind that one the laptops were connected, the teacher in charge could see every motion they made on it. As such, Alden was forced to ignore Willow's comment until a later time. At the end of the lecture, he stayed in his seat, palms sweaty and body tense to await Mercer's punishment. The doors slammed shut behind the last student and the four were left alone. Stepping down from the podium, Mercer made her way over, "You have a choice, children- you can spend time together in Lock Down, or serve in the Silent Room until dinner." |

As the class began Roland only smiled, it seemed he was already building up punishment time. As he set at the desk he decided to use the provided laptop instead of his own much smaller personal computer. Simply plugging in the laptop to the device at his neck he sank into the seat with a grin. The class seemed longer than usual, he was anxious to attend his punishment like a good little boy. Eventually the end of class did come around and in the motion of adjusting his shoe he sank his smaller computer into the free space within the shoe. It was tight but it would serve in case they made them suit up. It seemed that the dreadfully unpleasant woman teaching the class thought to give them a choice. He hadn't had the opportunity to speak to answer any of their questions earlier, and in the class he wasn't go to sending any message he couldn't encrypt on those ridiculous laptops. So maybe lockdown would give them a chance to speak if they could shake the gag restrictions. He'd only been punished once or twice, anymore than that and he wouldn't have been learning from his mistakes. However he didn't like the idea of being gagged, it would make him unhappy, he might not show for school again. " Lockdown then, I don't see any problem. I find it amusing that you're giving us the option though. I can't believe I'm getting punished the one time I show up to a class. Personally Mercer, I think you should be honored I decided to come to yours." He grinned then, Roland was a few steps away from hating this woman. It seemed very strange that someone should punish him for finally showing up. He'd spent the last few years running about the complex when no one was looking, hacking vent doors and actually getting to see the outside world. Recently he'd gotten bored learning from the internet and downloaded books and decided to come back. The fact that now his decision seemed rather rash and stupid didn't surprise him. |

I may get killed with my own gun, but he's gonna have to beat me to death with it, 'cause it's going to be empty." | |

So this is what it felt like. Willows hands and knees were shaking as she scurried to her seat. Her mind was running in circles, like a trapped animal. She glanced at Alden, he seemed terrified of the Solitary punishment, enough to voice it aloud anyway. If it scared him, it must be really awful, but if it was that bad, why did he continue to get into trouble? She was almost too distracted to concentrate on what Mercer was saying, her mind couldn't get around the fact that she, Willow, was in trouble. Absent mindedly she plugged into the computer port, but hardly any of the lesson registered through her tension. She could tell she as about to snap, and at this point she didn't care if Mercer saw the note she sent to Alden: What happens in solitary? I'm really scared. She glanced over to see if he would respond. Then the panic set in, and her mouth went dry. This just wasn't fair, it wasn't even her fault. What seemed like a lifetime later, Mercer was giving them a choice. For her it was blind, she had no idea what either of them were. Their rules weren't fair. Roland was right, why punish him for showing up? It was strange having a look at things from the other side of the fence, but she suddenly had a glimpse of their rebellious attitude, and a glimmer of understanding was all it took. Her jaw clenched, "I'll go with whatever you guys decide." Then her nerves took over again, but not enough to stop a splinter of anger from wedging itself between her and Mercer. Mercer raised an eyebrow and turned coolly before stopping, Ice Queen suddenly melted. She turned back around, her wrinkles all the more defined and her smoking days revealed by the centipede legs around her lips, "You think I should be honored, Roland? Do you still think you'll get into Elevated by default? Brains aren't all that matter, boy. If a person isn't loyal or dependable then all counts for nothing. That, children, is why there is a punishment for tardiness. Your fellows had all plugged in- were all ready... and you were waiting like buffoons in the door. Make your decision shortly or I shall make it for you." Alden shivered but whispered to Willow about the choices, adding so Roland could hear at the end, "Lock Down freaks me. At least the Silent Room allows you to think without other people staring you in the face like they can read your mind." Edited by Marian Frae, Jan 24 2009, 06:17 PM.

Roland only smiled at her, she was trying to shake him. He would be in elevated, if he didn't get in he wouldn't go to trade either, he would wander. None had ever done that before, he wasn't sure but he might actually prefer that life. That endless restless wandering genius, at least then he would have no obligations. Sarcasm dripped from his voice like venom when he spoke, and the smile on his face only grew disturbing. " Well it seems that perhaps I am not destined for the greatness that I so desperately desire. Whatever shall I do with myself. Oh yes I know, I will go to lockdown, let the others choose as they like. I made my choice earlier though, it seems that perhaps your hearing is failing you. I think perhaps it's the first sign of the age of retirement. Although looking at you it might not be the first." Looking towards the door he looked back to her, his smirk never faltered and he simply grew more irritated. This teacher was beneath him, the other students were better then she was. Yes he had an attitude problem, but breeding a race of children that all acted as identical people was nauseating, and they were getting very close to that. He doubted they would stop there, sometimes compliance wasn't the right action. " So are you going to have someone escort me, it seems the way to go doesn't it Mercer? You wouldn't want me to get lost and not come back to class again would you? Whatever would you punish me for if you couldn't do it for showing up?" |

Willow just sat there wide eyed as Roland turned the fire up under Mercer. If things weren't already bad enough, though everything he said was true. She was an old prune, but Willow would never have said it to her face. Did he fear nothing? It looked like it was up to her to decide their fate. "I'm sorry Alden, but I'm too afraid of solitary. I would rather go to Lockdown, I promise not to look at you though, okay?" She turned back to Mercer,"We may as well get on with it, but I must agree this punishment is unjust. And so long as it is going to happen either way, ditto for what Roland said." She was amazed, her head didn't fall off, or her eyes fall out. She was just the same for having spoken up. In fact she felt relieved to not have the anger bottled up anymore. As soon as Mercer turned away, she stuck her tongue out of her pursed face. |

Willow's decision felt like a blow in the balls. It didn't make sense... there was no connection, therefore there could be no betrayal... but that's how he felt. Odd that the one time he actually paid attention would be the one time he was gutter punched. Grimacing, Alden picked up his things and made his way to the now open doors- the gateway to a new-found, old friend called hell. The guards smirked at him knowingly, familiarly. It's not like he tried to get in trouble he just had an unfortunate habit of blindly walking into it... or shoving it down the stairs with a mad dash... but of course no one would believe that. She felt just awful. The first time in eleven years he called her by her real name, and she sided with the stranger. If only she wasn't such a fraidy cat. Nothing would be the same anymore. She felt as if she were about to be violated for nothing more than a simple infraction. Hardly worth mentioning. Maybe there was something she could do to make up for it. But she doubted it. The last thing he needed was her pestering him. Best to just keep quiet and slip back into her shell. At least she tried to, but as she approached the room with the other two, she had a panic attack. Palms sweaty, heart palpitating, her mouth was dry as cotton. She had never had reason for one before, and try as she might she could not stop the hyper-ventilating. A quizzical look crossed her face as it met the floor with a resounding crack. |

Alden froze at the thump of a head hitting the floor. Slowly, he turned around, one eye shut and the other almost there. Willow was lying on the ground, unconscious, "Oh..." he looked up at the guards in fury, "What'd you guys do to her? Shit, man!" He dropped to her side and began digging frantically through his bag, "I know they're in here somewhere... they've gotta-" he pulled out two small glass vials. Both were filled with a clear liquid. Next came a small tray- almost like a Petri dish. A drop from each vial went into the dish and then under Willow's nose. |
