Ch. 1 Harvest Moon Mystery {WiP} The one major downside to being Animagi was the fact that they couldn't talk. Of course, this thought didn't occur to Sirius Black until he was already running through the short cut grass that comprised the Hogwarts grounds. His nails tore through the loam as he tried to keep up, a larger shadow passing him - James. Thank god. Remus - no, Moony always seemed afraid of the splay of horns atop the head of James' Animagus form. Remus was also strangely insistent on his nickname not being used in the few days prior to the full moon and Sirius had never thought to ask why. Well, it was too late now. It was also too late, as the illegal Animagi scrambled to catch their friend, to ask Remus if this was one of the worries he'd had about them joining him tonight. All week, he'd tried to talk them out of it until Sirius finally pointed out he was being a git and Remus gave in. You had to insult him to get him to cave. It hurt, doing that. Remus had a hard enough life as it was, but sometimes he was just too bloody proud. A yelp escaped Padfoot's throat as he instinctively shook his hind leg, feeling the flesh tear. A small furry creature went flying - Peter. Bloody hell. Something else to apologize for in the morning. Before Sirius could turn to look for the small rat, he found himself enclosed in the cage of antlers. Yes, this inability to communicate was clearly a problem. Peter could've just nudged Sirius from his stupor had they been human. James could've hexed Sirius if he liked. Anything was better than seeing those hazel eyes holding a look of anger no deer ought to have. The stag's head moved, freeing Sirius and prompting the black dog to pay a little more attention to his surroundings. Following behind the stag, growling and wary, limped the werewolf. The animal looked exhausted, already bleeding from places it had attacked itself. Its long nose was almost touching the ground. Sirius waited, ignoring for the moment the sound of scurrying rodent feet around his paws. When the werewolf was a few feet from the stag, Sirius let a growl slide from between his teeth. It was a warning. He had to know whether Remus was in control before letting him get any closer to James. The lanky were paused, narrow head slowly rising, scraggly ears pricking up. Meeting the black dog's gaze, the wolf deliberately nodded before opening its maw and letting its tongue loll out one side. Sirius relaxed and padded over, licking at a few of the wounds. Remus was in control, tensing at the licking as James turned away, keeping watch. Sirius whined in sympathy and apology; the huff escaping the werewolf could only be a "get on with it" as the injured animal lay down in the grass. Not for the first time, Sirius wished for a wand and a hand to manipulate it with, but that would be too much risk. If he even suggested it, Remus would have an aneurysm. Until morning came, until the moon waned, this was the best they could do. Putting one paw out to hold Remus down, Sirius settled in for another session of first aid. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* The waters of the Black Lake flew in silver moon drenched spangles as three pairs of legs ran together, a small brown rat with claws splayed nestled safely in the black dog's fur like a patch of rust. Peter seemed tense - worrying too much. Just like Remus. Come to think of it, James had been awfully quiet this evening too. Sure, he had joined in the fun, but he seemed to be more watchful, hanging back more often, protecting them. Sirius was getting a little tired of it, but he couldn't come right out and ask James what was going on. Oh, vocal chords! So missed! Sirius looked to his left, a quick check in on Remus. No matter how they were acting, nobody could deny that this was a good full moon. Remus was showing his teeth in a grin, long limbs stretching to pull him into a sprint along the lake's edge until he finally dove. There was nothing quite as amusing as watching a werewolf swim. Sirius barked and wagged his tail before wading in after Remus. Small claws tugged at his fur, Peter moving towards his head so that he could stay dry. Several feet away, lagging behind again, James waded into deeper water as well. Before he was in much farther than his chest, the stag stopped and turned towards the castle. In the white moonlight, James in his Animagus form made for an impressive spectacle. His antlers spread out to either side, as if he was trying to pierce the perfectly round moon and make it deflate. The fact that even Moony thought twice before tangling with Prongs said a lot. Still, it fit. James was their leader, the one who was in charge. Of course, Sirius would've felt a lot better if he'd known what the bloody hell his best friend was playing at. A snapping twig distracted him and had him swimming in earnest for the shore. He threw a warning bark over his shoulder, eyes never leaving the spot where Remus had disappeared through the trees. He didn't usually swim that fast, lingering in the lake for hours at a time. Sirius huffed as he tried to get a better paw-hold on the slippery bank and Peter scrabbled at the wet fur of the dog's neck. James ran past, heading full tilt for the trees. He looked ready for anything. For once, Sirius hung back and waited. He wanted to know what was going on. Grass bent easily beneath the dog's paws as he paced at the edge of the trees. Peter's scurrying was easy enough to translate: he was worried and thought they needed to go in there after their friends. Sirius shook his head and finally sat on his haunches, ears pricked. There were no sounds of fighting, no whines or sounds of pain. The forest was completely silent. For once, Sirius was going to wait them out. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* |
