Hunting weekend. We all piled into Emmet's jeep, which tended to be the vehicle of choice when we got ready for one of those trips further out. It was simply the best suited vehicle for where we were going. Practical, inconspicuous. It was Rosalie, Carlisle, Alice, myself and Noelle this time. An unusual group in a way, since the couples usually opted to hunt together - unless we 'boys' at some time decided to head out together, which also happened frequently enough. Emmet and Edward had taken such a trip only a few days ago, so they didn't need to go this soon, and Esme had decided to first finish one of her little projects.

Rosalie, our car enthusiast, was driving, with Carlisle riding shotgun and the rest of us in the back. It wouldn't be a very long trip, as we were just doing a quick 'hop' North to Canada this time, not crossing half the country to get to the hunting grounds. The distance would almost have been easier to cross on food, but in keeping with our human habits we'd take the car as far as possible before giving in to the vampire insincts. Since Emmed wasn't here I wouldn't be caught up in a game with him, but knew I would still enjoy the whole thing. This was one of the few occasions when I truly let loose.

"So Noelle, what's your favorite food?" I asked.

My favorite food? Pizza. Oh. They meant post-transformation. I actually couldn't remember that well what pizza tasted like, come to think of it. Just that I'd really liked it.

This was a delicate question. I didn't like anything as a vamp. Not really. I killed and ate because if I didn't, I'd endanger humans. But that was a downer answer, and I could tell everyone was excited. I shrugged and decided, just this once, to cooperate and get excited too.

"Well, I know in Alaska, we went after bear a lot, because there are a lot of them up there. They usually tasted fishy, though, except in berry season. I have to admit, they tasted pretty darn good then." I grinned back at Jasper. "Ususlly, though, I like deer. They pretty much taste the same all the time, so it's like, er, the McD's Big Mac of my diet. Without the pickles. But in berry season, oh it's bear, for sure."

I looked at my hunt-mates and asked everyone what they liked best.

"Deer?" I looked at Noelle like she was from Mars or something. We all had our different tastes, but the one thing in common was that each and everyone I knew preferred carnivores to herbivores. The taste was just a lot more wholesome, more satisfying, and I thought their blood even lastes longer until a new hunt was necessary. All in all, carnivores were just a lot closer to humans.

For me, deer were about as far down my favorites list as it got - unfortunatley I had to make do with those way too often. They were plentiful and available close to home - perfect for my still often enough necessary snack in between. McD's might be the right comparison there. "I prefer jaguar." I said and after a moment added with a rueful smile. "We won't find any of those, though. They are way too rare to hunt. Anything feline is really good, though."

Jaguar sounded so exotic! The only places I'd ever hunted had been Alaska, a little bit of British Columbia, and here. I guess the Cullens and Hales had hunted all over the world.

"Feline, like cats?" I had to think about that. Cats were like housecats, only bigger, even if they were predators. I had a nasty feeling I wasn't going to be much fun on this trip.

"Well, I kindof like deer because they don't taste the least bit human, I guess. Yeah, I have to hunt a little more often maybe, but I do that to be safe anyway. I guess I just eat because I have to, but don't want anything that makes me think people?"

My mood kindof flattened out a bit with that, because I saw excitement in the eyes of my huntmates, and here I was disappointint them again. So I kindof hoped there was a bear out there. There were still late berries around, so we could get lucky, maybe.

The rearview mirror gave me a view of Noelle's face, if she didn't lean to one side, so I didn't have to turn my head to see whether her mood was falling the way it sounded. Yes, she seemed a bit depressed, which by now I realized was a frequent problem for her. She had not been staying with us for long, so this was the first time she'd agreed to come along on a family hunting trip. Ever since the incident at the senior class retreat, that blowup between her and Edward, he and I especially had been paying closer attention to Noelle's feelings and moods, but she wasn't making it easy so far.

"Noelle!" I said with an amused but fond grin, turning just enough in my seat to be able to look back and meet her eyes. "The whole idea is to not think "people," silly girl. Aside from the taste, the reason we all have developed a preference for carnivores is because they are more satisfying so we don't need as many. But if you like deer, all the better. They are everywhere." Wanting to keep Noelle engaged, I thought for a moment before starting to just chat.

"Deer were all I lived off of for months after I was changed. Maybe that's why I still like them, though I do prefer carnivores. Any carnivore - no real favorite. Emmett's favorite is grizzly bear, so if we find them today we'd better not tell him. Unless he's been annoying Esme, or if you want an instant wrestling match." I grinned cheerfully at that vision.

The conversation had taken quite a turn. I didn't know exactly what to think of Noelle just yet, so I stayed quiet when she asked her question. I kept peering in the rearview mirror at our guest, my curiosity getting the better of me. Looking back out at the road, I pressed down on the gas a little harder, all the talk of preferred game starting to make me impatient.

Normally, I would have complained that running was much faster than driving, but I was behind the wheel so I didn't mind as much. "How far do we wanna take the Jeep?" I asked Carlisle, interupting the current discussion. It was the first time I'd spoken since we'd all left the house, but I still had a slightly bitter edge in my tone. That was natural, though.

I was sitting in the back of the jeep just listening to the conversation. Carlisle was trying his best to get Noelle to talk. I smiled slightly to myself. I looked at Rose as she spoke to Carlisle. I smiled at her trying to get her to react since Noelle had arrived Rose had not Interacted with her much. Unusually I wasn't sitting with Carlisle but I was happy just being surrounded by my family. Emmett had stayed at home and so had Edward. I was going to stay with them but I felt like I wanted to go. Even if my motive was just to be with my family.

After all I’d spent most of the last week on the sofa with my sketch pad. yes I’d redesigned mine and Carlisle’s room and Painted the living room and right now I was working on Decorating a room for Noelle . My attentions were also on Edward and his lack of Interest in Woman. He was my son and I wanted him to happy. But to me it felt wrong I was so happy with Carlisle that I felt it was my duty as a mother to help Edward.

I pulled myself out of my thoughts and back to the conversation at hand.

"And who will have to do the wrestling?" I asked, laughing at Carlisle's comment. He was right of course. If we happened to run across grizzly today without Emmet near and he found out we'd never hear the end of it - not until the next hunting trip when we was as lucky in any case.

And if our dear brother chose someone to fight with to let out his temper it would be me. I was plainly the only one who presented a continous challenge to him. Edward could wiggle out of his grasp during those rare times when Emmet actually thought before acting, which wasn't all that often, but Emmet just had a way to bulldoze through everything. I did not need tricks to beat him, just experience and speed, and I did not think a lot when wrestling either.

"Don't worry, Noelle, you'll be safe."

I was beginning to enjoy all this talk of Emmet being dangerous. He was a big teddy bear! Well, maybe not to a nasty PE or something, but I knew I was in no danger from him. He had been the only one to just accept me without seeming to put conditions on it.

"If he wants a fight over a berry bear, he's on," I said with the quietest confidence. In Alaska, you learn to fight dirty or you get squished. I hadn't gotten squished. Once people got over my tiny size, and how dirty I could fight, they left me alone. Of course, I had never been tested in actual battle. A little practice fighting, up in Denali, but not really anything serious.

That made me curious. "Do you guys, er, ever hold practice fighting drills or anything like that between you and the werewolves? It's probably a really silly question. But, like, if you ever had to actually fight one of the wolves, um, how would you know you could win if you don't spar? I mean, I was thinking the wolves and you guys must do that, so next time you do, could I learn how to fight woofies? I already know how to fight bears." I hid about 80% of a grin. "I bet I could even beat Emmet at bear hunting, if it came right down to it. Unless it's a fishy bear. He can have those."

I had been grinning wide, and probably about to burst into laughter at the very idea of anyone beating Emmet at bear hunting, but that mirth disappeared almost instantly at the thought of fighting drills. No, those did not happen. What for, anyway. We were at peace with the pack, even though that treaty was uneasy on both sides. We avoided each other, and that was best.

The only thing that sparring could accomplish was that either of us learned about the strength and weaknesses of the other, with no advantage gained by either side. The excercise might just give them ideas. I had seen some of the pack's effectiveness and would observe what I could, but I would not give them a demonstration of our battle prowess. Besides, this was not something you did for fun. When there was no need to I didn't want anyone of the family near that kind of thing - myself included.

I did not say anything, though, only made sure I did not 'leak' any of those feeling. The last thing I wasnted was to put a damper on what should be a fun family hunting trip.
